Or maybe instead of the white plastic on the MacBooks at $999 they are going to use this silver metallic plastic...? I took pictures of my MBA when I got it with the plastic on and it didn't look like this! :p

Could be, but I think it's very unlikely. I think it's just the lighting and the foil that makes it look a bit different here.

I don't think Apple would go for silver plastic, it's too chinese-knockoffish.

Given such a short lead time, I will concede that Apple probably won't release a Sandy Bridge CPU with Nvidia GPU laptop tomorrow.

this article is about desktopcpus. nvidia said they won't build chipsets for upcoming intel cpus. and a grafic-chipset makes no sence on sandy bridge, becouse qpi or hypertransport is missing.

I would have liked "LightSpeed" but who care about the name of the port anyway. Just put it to use and be happy.

Is obvious no?

"Thunderbolt" = speed of sound = Copper Peak = slower first gen I/O tech

"LightningBolt" = speed of light = Light Peak = much faster second gen I/O tech

I look at this release and just think of the predictability and massive yawn factor. Oooh, an i5, big deal. Crappy Intel GPU more than detracts from that. The only thing I welcome here is the long overdue option of the matte/AG display on the 13". But even that's almost certain to be only available on the top spec machine.

I think I love my MBA even more.

13”
2.66 GHz C2D
4GB 1066 MHz Ram
320GB SATA @ 5400

If these released specs are true – I am wondering if an upgrade is worth it. Honestly, I will probably rarely use “Thunderbolt.”

Is a 2.3 GHz i5 going to be considerably faster than what I have now? It sounds like the intel graphics card may be worse (or at least not that much better) than the Nvidia 320. Is this correct?

For CPU intensive tasks, yes the Core i5 will be significantly faster than the Core 2 Duo running at a similar clock speed. It has "hyperthreading," which means that it makes the OS act as if it has 4 cores at its disposal when it really has only 2. That speeds up multitasking.

The Intel IGP will be slower at higher-detail graphics, but at lower-detail tasks, the Core i5 will more than offset that. The Intel IGP on its own benchmarks about the same as the NVIDIA 9400m.

personally, I dont beleive it. This is the display port. And if this is true, then I'm not upgrading my late 2008 MBP to a new one because I need my display port for my 27inch LED display!

Wow this SUCKS. These specs are akin to an early 2008, middle of the line laptop for every other manufacturer (with the exception of Thunderbolt). Should be priced no higher than $499 (though I think it's safe to assume it will slide into the $999 slot).

Why does Apple hate their customers?

lol, god I hope you're just trolling.

Core i5 processors came to market in fall 2009. And you obviously don't understand the difference between Core Duo and Core i5 or any other architecture.

There surely weren't any with 1333 MHz RAM, and no cheap "middle of the line" model had a backlit keyboard, display port, multi-touch trackpad, gigabit ethernet etc. Hell, the MBP didn't even have the unibody case until late '08.

So no—it's not even bloody close to an early 2008 model.

FFS, a p.o.s. Dell with similar performance specs is $1K.

It's got Harry Potter's broomstick model for a name and it's got the Harry Potter scar for an icon.

Maybe JK Rowling has bought into Apple shares and is now dictating things.

Also, if some of these photos are from Germany, perhaps Apple does include Intel logos on their German boxes or decided to for marketing purposes. Markets are different. A box is an easy change.

i'm from germany and have a MBP from early '10 and it does have a intel chip but not the intel logo on the package

HTC seem to own the ThunderBolt trademark.
I doubt that since there are a lot more products with their name. One of them was one of the planes that won WW II and another is the A-10 which is wreaking havoc in Iraq, etc. In that regard it is actually a good name, something to be proud of! And for you patriots: they're both from the same American company so you can be even more proud!

thank you for this post. if thats true i will just keep my 3 week old MBP LOL. the most graphic intensive task i do i photoshop and occasional movie editing and its fine with that already.

You realize they used a quadcore CPU in those benchmarks right?... It's integrated so the CPU carries a some of the weight off the gpu

You do realize the hd3000 wasn't integrated onto the cpu during those tests but was its own actual chip. The sandy bridge is the first gen CPU to feature the GPU built into the CPU sharing the Level 3 memory. Also you have to consider the improved FSB speeds for accessing the ram will have a benefit for the new MBP's.

I don't understand this sentence then...
"This article covers the performance of the HD Graphics 3000 inside the Intel Core i7-2720QM CPU"
"Concerning the integrated Intel HD Graphics 3000, you should keep in mind that it is - depending on the CPU - differently clocked. While the tested i7-2720QM CPU clocks the graphics chip at 650 up to 1300 MHz, the clock rate of the GPU only ranges from 650-1200 MHz in the i7-2635QM or from 650-1100 MHz in the i7-2630QM. In ULV processors the clock rate is even lower at 350-900 MHz. So, the performance drops accordingly."

I share some serious concerns about the symbol being used for the new port with a previous poster. It's not that commonly used in Australia and the US, but is very prominently used in Europe (and presumably elsewhere) to denote electricity - it's almost equivalent to a danger symbol. If this is indeed a real image, as it appears to be, I foresee lawsuits in the none too distant future when some poor sod tries plugging a power cable in there and - at best - it costs him his laptop.

Unobtainium.

Beat me to it.:)

I think some of you are missing the point that all signs/reports are pointing to this being the base model MacBook. And if they keep the price point of the white one, it's a pretty big deal.

I hope the high-end MBPS and iMacs have more than one Thunderbolt port, though. While its really nice that Lightpeak is on its way now I don't know if I'd buy a machine with two usb ports and one tb port, even though next september i'd have simply purchased the iMac even if lightpeak wasn't out at that time. This just makes me think I should wait a while till they fully support it and drop USB.

Lol the ignorance of some of the people whining about stuff they don't even understand is hilarious. Impressive bump from apple I'm excited to see the specs on the 15" and 17" and how their going to implement lightpeak into other devices.

Tell me what model laptop. A claim like that with no information on model is BS.

HP DV6T Quad Edition with i7-2720QM, that good enough for you?. Jeez. How did you miss all the hoopla about the Sandy Bridge laptop recalls?

****ing hell.

1280x800

Really. Really? If this is not a fake, then thats just pure ****.

Also, integrated graphics . Ha ****ing ha

If both are true, I'm regretting waiting for the new Macbooks when I could have gotten a great Windows laptop for $600 just a short time ago.
