Sent my 1.83 back for a refund.
I really, really like the machine except for the LCD buzz/tone noise. They refused a replacement so I asked for a refund. Apple must not have any confidence that the replacement would be error free. I am not going to spend $2000 plus dollars and talk myself into thinking everything is okay.:(

It seems like ALL of the MBP's have the processor whine.

Because it looks like a whine that comes FROM the processor, as many users of non-Apple Core Duo laptops have been saying they have the whine too.

The people who say there is no whine are most likely older users who wouldn't hear something of that frequency.

I'd like to see a case where a user returns their MBP due to the whine and their new MBP does NOT have the whine.

I think I'm going to ask for my MBP to be replaced. (I'm getting it replaced due to having a display whine, not just processor.) I'm going to a local Apple Store on Saturday. If I get a replaced one and it whines, I'm going to ask for a full refund. It may say that the whine is "within specifications," but my argument would be that it says nowhere on the Apple website or in the MacBook Pro user's manual that the computer may whine, so no MBP buyer has ever agreed to beforehand that a whine would be okay. It's not industry standard for a laptop to whine, so, no, it would not be "within specifications." I'm bringing my lawyer dad, too, so I have backup. I'll tell you all what happens. :)

Luckily, the Genius at my store happens to be a younger guy who's pretty nice, so I imagine he'll agree with me that the whine IS there. I don't know what he'll do about it though.

Maybe age isn't a problem here! I'm not old I don't hear a whine, the only whine I hear is you complaining about a whine. I'm sure you do hear a noise but more than likely all mbp's will have the same noise. I don't believe it's an issue that is a flaw. It's just there, you either learn to live with it or get something else. It's pretty simple once you stop and think about it.

Oh heck no.

"I'm sure you do hear a noise" followed with a "But I don't! So live with it"

? Are you Serious?

Please, take a maturity pill and don't read and comment on something you haven't experienced. Hilarious! Why do you even read this column?

Amazing.

For all of you here for usefull reasons- what would be appropriate if this issue was isolated to Intel's 1.86 core duo?

Did anyone report this with a 2+ mhz ? It would be some consolation to contribute this to Intel, but we'd really just like to have a MBP without the idle-processor noise.

Nope no noise other than your whine. I was right as usual! I read this column knowing i'm going to have one hell of laugh reading your whining posts.

Hmmm. "1965" ... Over 40? I'd say YEP. AGE.

Any editors here willing to censure "sel1965" for mundane, uninteresting, and uninspired posts?

LOL sel1965 Try again. Or not, if you respect your peers here at MacRumors:Forum

Guess this old man gotcha! 7 is that your age or IQ? Maybe both! Good luck next time.

I have a MBP that is error free and i am sure that there are many others out there like me as well. I wouldn't say that ALL MBP are affected that is quite a statement to make actually. My MBP on the whole is really nice and quiet.
The DVD spins a little loud when it starts up but that is not a problem really.

If people do have real issues then i am not surprised that they are not happy because after spending all that money on something to receive something that is malfunctioning is not on.

Roll Call

Any readers here with a MacBook Pro, please feel free to contribute

1.86 GHz
2.0 GHz
2.16 GHz

or a MacMini with a core duo -

It would be awesome to get a feel for the % out there that have these sounds.

Note to the new: Buzz related to LCD brightness will be fixed by Apple
Buzz related to CPU will not, at least as of March ~20 2006.

The latter will go quiet when the CPU (possibly the second) is busy, and can be tested by running photobooth.

Thanks much-

Turn up brightness

I dont know if someone already posted this because im not gonna read all three pages of comments, but i just turned the brightness of my screen to the max and the high pitch sound went away. There is still a quiet murmering (coming from the hard drive im assuming?) but its so much quieter now. Is it bad to have the screen so bright?

512 mb ram, 100 gb 5200rpm, 1.83 ghz

1.83 Macbook pro
LCD Buzz/tone
CPU whine

..Apple is saying both within specs. ya right

2.0 MacBook Pro
CPU Buzz
LCD Buzz (even at full brightness now)

I had the CPU buzz sound since I got it, but it appeared to go away when I installed the CHUD tool and turned on the Processor drop down in the top menu bar, turned it to 1 and then back to 2 and heard no noise change. Maybe something I installed is constantly taking more CPU now, either way I was happy. I had the LCD buzz at anything between off and full brightness, but wasn't an issue.

Well that didn't last long, about a day of noise later the LCD buzz got worse. It now buzzes at any brightness level but off. It's VERY LOUD so loud I can hear it over my headphones listening to music, gives me a slight headache after having it on all day. I can reduce the sound if I press against the bottom right corner of the LCD, a tip I picked up around here.

So I took it to an Apple Genius at a local store and they told me I could have it repaired, but that has long wait times (3-5 weeks). So instead told me to try to return to where I purchased it first. So I am currently dealing with Amazon.com to get a replacement model shipped to me, but having immense communication problems with them. As of right now I should have my replacement by Friday, but no tracking # yet. Hopefully I'll get one without the LCD whine.

I feel really sorry for you guys...Hope it gets sorted.

For the record:

1.83 Macbook Pro

LCD Buzz/tone: NO
CPU whine: YES

and also for the record, COMPUSA is an authorized Apple Service provider- but would rather not deal with this since I purchased it from Apple directly. Might be policy/don't know. Nevertheless, I'm off to a genious location. Probably Monday.

I also find the hard drive noise almost imperceptable- and fan is quieter than my IBM thinkpad (company owned).

Unfortunately I have the CPU whine aswell.
I was wondering if anyone here bought the MBP from toronto`s apple retailer? I would like to exchange it for another one even though I bought it from BestBuy. Is that possible?

Or does anyone know if future updates will take care of that problem in which case I`d be willing to wait.

Also the MBP get`s REALLY HOT. Is this normal? I`m new to mac but my Sony Vaio PCG-K35 doesn`t get nearly as hot as the MBP

Seem to be getting the same noise with my 17" PB Rev E

Actually, I thought I was crazy because the noise the thread starter posted - TV with snow but higher pitched - is exactly what I'm hearing on my 17" PB Rev E.

I can't figure it out. It's not too bad, but it does get noticeable.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

my MBP gets REALLY HOT also.. i guess its normal :)

my MBP gets REAL hot, but as someone else said, elsewhere, the whole casing is one heatsink, it gets hot around places you wouldn't normally be resting your hands on, and it doesn't get so hot it would literally burn you.

haven't read ALL the posts in this thread, but seriously for those who have the high pitched, not very loud, but nevertheless irrating buzz, use the CHUD utility on the OS disk, you can shut off one of the cores, and it reduces the buzz significantly. then when you are doing something intensive, turn both cores on again, and because you are using enough processing power the buzz does stop.

...it really does work, in my case anyway:)

Well mine was sorted out, got my new MBP from Amazon this week.

2.0 MacBook Pro
YES CPU Buzz (but not as bad as my previous MBP, goes away for long periods of time with CHUD tool)
NO LCD Buzz

use the mirror widget instead of chud tools!!

Why would anybody turn off one core? This means less speed at probably more electricity consumption (as the consumption is optimized for both cores interplaying).

You don't have to have the widget running, just launch it, close it, and the whine is gone until you start and stop photobooth or reboot.

This trick was suggested myriad times in these forums.

Very useful sum up. Thank you.
