Come on now, you can't be serious.

You would rather do without a new modern design, w/ improved graphics, speed, battery life, etc, just because you don't want to spend a few bucks on a piece of film which essentially provides the matte effect that you desire in your screen.

You buy accessories all the time to achieve different levels of customization on the standard $2,000.00 model. Things like; software, bags, cases, adapters, pads, blue tooth mice & keyboards, drives, headphones, speaker systems. microphones, remote, etc. etc. The list is almost endless. But a piece of matte film is out of the question.

Is it matte film or antiglare film? The two are not the same. I share the sentiment expressed by Motulist.

Long live matte!

matte vs. glossy is a preference like chocolate vs. vanilla. Neither is inherently better, but many people have a VERY strong preference for one over the other. I'd eat no-name store brand chocolate ice cream before I'd eat even haagen daz brand vanilla. I personally cannot stand glossy in any environment other than a completely dark room. Some people have little preference in screen type, but many people strongly prefer one over the other.

Apple definitely should offer consumers an option of matte or glossy. I will not buy a laptop that has a glossy screen. I know that someone here mentioned that you can get an anti-glare coating to put over your screen, but the pictures I've seen of them have not made them look like they do a good enough job that I'd be happy with. Notice that they call it an anti-glare filter film, not a matte film. In fact even in their own product promo picture on that page you can see insane amounts of reflections coming of of it!

antiglare film?

Anti-glare film.

Still makes the display matte and blocks off glare. I have it on my MacBook and I do not regret it.

I really hope they don't do the split trackpad. The single button trackpad is one of the things I first loved about my MacBook. Tap right-click is a million times more useful than a button taking up space anyway.

What are you talking about? we need a right click for the sake of windows users, we dont wanna confuse them :D

jokes aside, I'm still amazed that they consider this a negative feature of Macs!

Ever since I got my hands on a macbook air... my 15" SR MBP just doesn't feel as sexy. I'm sure apple will move roughly in the direction of a bulkier MBA design... rounded edges wouldn't surprise me at all.

I hope it's like the Mighty Mouse in that it has a single button which left-clicks when clicked on the left half (or anywhere, if it's set that way) and right-clicks when clicked on the right half.

If it is like the MM then it won't know if you are right or left clicking and just screw everything up.

OR

You will have to not touch any part of the notebook while right clicking. :D

Again, I'd love to see a discrete graphics card on the MB...

But again, I'm (almost) sure Apple won't provide big surprises until 2009...

PowerBooks vs Intel Mac Pros

Hmmm. I'm on the verge of buying a MacBook Pro to replace my increasingly decrepit PowerBook G4, but some of the details that have been emerging over the last few months are disturbing me a bit.

Black "flat top" keyboard? Ech. Split trackpad with two buttons? Hell no.

And as for some of the earlier rumours, no FireWire 400, full-size DVI or internal optical drive? Combine that with the current incarnations of MacBooks that don't have the numberpad under the 789/uio/jkl/m keys which is something that is likely to continue with this new model.

My old PowerBook running Tiger is starting to look more and more attractive compared to one of these 'new' MacBook Pros with Leopard under the hood.

Many of the additions that are mentioned here could be nice to see. The items that have been rumored to be removed can be deal killers for many. I know that I am very happy with my 17" 1.67 GHz PowerBook. I only miss having an Intel processor when I have to run my Windows only efile programs. I'm happy with my PowerBook running either 10.4.11 or 10.5.5. The non eaisily replaceable hard drive is the main thing that I dislike about my PowerBook. But that problem has not been fixed in any of the Intel MacBook Pros. Not even in the rumorss. The Intel MacBook wins in that category. But no card slot, FW800 or full DL-DVI connector, so no go there.

hdmi

I actually really like the tapered look..and if apple is trying to unify their compies the tapered is the way to go...and the bigger trackpad, and all aluminum...and i honestly would not mind seeing the optical drive and some ports go if this brick thing is real..which sounds effing sweet btw...and i dont think that the hdmi port in the MBP is that farfetched either...hdmi now...and new ACD at macworld along with snowleopard

Is hdmi capable of resolutions greater than 1920 x 1200? The current 30" display requires a DL-DVI connection for its 335 increase in pixels to 2560 x 1600. That interface is supposed to be able to handle 3840 x 2400. Not a bad resolution for a new Apple Super Cinema display in the 42" size range or so.

Rumors are interesting, even if we know that most of what is shown won't really come to be. It's nice to see if other people are wanting what you want to make up that rumor or if maybe Apple thinks the way we do on certain products & useful to us features. The features I would like to see seem to be less & less likely to come to market on a Mac or iPod. Since I have old I can stay there & wait for Apple to slip up & make a product with features that I'd like to see.

I had a set thing about a new PowerMac which turned into an Intel Mac Pro was that it must be at least 3 GHz in cpu speed. I've owned my 3 GHz Intel PowerMac for 25 months now. So Apple can get the minimum at least once in a while.

The One I Would Have no Compaints With

IMHO, this is the one I would go for. If Apple released it like it is here, I'd be the happiest man alive. All of the features I want, I love the way it looks, chicklet keyboard has been something I've wanted for a long time too, so... it's the perfect match!

