Apple has found the problem. The sound should be directly coming from the speaker on the right side. In the e-mail I recieved they said engineering has found the problem in the inverter.

Edit: Oh and it can be fixed by sending it into apple for a repair.
Good to hear!!! Problem is there are 2 sounds I hear. 1 from left speaker. Another from right side of the screen. :(

The LCD noise that was bothering me seems to have gone away completely after a couple of days of use. I've been using it for the past few hours and it hasn't come back, regardless of the brightness setting.

My computer is giving off a sound similar to the sound of a TV with snow on it but with a higher pitch (a buzzing sound, whining). The weird part is that if i am dragging a image or scrolling with a side bar in a window the sound diminishes. The sound is coming from the top of the keyboard. What is happening?
I believe this noise is normal. I had one 17" Powerbook sent away for repair, and it came back with a replaced logic board; was still there. It also came back with a big scratch on it, so I received a replacement machine; was on that one too. (and I'm still using it today)

On the Powerbook G4 at least, if you put in the Tiger disc and search for CHUD, then install it, you get a "processor" preference pane installed. Disabling "cpu nap" stops the noise.

Loading up iMovie HD and previewing most of the "titles" would turn it into a "chirping" noise, and again, this is fixed by disabling CPU Nap.

Cool, you fixed it by lowering your battery life (stopping the CPU from powering down). Oh wait that isn't really a great fix... especially for a problem that should not be there. If more people complained rather than just accepting it then the problem would probably have been fixed before the macbook pro was released.

I did complain, but three logic boards all did it, so the fault either lies elsewhere or it's not a fault.

My iMac did this too, and I seem to remember some people complaining about it with their Powermacs as well. It just seems that many people don't notice it.

It hasn't made a bit of difference to my battery life though.

It's definately a fixable problem. I hope apple fix it soon and i hope you get yours repaired under warranty.

It exists on my 1.83ghz Macbook and it's really quite annoying. However, there is a way to make it go away. There is this widget called mirror that uses the isight, if I start it and close it the sound will go away. But it will come back if you start ichat or reboot. It's pretty annoying to have to do that though.

Why is this not front page news on this site or at least 'Page 2'???? This is clearly a MASSIVE issue with the whole range of Macbook Pro's. Apple cannot just keep quite about a fault like this. Whoever heard of an mac that required the user to turn on an application to stop getting a headache?!!!

the reading I have done shows 3 clear problems with a lot (arguably MOST) Macbook:

1. Seems to be the most common - CPU idle whining noise. So we know that photobooth and maybe Entourage stop this but thats not the point! Hopefully this is a software issue that can be fixed. If so SORT IT APPLE.

2. LCD Screen buzzing noise - I personally don't have experience on this but ive seen a video clip of someone demonstrating this. For me this seems more hardware related.

3. Laser type high pitch noise - when you hold the laptop at an angle, again no experience of this but ive seen a video clip of someone demonstrating this.

Right, so Apple have been bragging that they released the intel machine ahead of schedule but quite frankly who wants a sub standard product a month early??

Now don't get me wrong here guys this is a SUPER rant but justified in my book. I love what Apple have done to the computer industry and there brilliance is all there for us to see. But someone step up and formally write that there might be something up with a percentage of MBP's.

Even if its only 5% of MBP's that have 1 of these issues (personally I think its more like 70%)

Surely this is more serious than ipods that have an easily scratchable surface (how much press coverage did that get?!!!!)

To me its like buying an ipod that plays a whining noise over the top of your music.

Mac user's create amazing a beautiful things with these tools, let us please do it in peace.

Whats interesting is I have the CPU whine, but it goes away when I don't do anything for 10 or so seconds. The second I touch the keyboard or trackpad its back. I really hope its fixable in software. 2nd core disable and mirror widget also 'fix' it - but have been shown to increase power draw.

what to do?

