What if the new MacBook Pro gets lighter without getting thinner where it counts? Kodak recently released a new digital photo frame with oled technology and Sony is about ready to sell the first ever oled TV to the public. What if the MBP got an oled screen? That sounds "pro" enough for its price tag. Would this possibly stop everyone from complaining about thinness and thickness and lightness and heaviness?

Have you looked into 15" and 17" oled prices?

OLED isnt coming yet.

The point is, getting thinner is not a bad thing. It's something many Americans don't like to embrace. Maybe too much pressure?

It's one thing to be thin to a healthy extent. It's another to have a thin-obsession where one's thin-ness interferes with basic functions.

:D

Good point. But I think we shouldn't get ourselves too worked up about something we're not yet certain of. Let's just wait and see what Apple has in store for us. :D

Long live :apple:!

All these comments about an anti-glare film are completely INANE.

An accessory, like speakers, like a mouse, is not the same as buying a $10 film to put on a several HUNDRED dollar DISPLAY. The most vividly interacting aspect of your computer, the display, not your mouse, not your laptop speakers, not your keyboard, not your external hard drive, not your stickers on the back of your laptop, but we're talking about your 1440x900 pixels 16 million color DISPLAY.

And you want to put some piece of crap $10 anti glare film over it? I don't understand why it bothers the people that DON'T WANT a matte screen that other people do. Enough already. People are CORRECT when they say, if I'm paying $2000 for a laptop, how about one of the most expensive aspects of it, and the most visually sensitive, at least have the option (as previously) between matte and glossy?

Here here!! If we were at a pub I'd buy you a drink, well said.

It's like people don't get what apple is about. If you want ports for every occasion, go get a dell. Steve jobs has always been about making things simpler and easier to use. The thinner and lighter a laptop is the more likely you are to take it with you so you can use it more wherever. It's like people who love apple products but complain about the focus on looks.

Apple unlike every other computer manufacturer in world want to make computers friendly & simple while being functional. In order to achieve that you can't try to make your computers like swiss army knives. If my laptop doesn't connect to 2 different types of firewire, does't have 4 usb ports, ethernet, modem and all the other things I would only need if I was using it as a desktop, then so what.

I want a laptop to be a laptop, and it seems apple does too. It's so great that someone gets it.

Seems more like you're arguing for supersized PDAs a la the trimmed down macbook (aka the Macbook Air). "What's the use for any other ports than one to plug your iPhone or Touch into?"
I'm sorry, but there are MANY people who actually use those ports on an every day basis, and not just if we were using a desktop. Every bloody day. Since you don't need either of those ports, you hardly need anything resembling a "pro" computer. You could propably make do with the air, but certainly the Macbook, assuming you need an optical drive.

Having the dock on the trackpad (provided that the trackpad is a screen, entirely possible with a screen a bit smaller than the iphone/ipod touch) might be a good idea. It opens up a bit more desktop space, especially on laptops. Then have the applications open only with a special touch, ie. double tap, etc to keep from opening apps on mistake.

Unfortunately it doesn't make sense for those of us that don't use the dock. I reckon a fixed dock on the touchpad would be irritating.

I have always thought of a MacBook Pro like a desktop replacement and the MacBook Air as an ultra-portable, feature stripped laptop.
No need to remove features from the MBP there's already the Air!

I just don't understand why people here are getting upset from unsubstantiated rumors on features specifically the MBP may not have. Apple knows who their pro customers and won't remove features that their customers need to perform their work. Specifically I am talking about this matte vs glossy issue that seem to have taken this forum by storm.

The problem with this analysis is that other manufacturers DO manage to make seriously full featured, multi-port notebooks, that weigh the same or less than the MacBook Air (much less the MacBook or MBP), some INCLUDING optical drives: Lenovo X61s; Lenovo 200/300; Toshiba R500 series; Dell 1330; Fujitsu; Sony. The point isn't that simple is better, the point is that you don't have to make so many COMPROMISES to fit the package.

I honestly think to just make things easier and drop this MacBook Pro non-sense and make all of their laptops just MacBook, since the differential line is fading.

13" MacBook - Black, White, Silver

15" MacBook - Black, Silver

17" MacBook - Black, Silver

It pretty much will follow their current matrix for the iPod:

iPod Classic - MacBook

iPod Nano - MacBook Air

iPod Touch - MacBook (Touch) ??

iPod Shuffle - you're asking for too much

My $0.02:D

I might as well weigh in on this while today's work downloads.

I prefer matte screens, particularly on a portable. I respect that some people are satisfied with glossy. What I don't think is reasonable is for somebody to suggest that you slap a light diffusing film on an LCD screen. That's an additional layer of light reducing, spectrum-altering schmutz between me and my work. Why not have all matte screens, with the option of a $10 shiny piece of plastic gloss? Because that would equally suck. Let's leave the surfacing to the professionals, and offer both options to at least the pro level of hardware.

Okay. Back to work. Outside. Without shifting around to see the screen.

All MBP models have had some sort of multi-touch (scrolling, right-click etc). I said the same thing when they came out with the newer "multi-touch" models but they didn't release any support for my original MBP.

These things happen, especially with Apple. They tend to like to drop support for anything less than current-generation.

This issue was addressed back when penryn MBPs were released in February: former MBP have reduced multitouch capabilities because the HARDWARE is different, not just the software. So it is not a question of Apple not wanting to activate it, it's just impossible without a product recall.

For me, I want a typical PC laptop that happens to run OS X. The Apple thinness obsession greatly annoys me. It means less room for extra features and power, and a laptop that will get a LOT hotter.

You're probably right....some of this "insider information" is nothing more than some wanker making educated guesses based on Apple's tendencies and then making up lies about 'insiders' who told them they've seen the machines. Some of these gossip columnists are gambling hoping they nail it (based on cumulative speculation) and cover their asses by using 'secret informants' who obviously can't be named (or proven that they exist for that matter).

Notice all the rumours are predictable and nothing is that unusual or adventurous? Basically the matte rumour comes out of what they did to the MacBook and iMac lines....I seriously doubt they would do that to the Pro lines. If those rumours are false then I can only hope that the loss of the firewire 400 is too. IF those 2 rumours turn out to be true I'll buy the best latest edition I can & stick with that. I'd rather take my chances w/ Nvidia then go w/o matte & 400. I can't stand glossy and I need BOTH 400 & 800 for my audio setup and can't live w/ one 800 port.

In this election season, you can't get away with that without a fact check!

Toshiba R500- 12 inch screen is smaller than MBA's 13 inch
Dell 1330- about a pound heavier than MBA
Fujitsu S6520- about a pound heavier than MBA, much thicker
Sony Vaio SR- 1.2 pounds heavier than MBA
Lenovo X61s- .3 pounds heavier, thicker, and no touchpad, looks sort of ugly
Lenovo 300- .3 pounds heavier with 6-cell battery, looks sort of ugly

If there's no demand for the MBA's combination of thinness, looks, and minimal features, Apple would likely discontinue it. Why hate when you can appreciate (that there are other laptops to choose from)?

I concur 100%

That's almost word for word my exact thoughts i will risk the older model refurbished these rumours are a little distracting and i believe non factual apple's history shows that the majority of the time they don't let us down.

lets just hope we hear some news abt the new macbooks tomorrow, i really want one by end of oct.......

but is this for a real that macbook is getting released on 14 oct`?????
