The base Pro will still look weak because it will ship with a 320GB HDD. However, upgrade to a 128GB or 256GB SSD and the story changes dramatically. I'm guessing they will be reasonably-priced CTO upgrades.
I don't think Apple has ever had a reasonably-priced CTO upgrade.

oh... you are wrong, becouse there is the core i5 2410M with the same specs as the leaked pictures.

and... there is no other possibility for apple in the 13'' to do it without an intel gpu. only with an dedicated gpu-card and this is for the 15 or 17''.

Well, I'll eat my words then. I'm still dubious about the specs, though, but I'll concede that I was wrong about that. :)

Same form factor?

So basically the form factor has stayed the same as the current Macbook Pros?
All i see besides the thunderbolt (ridiculous name and logo) is that the machine has stayed the same. Same Trackpad, same thickness, same everything.

Also, I do NOT see the white macbook going away. You would be surprised how well this item sells with "females" based just on the color and plastic look.

How do customers lose by Apple having a larger margin than their competitors?

simple.. they charge more for less value...
let's say the macbook costs 400$ in production and they charge 1000$.. apple wins 600$ -> large margin BUT us (the customers) have to pay 1000$ for a 400$ macbook!

if apple wouldn't the so greedy they could charge less and more of us would be happy apple customers :)

Don't be rude, he just gave you facts and they are true. I will not judge apple yet, but if this spec to a price around 1100$ is true, it's just sad and disappoining...

no... show me one product with the same (or something like) specs. and we don't know if this will be the new cheapest macbook.

We are all know nothing more faster baseline series. When apple release product always 1.2 or 1.3 faster than baseline product. Please no body wait much more that. But some part better than baseline HD Cam coming hope USB 3 be come. And much important part SSD for all of us.

1280x800 just doesn't make any sense. Why wouldn't they just use the same HD screen from the 13" MBA?

It sucks when something is BTO because it means you can't purchase it on Amazon.

Exactly. I would rather go for the screen on the 11" Air than the new "MBP" (or MacBook, depending on if they drop the white one).

And 4.5 lbs? I thought it was a half a pound lighter. I'd actually rather have the "leaked" specs (with the 12 hour battery) than this if this is the Macbook Pro.

You are still exaggerating. :)

It's got the i5 in it. Somehow an i5 is severely underpowered? I'm not sure what planet you are from.

Lenovo G560 usually less than $700 but its on a 15 inch screen , HP does it for a lower price. I am not sure what 13 inch models are out there.

I've really got to stop coming to these forums. The useful information and insight/whining ratio tips more and more in favor of the latter with the passage of time.

Light Peak/Thunderbolt is huge. This is a big step toward one port to rule them all. This is also the closest thing we've had to a docking station in a long time. I'm sure there will be some kind of hub device that I plug my monitor, USB, Firewire and even network into and it plugs into that one port. Too bad it doesn't deliver power too.

If the rumors about the white MacBook going away are true and this is the low end model, can we at least save the "I'm buying a PC!" comments until tomorrow. Frankly, I wish you guys would just buy your PCs and stop trolling this forum.

The i5 is surprise since everyone was saying i3 for the low end model. (Which wouldn't have been any real improvement over a C2D.)

The optical drive is still there which is a bit of a bummer and I look forward to seeing if they manage to get dedicated video in the higher end 13" model as well as if any of the rumors of a resolution bump are true. It looks like this update won't be quite enough to get me to replace my last generation model and the market for Thunderbolt devices/hubs/adapters/whatever has some time to grow.

I also don't know that I have any interest in these first-gen chipsets.

Like I said, it's underpowered...
Yes it has a big CPU but overall it's gonna feel slower than the Air in daily basic computing tasks (because of the slow hard drive) and it's gonna be at best performing the same in games as last years model.
It's only gonna be better in some specific CPU intensive apps.