I also encountered the noise. I described it as the buzzing of an electric wire in the distance... Applecare told me to take it in to a retailer, and the retailer said it was the fan. They replaced the fan, and the technician said it was ok... But the noise is still there. Advice? I don't live near an applestore, and would like to know if I'll have to ship my computer away...

i've been using my MBP (2.0GHz stock) all this while and there wasn't any buzzing sound. Just today, when i was trying to start a video conference on iChat did the buzzing start on the left speaker. Its like a crackling sound which gets annoying cos it's on and off. Think its related to the iSight/microphone in any way?

edit: as ramuman said, the sound only seems to appear when things are loading. i tried to press the body of the laptop above the harddrive and the sound did get softer. i think its some vibration problem with the harddisk rotation and the laptop chasis.

This thread makes me want to not order the MBP! I was planning to go to the store tommorow and pick up the 2.0 Dual Core MBP!

Should I wait? I'd rather get it now and deal with the noise and have Apple fix it when they find the solution. We are all covered for a year so there should be no issues with customer service.

Bad news for some of you.
I have changed my MacBook Pro because of the cpu whining. Unfortunately the new Book has it too. I am not sure to change it again or just to give it back and buy something different. Perhaps I give Apple a last try. Obviousley it is a very common defect. Otherwise it could not have been that I have the same error twice. Positive is, that it took Apple just one week to send a new one from Shanghai to Berlin, Germany. But on the other hand. What was it good for?

March 13 - APPLE STORE gives me the boot

Well, just like quite a few others- my MBP has buzz or whine (They treat them separately, so pick the right one- I failed with 'buzz').
I got the company line, "Operating in normal capacity" - the store personnel took it in the back and came out with the opposite finding. He said it made the appropriate noises when a task was chosen. I work in a quiet environment and hear the silence ONLY when apps are running. Store manager said I was free to return the product with a 10% restocking fee. I asked for a Customer Satisfaction call by the manager- but was told to pound sand (not literally).
I admit, I feel like I chose unwisely for getting a new Apple model.
And based on the Apple Store in Irvine, California, I would recommend waiting until the forums report less issues before buying a MBP.

I haven't decided what to do yet- but I did lose faith in "APPLE CUSTOMER SERVICE".

I just got mine today, fired her up and sure enough.... HUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

I'm sure there will be a fix for it soon. I'm not too worried, we are all covered 1 year under warranty.

Covered? Depends on the POV.

Careful about that assumption- 'covered' under a 1-yr warranty is only good if they agree its a problem. The two gentlement at the apple store told me today that the 'noise' was within acceptable standards and 'perfectly normal'. And I agree that it does not impair the functionality- so the bottom line is: find a sympathetic ear in Apple or hope that an approved problem arises.

I've got Apple on the line now and attempting to escalate.

I'm not to worried about it. It goes away and comes back... I'm sure they will come out a fix. I do not think it is an internal issue.

I suspect that the whine is of such high frequency that some people simply can't hear it as their hearing range is lower. If this is true then more younger people would be more likely to hear the whine than older people. Indeed, the fact that I can clearly hear the whine on my own MacBook whilst my father swears there is no noise apart from the fan seems to confirm this.

So far I have heard 6 MacBooks (two my own, two colleagues' in the office and two at a local Apple reseller) and every one has had the whine. The earliest one was shipped in the very first batch as it was ordered on the 10th Jan and the latest one arrived just four days ago. As the earliest and latest both have the whine I don't think Apple have changed anything in the manufacturing process as yet.

I opted against a MBP because of the reports of bugs and mainly because pro apps lack native support. The problem is I can't find any loaded 15" G4's around. PM if any of you want to sell your 15" G4 Powerbook.

I've had mine for about a week now and love it.

Yes, I have the buzz, but so what? I do the mirror widget trick when it's noticeable or after I reboot and if anything it just forces me to get up and move around the house or listen to music, which is always a good thing.

So, I'll be casually waiting for Apple to fix it... meanwhile, to everyone else - Don't let this ruin your next few months.

My friend who fixes computers pointed this out on older Powerbooks he worked with. He could hear a noticeable whine while the owners (who were older) couldn't hear a thing. Maybe the problem is that the Q&A people are too old to hear the buzz.
