Alot more people would develop better typing technique & hand positioning that way. ;)
Yessir!

Someone's getting a unibody.. ;)

Oh ha! I looked at it differently though. I was thinking about the OP getting a melted squashed together MacBook, making it a unibody.

As another poster said, I don't want to be mean, but I doubt they'll give you a replacement. Probably will fix it, and then fan.
Then, if it happens two more times- you got a real unibody!:)

Well, I seriously think Apple should replace the laptop or keyboard, warranty or not.

Come on, have anybody else seen another melted laptop brand. Or did it mention anywhere in the manual not to leave it running or kept in a laptop bag on? Many people do it with their regular laptops.

So another 11th hour question...do I reformat my hard drive tonight? Everything important is backed up... Also what about my upgrades? 200gb 7200rpm hd, 4gb ram...

i am just one of the people who makes sure the laptop sleeps. Trust me, my air gets hot enough with the lid open i cant imagine it with a closed lid

Attached is a photo of the section of the computer this would effect

You should remove them and put back the ones you got with your computer, if you still have it. If not, call Apple and try to speak to someone who can help you and be sure your ram and hard drive are transfered.

Anyone who has dealt with Applecare knows the first rule Apple tells you is backup your stuff. There is no second rule about removing your stuff, so that is up to you. I'd imagine you need to take a screwdriver with you incase they say "no can do", but you'll need to have replacement parts on hand as I doubt they'll swap them with the new parts.

I'm sorry it happened man. Last semester as I was finishing a class while under XP, I just closed the lid, and took my mbp in my backpack. It takes me like 10 minutes to get to the parking lot, and another 10 to get home. When I got home I grabbed the laptop and the whole thing was just burning, extremely hot, could not touch it for more than a few seconds, the fans were going full speed. Apparently the computer did NOT go to sleep when I closed the lid (remember, using XP).

The good thing was that the fans were at full speed, otherwise I'm sure it would have melted something. I immediately shut it down and waited for it to cool off. Now I always make sure it goes to sleep after I close the lid, no matter if I'm under OSX or XP, but especially under XP.

...I'm heading in to the apple store right now...i'll let you know how it goes, maybe i'll even update from the apple store.

So they are sending it in...7 days they said

I told them what happened, and i really hope they just replace it (it'd be nice if it was a unibody but i understand that realistically it should be the same early 08 MBP, with the same hardware).

When they looked at it they kept talking like it was a cosmetic keyboard issue...because they took the melted keys off and the rubber underneath wasnt melted...also no plastic was melted in the card slot and the screen wasnt affected. The geniuses said the heat almost seemed to come from above...not below....which makes no sense at all. Because the lid was closed, there is no way i had anything hot just on the keyboard....and like i said the LCD was fine.

The other issue i had mentioned to them (which i dont remember mentioning here) was that if i pushed slightly on the surface above where the magsafe plugs in...my laptop would shut off. It happened more than once but of course i couldnt recreate the problem at the apple store.

I'm slightly concerned because they made it seem like i did something wrong....did I?

Like stated in the original post, all i did was close the lid and set it aside for about 40 mins....the MBP should have slept (which they said "well if OSX has a notification it can wake up"...i only had Mail and Word open)...and with laptops being around for way more than 10 years...you'd think this wouldnt be a problem. It felt like they assumed i was lying to them and that i had set a heater on my open keyboard.

Hopefully there is some glaring issue when they open it up.

I'll definitely keep you guys notified.

Someone might know this for sure, but I think that when the computer is sleeping no program can wake it up. I know I've had my MBP in sleep mode for hours at a time, and after I wake it up, Mail checks and I have new messages, but these do not appear (Mail doesn't even check if there are new messages) until it wakes up. I don't know what kind of notifications the apple store guy was talking about. As far as I know this is true for all laptops and desktops, apple or not. Someone please enlighten us.

I don't think they were purposely trying to make you feel bad, they were probably just talking about the problem as if you weren't there, which in my experience most employees do from time to time. As long as you're polite you're ok. Remember, some people get dizzy when they are on top of a brick.

were you using any usb devices at the time? Cause when you unplug any USB device it causes the computer to wake, however it should go back to sleep if it detects the lid is closed.

no i wasnt. the only thing plugged in was the magsafe.

Based on the genius's findings, they are probably just going to replace the keyboard since nothing was melted from underneath. If they test it and find that the logic board was faulty and was the cause they could just replace the keyboard and logic board.

As long as that hard drive replacement is Apple sanctioned, you should be fine. Any replacement of a hard drive in a Macbook Pro (last generation) not done by an Apple Authorized Service Provider is considered putting the unit out of warranty.

Welcome to Applecare. The "genius" section of the returns area in the store consists of simple retail workers that are anything but. It was serving coffee at Starbucks, or returning Apple products at the retail store..... whichever job called back first. When Applecare tech gets ahold of it and gets it apart they SHOULD be able to see the cause. It'll be a very hot spot on the motherboard and components will appear blue or darker in color (discolored basically) that caused the issue. Apple only trains the retail employee's enough to know deceptive practices so they are literally trained to scrutinize you, beyond that their technical ability is..... oh quite limited.

I think they have to replace your MBP as you didn't do anything to melt the keys. If it was internal, it's not your fault (unless you took it apart and messed with the internal parts, which it doesn't sound like you did-this could also include upgrading the RAM or HD, but that's a stretch). If they give you a unibody though, that would be sick :p

Applecare's requirements for replacement in the form of an upgrade are if they do not have the parts needed to repair the issue within a "Reasonable" timeframe which I believe they set at 10 to 14 days (don't remember the exact number), or if Applecare calls apple and says they do not have the parts needed for repair and Apple cannot locate a refurbished model to replace it with after attempting to locate the parts. This is mostly done with motherboard issues in the processor. If your fan or temp sensor failed, they would have such a part available quite easily, then slap a new keyboard on it.
