I'm sure this has been mentioned / asked in this thread before, but does anyone know of a website with a technical breakdown of the new sandy core i3/5/7 mobile cpus? I'm interested in being knowledgeable about the differences ahead of the launch of the new Macbooks, regardless of what they end up containing.
Looked through the thread and did a couple google's but wasn't able to get anything that highlighted the mobile chips, only desktop.
Much appreciated!

Sandy Bridge

Well thats a loaded question. If it's going to be an email, facebook, youtube, and sykpe machine then you dont need to go all out.

Apple loves customers like you ;)

well that and heavy photoshop use, video editing, some adobe audition, DJ software, FL studio, some raw imaging and lot's of 20+mb photos, oh and the occasional chatroulette

What happened to Liquidmetal?

I have noticed nobody is talking about the black MacBook Pro that was rumored just a couple of days ago. I thought that machine looked like a beast. Does anybody here think apple will use Liquidmetal for the casing or the battery?

With the consolidation of the product line, e.g., cutting the white macbook. Think they would call the notebooks released next week mac 13, mac 15, and mac 17?

i3 = Hyper-threading
i5 = Hyper-threading + Turbo Boost
i7 = Hyper-threading + Turbo Boost + 1 extra MB of L3 Cache

Was about to make the switch from PC -> Mac, but lack of i5 in a 13" is a dealbreaker for me.

Anyone know how the SB i3's compare to a non-SB i5?

Considering the fact that there's only one suitable i3 for the MBP's, there will almost definitely be an i5 in the higher end 13".

Audition is still in beta, and it's not like the current PC version. Many things are missing from the Mac version, because they basically have to re-write the entire program. That said, I love Audition, and am thankful there's a Mac version to use, even if it is only a beta.

Are you high? The performance increase of a good SSD is palpable. XBench on a MBP i7 2.8 w/ SSD = 339 compared to XBench of same machine with clean 7200 500GB HDD = 164. That's a 100% performance increase.

Yeah but you lose storage capacity. SSD is not worth it yet. I'll wait for the storage size to go up and the price to go down.

HDD play my movies and music just fine. And as for opening and accessing word or excel files, I don't really think SSD offer much benefit over HD.

Well we don't really have any solid information to back this up, just intel's teaser ad.

As much as I would love a 6830m, the nvidia equivalent would be more like the 540m being seen in some SB optimus equipped 15" laptops. I would be much happier with the 540m than a 525m but would probably prefer the ATI. I'm assuming they'll go nvidia since nvidia has developed optimus and even though Apple uses it's own proprietary graphics switching, my guess is it still uses some sort of nvidia technology to help it. Does ATI have realtime graphics switching in any of their lineups yet?
I would at least aim for the GeForce GT 445/555M in comparison to the 6830M.

That's because those rumors are completely made up and the intel ad was clearly not a real picture of a computer, probably just a render that was made specifically for the ad. There is absolutely 0 chance that intel knew what the next MacBook Pro looks like, and there is also a very slim chance (I am gonna say 10%) that they use Liquidmetal.

Apple won't use Liquidmetal until it is 100% perfect, and I think it's still another year or so out to be honest.

You truly do not know what you are talking about. SSD is excellent for opening and accessing word files. That's what it is designed for.

A standard HDD for movies and music is fine and that is likely why the rumor is that there will be two drives. One for applications and one for the media.

do you realize how little sense that makes? Obviously every computer EVER has a graphics card. At least if it had a display of any kind.

Um, no. You are confusing terminology. A "card" is a card. Most laptops instead use on board graphics.

I'm new to Macs, this will be my first. RAM easy to upgrade yourself? I'm assuming you don't pay Apple for the RAM upgrade?

Yes, very easy to upgrade yourself. You can buy RAM from many sources.

I kept my hands in my pocket since 2006, I am proud of my 17" 2.16 MacBook Pro but the screen and the keyboard are on the fritz so it is time and this time I am doing more portability with the 13" since I DJ and the 17" was very clumsy for that (I just feel inlove with the screen wen I purchased it) can't wait :)