I really hope this is what they come out with, but either way I'm sure it will be great!

WOW... $5.00 off?!!!! THATS AMAZING!...

maybe I'll buy two for that price... oh... wait... only 1 per household...

I didn't say anything about the price.

I'm talking about how it says "1 per household" between the dates of 9/26 and 9/30. Why are there dates? Could they be hinting at something?

I guess I'm just looking for excuses for the new MacBooks to come out already. The sooner the 30th comes the sooner I'll have a better idea of how much longer I'll have to wait. I don't mind the 14th of October but the sooner the better.

Laptops or Desktops?

Am I the only one that finds the prospect of new MacBooks kinda boring? :p

If a new form factor is announced at the same event I could maybe get excited, but laptops? They just seem kind of passé to me.

I have a desktop at work and one at home for serious computing. I also have a nice laptop, but for the most part it just sits on a shelf unused since the multi-touch stuff came out. It's already come to the point for me where it's more of a hassle to start up the clunky laptop and carry it around with you than what you get in return.

It doesn't sync with my desktops, so nine times out of ten if I am writing a document, I have to start up the laptop, transfer the file, lug the thing to the coffee shop, work on the file, lug the laptop back, transfer the file back to the desktop ....

I mean I know there are syncing solutions and MobileMe etc. so I am exaggerating a bit, but it almost seems as if the only reason to have a laptop any more is if it is your one and only computer. As a portable, it kind of fails. Unless you think of it as a portable desktop.

I sure hope Apple comes out with something else besides mildly re-styled laptops or I might go to sleep half way through the presentation.

No matter what we say or think the laptop seems to be where the major sales increase for Apple & many others now. With Apple's current form over function actions, the laptop fits in there. Even as small as they are now many believe that laptops must be smaller. I'd like function to come first, then form to follow.

This laptop sales increase is because many people need to have their computer with them no matter where they are. Many people do not have the convenience of only needing to use a computer in the office, then waiting until they are home for any computer use.

In this day & age more people are becoming self-employed. Many do their work at remote locations. I know that I got rid of my employer 20 years ago. I used to go to several hundred client's locations each year. I can remeber carrying my Mac 128/512, Plus, SE, SE/30, IIci & finally PowerMac 9500/9600 Clones. Once I got past the SE/30 I went to a small LCD screen. Weights started out small & got as high as 50 lbs. By time I purchased my first PowerBook my business was the same, but the location has almost completely changed to working out of my home office. I still use my PowerBook for a coupe of dozen out of office tax season clients. During the rest of the year it is needed to allow me to go to many new bookkeeping clients. This allows me to make presentations & do work at their location. Remember that most of them are using Windows computers.

My son is a photographer who needs to have a laptop when on location & a very powerful desktop when back at the office.

Many of the laptop sales are for people that need their computer on the road so to speak. Maybe things will change for you in the future. With so many businesses outsourcing their work not many computer related jobs need to be done in a local office. There goes the office desktop. then if you have work that requires you to personally service your customers, you may find out why many of these laptops are purchased.

Remove the old.

All MBP models have had some sort of multi-touch (scrolling, right-click etc). I said the same thing when they came out with the newer "multi-touch" models but they didn't release any support for my original MBP.

These things happen, especially with Apple. They tend to like to drop support for anything less than current-generation.

Yea like the floppy when it was still useful, the internal modem for those that still need to send faxes or live in areas where only dial-up is available. like when I go to a client's business or home that doesn't already have internet service. No everyone has the internet. A small dialup internet conection will handle those needs. Sometimes a neighbor's unprotected wireless service does the job.

I'd be tempted to look at the refurbs or last gen models. Not what I want, but it may be necessary. At least it would cost less.

I would do the same. Furthermore, those anti-glare films that have been "promoted here" don't look absolutely matte, at least this is what I see on the web-site, but really reflective. Looks like we are going back to early 90's when I bought one of those horrible anti-glare panels to put on my CRT monitor.Matte displays provide more accurate color reproduction and don't annoy you with reflections. Of course I can see the point of those that like the exaggerated, unrealistic, consumer, pc discount ware, colors on the glossy and are willing to "accomodate their eyes", "get used", "tilt the screen slightly" to properly use the screen. I just want an option (as it is actually), as would a lot of people. LONG LIVE MATTE !

Why all this no-matte talk? Does anyone have any proof Apple is dropping the option? I don't see how they can when so many of their loyal customers prefer one or the other...and alot REALLY don't want all-glossy.

This sounds too much like a fastfood restaurant mentality for Apple to actually do it...although they did do it to the iMac I just can't see them imposing this upon the professional users. I think it would definitely create animosity and a possible backlash to be honest.

I don't buy into 'just buy an anti-glare film' "accessory" solution either. I don't want to be putting a visual condom over my $2500 "desktop replacement" screen.

... I'd be really disappointed if there wasn't a matte option...

New MacBoom pictures on Apple "Get a Mac" site?

Is it me or is it the new MacBook displayed on the page "Why you'll love a Mac" on the Apple site?

http://www.apple.com/getamac/whymac/

Click the picture next to "...and beauty". I don't recall any previous MacBooks to have an aluminum case with black keys.

Am I wrong here?
