But not if you're working in Photoshop.

Or if there is the smallest hint of light anywhere near, yes they are brilliant if you live in total darkness but I don't so ....

I had a macbook for a while but that glossy screen was a nightmare, outside inside ..totally unusable (whatever the angle , Apple bot trolls!)

there is going to be something on sept 30 with apple tvs and maybe they will throw in the macs

you sound mighty confident about this ,.....why so ?

Another matte display adherent here... I would be extremely disappointed if Apple's next round of updates were to include only glossy screens. I find them extremely annoying--so much so that if they were to go that route I'd probably end up buying something else, even though I've never owned anything but Apples in my entire life (and even though that would mean having to buy all new software as well!). That's the only dealbreaker for me, I think. They could do just about anything else they want and I'd be fine with it, but I need my matte display, dang it!! :(

Did I miss the tech improvements?

I see lots of discussion of essentially cosmetic changes, but what technological improvements are expected in the next MBPro? When will it have Blu-ray?

But not if you're working in Photoshop.

Correct. I work with photoshop all day preparing images to be printed on a Fuji Frontier system. I have a 1st gen 17inch intel iMac (matte), a 20inch ACD and a MacBook. Both the iMac and the ACD are correctly calibrated using a Spyder and, with the Frontier profiles (suplied by the lab), the results are absolutely great. The MacBook is a totaly different story. I can't calibrate it (tried many times using exactly the same procedures as with the iMac and ACD), and it simply won't work. Tried in total darkness, same results. I'm not even talking about the glare or reflections, I'm talking about calibration, much more important to me. Bottom line, I can't prepare a single image using my MacBook (but I knew that before I bought it, or at least suspect, and frankly that's not it's role on my workflow). But, on one or two occasions I needed it to correct images "on the road" and I couldn't. Back to the studio I went...
Of course YMMV.
But, if I have only one monitor to do my job, It certanly wouldn't be a glossy one. That's what is keeping me from buying a new iMac (and I would like to have 4GB ram instead of 2, among other things).
Just my experience.

I can see the pro machines sticking with the square boxy design. The consumer machines will follow/adopt the tappered look like the iMac and air. The MacBook air keyboard should be on all models. If apple
Can make the mbp thinner or cut some
Slack fromnthe design, now is their chance to
Do it. They haven't made any revolutionary design changes on the mbp since before the intel chips. A new
Trackpad
Is definitely around the corner. Maybe next year for a new desktop keyboard
And
Mouse. High def will be
Next year standard.

Hopefully the new MacBooks will have a working return key...

To all the doubters...

They will be released mid-october. They will be aluminum cased. Both of these were confirmed for me by the Apple employee/rep at the local BestBuy. That was all she'd confirm for me though, nothing feature-wise.

So, both the MacBook and the MacBook Pro?

or

one will be released before the other in time?
I was only interested in the MacBook (non-Pro) so that's all I was talking with her about. I find it hard to believe they'd launch an updated MacBook without a Pro to accompany it.

When we finished up talking about software and updates from where I am now I said "Alright, I'll see you in a few weeks for a new MacBook," to which she said "Yep, that sounds right...we'll have them within 72 hours of the announcement"

I really can't see how/why they'd know though. Apple Store employees themselves don't know when new stuff is being released.

She was an Apple employee, not an employee of BestBuy. I know people further in apple too, who said exactly what she said as well.

Unless they're all being fed the same lines, I see it being true.

So, how fast can it be produced, assembled and shipped? If they're still in multiple prototypes testing, I doubt there will be ready for the upcomming 10.14.2008 (rumored)event, "Lets MacBook"! Don't you think?

According to other sources, the MacBooks and MacBook Pros may already be shipping. Plus, if Apple is anywhere near releasing a new product (which most of us, including myself, believe they are), prototype testing should long be over. Even if that controversial picture of a new MacBook Pro was real (and I feel that it's absolutely not), the picture was old. I'm glad is wasn't released earlier; this site would have been "MacBook Rumors" for the last six months. We'd all be going mad by now.

What are you talking about? I and quite a few others have been waiting for around 9+ months so far!

And yes, I'm going quite mad.

rumored release dates do get pushed back every now and then.

Haha, that's an understatement.

Most likely she was making an educated guess like everyone else. Apple never pre-announces these updates and no one at the Apple Store or Best Buy know anything until the stock shows up on their doorstep and they open it.

If she is speaking from direct knowledge then I would say this Tuesday would be the release date as the only way she would know anything would be if shipments were already on their way to the stores.
