Welcome to Applecare. The "genius" section of the returns area in the store consists of simple retail workers that are anything but. It was serving coffee at Starbucks, or returning Apple products at the retail store..... whichever job called back first. When Applecare tech gets ahold of it and gets it apart they SHOULD be able to see the cause. It'll be a very hot spot on the motherboard and components will appear blue or darker in color (discolored basically) that caused the issue. Apple only trains the retail employee's enough to know deceptive practices so they are literally trained to scrutinize you, beyond that their technical ability is..... oh quite limited.

Not really. This may be the case for some Apple retail stores, but a lot of geniuses really are good computer technicians and enjoy helping people and cutting them a break when able to.

This gives me some hope and brightened up my evening...

I have never tampered inside, apple did the HD upgrade, and the ram was high quality. So I look forward to hearing back from from apple.

...and to answer your question....yes, everone in Africa is black ;)

Please keep us updated. I really wanna know what they say. My say is that you'll be able to enjoy the unibody ;)
 
After my first bout of repairs and eventually replacement, I bought a 12" powerbook as a backup.
Needed it again just a few months ago as I had to return my 2.4 for another onslaught of repairs. Eventually was replaced with a unibody after 2 unsuccessful repairs.
 
As long as that hard drive replacement is Apple sanctioned, you should be fine. Any replacement of a hard drive in a Macbook Pro (last generation) not done by an Apple Authorized Service Provider is considered putting the unit out of warranty.

Ugh, no it doesn't. If you break something while doing the change, then yes.
 
so i guess they are just repairing it.... does that sound right?

all i want is a working MBP...how will i know if its fixed???? if doesn't melt again?

Maybe they just replaced it with a new mbp, I wouldnt be surprised if you open the return box to find a brand spankin new unibody mbp!
 
yeah, but you knwo what i think tehy will open it, lok at it and be like hmm dunno what it was, could have been this.. replace teh whole part and replace teh keyboard

Like I said before (and I hate to be party popper) Apple is not a charitable foundation. Right now, it costs more to give you a new Unibody than to repair your current MBP. If they opened it and found only cosmetic damages to the keyboard, that's all you are getting repaired. If they did find something else, they will fix it also. You will get a replacement more likely if your laptop really fails or you have exhausted every form of fixing by Apple.

Think of all the CA$H they could make selling his good parts to people out of warranty paying premiums for repairs ;)
They would charge ~$700-800 for the motherboard alone, plus labor. The display, optical drive, RAM, I/O boards are all still useable as repair parts. They wouldn't lose money either way, and might even make money selling his parts for other repairs.
 
Been watching this thread for a few days. OP update us.

Here's the update, because of the holiday week/weekend I won't get the laptop until today. I'm probably going to go to the apple store at lunch to pick it up. We'll see what was replaced, and I'll let you know how it all goes.

We should know the outcome by the end of the day.

I'd be interested if Apple came back and said the damage wasn't caused by heat within the laptop. The lining under the keyboard doesn't look damaged - wouldn't you think that would be melted too, if the source of the heat came from within the laptop?

Call me skeptical...

The lining under the powerbooks was painted metal if I'm not mistaken. I didn't know it changed in the transition to intel? Edit: There are reflecting layers for keyboard lights.
Also, different plastics have different melting points. The ones closer to heat would be more resistant to melting by design. The keyboard isn't supposed to withstand high temps on a regular basis.

if it was hot enough to melt the keyboard, then maybe it was hot enough to change the color of the paint
 
A happy ending...but not a Unibody ending.

Everything was covered under apple care...they didn't even wipe my HD.

Man that was probably the worst issue i've ever seen with a macbook pro!

I would have thought they just replaced the whole darn thing though!

The list of parts they had to replace is ludacris!!
I thought it was funny that the MLB had a funny smell/burnt ahahhaha


Glad that it all came back, and is in working condition.All data saved too!