I really want a MBP because of the form factor and the features not because of the specs but somehow I was still hoping for something decent...
I guess I'll have to consider which is better for my use: this with a student discount or a refurbed 2010 one.

It's just...a very underwhelming update :(

YOu're exaggerating again.

An i5 machine is hardly underpowered. And you don't even know everything about the new MBP yet.

I just think you wanted the impossible. A big dedicatedgpu, lots of battery life and a large SSD on top of the i5 and all for only ~$200 more than a refurb 2010 model.

simple.. they charge more for less value...
let's say the macbook costs 400$ in production and they charge 1000$.. apple wins 600$ -> large margin BUT us (the customers) have to pay 1000$ for a 400$ macbook!

Are you saying you're not a happy customer now? That you begrudgingly dole out money for Apple products and curse them while doing so? Sure, we'd all love everything in life to be cheaper, but the fact is people are more than willing to pay the prices that Apple charges. What would they gain in lowering the price? More customers? The people who want a Mac will find a way to purchase one. Lowering the price a couple of hundred dollars wouldn't have a huge impact on their sales I don't believe.

The ignorance of [some] Apple fans

Please tell me you are joking...

The alienware is significantly taller than any MBP. If I wanted a hunk of plastic that a company stuffed full of hardware, didn't care about build quality, ran Windows, and was the height of Webster's dictionary, I'd be a Dell, HP, Gateway, Alienware customer.

As it is, I will GLADLY pay a premium for a solidly built laptop that runs OS X.

People comparing this to what Acer (or alienware) has to offer makes me giggle.

Alienware laptops (at least M15x) have cases made of anodized aluminum. Unlike MacBooks, Dell laptops come in three colors. Let's hope that some day Apple will learn how to use colors with aluminum too.

Imo, this is fake. I can't see Apple releasing the MacBook Air months ago, calling it the "next generation of MacBooks", then coming with specifications like this several months later.

While Sandy Bridge and Light Peak certainly are nice and interesting features, the lack of SSD and the better screen simply doesn't sound right. In general, the Air model would feel more responsive and would deliver a better experience. I can't see them going in this direction. The models don't get any lighter, there's still the obligatory SuperDrive in there, and they would be taking a (small) step backwards in terms of graphics.

Except for the users who really need raw processing power, without much more, in a package that is as small as possible, the MacBook Air is a better option. It's lighter, better looking and would perform the same or better in day-to-day tasks.

If this is true however, it'll be a huge disappointment.

Hmm, I do find this somewhat underwhelming.

It's likely been stated before but there isn't really anything better about this update (assuming of course it's the MBP base 13") other than the i5 processor and slight HDD bump. The graphics are slightly worse, but otherwise it's the same machine.

Lenovo G560 usually less than $700 but its on a 15 inch screen , HP does it for a lower price. I am not sure what 13 inch models are out there.

Then by all means, go and complain on a Lenovo or HP forum.

One of these days some of you guys are going to realize a few things:

1. Apple has absolutely no intention of competing in the low-end price market. The profit margins suck and it's simply not where they want to be in the market. Jobs' comments disparaging netbooks had nothing to do with their size and everything to do with their price point.

2. There's more to a laptop than hardware specs. My MBP is well built and has a lot of features that I'll gladly take in place of beefed up video—the trackpad being chief among them. My laptop is my work machine so the usefulness of a GOOD mobile I/O device is 100s of times more important than playing Crysis on my laptop. (Having a good OS is also a big bonus.)

If you guys want Lenovos and Toshibas and Dells... get them. Please. Get them now. Go to their forums and rumor sites. Please. Do it. Stop trolling this board with your little frowny faces acting like Apple has personally robbed you. You're not entitled to the computer you want at the price point you want.

I've been paying the "Apple Tax" since 2005 (excluding my IIgs from back in the day) and would have gladly paid it for the OS and decent font rendering alone.

Can we stop using underpowered when the correct phrase would be adequately powered?
