Guys,

Just wondering..

The recent benchmark of the Macbook pro i7 was with the intel i7 620m. It can only deal with 8 GB Ram maximum. Wouldn't it make sense that the basic models will ship with just 4 GB like it is with the current machines?
2 x 2 GB SODIMMs are dirt cheap compared to 4 GB density ones.

I expect 4 GB total to be the standard for the foreseeable future when you have 2 slot.

For awhile, but remember DDR3 was more expensive when it first came out as well, a 2 x 4 GB standard is coming, but its a ways off from now, maybe in a years time.

Extremely, extremely unlikely. 4GB is the maximum density at the moment. BTO orders are pretty profitable. You won't see 8 GB as standard this year or next.

I wasn't meaning next year as a definant answer. I ment more-so that next year is the easliest possible chance of it happening, when Sandy-Bridge is out.

Even I have my doubts on 4 GB density SODIMMs dropping in price that quickly.

The bulk of the market is still 2 GB for 2 x 2 GB configurations across many lines. I remember getting my 2 x 2 GB for $79 back in December 2007.

Oh, that I could hope that you are wrong! ;)

My 12 GiB X58 system is running out of RAM. Went shopping today for a 12 GiB triple - but still too pricey. I want 18 GiB or 24 GiB - but everyone still wants too much of a premium for the 4 GiB DDR3 DIMMs.

DDR2-800 DIMMs (non-ECC) were down to $40 for 2 x 2 GB kit back in Summer of 2009.

DDR3 started going down until the end of summer 2009 as well. It has been up and up since then for all RAM types. I bought DDR3-1600 (2 x 2 GB kit) for $82 back in September. It's $105 now.

I'm assuming thats a guess on their part, but if so its not so interesting, the only thing new is the processor.
This long of a wait I want something really cool to be added!

Getting high density on SO-DIMMs is challenging. It's going to be years before 8GB becomes the standard. The move from 1 to 2 to 4 as standard happened pretty quickly, and none of those surprised me. 4 has been, in my opinion, where we "should be" for moderate computer usage for a few years now. I'm of the opinion that 4 will be here to stay for quite a while. The only people who need more than 4 are people doing some serious multitasking work or heavy file work (e.g., Photoshop, VMs), and that's not the standard user at all.

It probably doesn't mean anything but on the UK Apple Store site, all totally basic (no upgraded frills) versions of MBPs feature shipping within 24 hours. The one exception to this (until today) was the 13" - which would still ship in the same timescale if you upped the HDD to 320Gb. Now, even just changing that one configuration ups the shipping time to 3 days. Is this indicative of permanently depleted Apple stocks or does this kind of thing happen from time to time?

...and *now* the high-end MBP 13" (and that model alone) will take '5 business days' to ship if you merely upgrade the HDD to 320Gb. I can't see any other model that ships beyond '3 days' on the UK Apple Store site.

So iPad launch and MBP upgrade on the same day? Would be a good way to draw at least some people into the stores. Not that I care anymore, already got a laptop from another manufacturer. Just chatting here for fun. :)

I use the San Jose's Ad often since it's online when I can't get a paper and it tends to reflect nationwide deals as well.

The MacBook goes for $849 refurbished as well if you can live without FireWire. Frankly, I can't live without FireWire but the plastic feels much better in my hands than the aluminium models. The aluminium models are unsettling to touch and experience some rather annoying hard drive vibration issues.

The prolonged wait for updated MacBook Pros continue without any major hints at when they might arrive. A report last week suggested that a shortage of Intel notebook chips could be contributing to the delay.

MacRumors has heard that the MacBook Pro supplies to retailers have abruptly become constrained, possibly suggesting that updates could be imminent.

Meanwhile, one MacRumors reader emailed Steve Jobs directly about concerns about how long he's had to wait for the new MacBook Pro updates and Apple's recent focus on the iPad. He wrote "I recognise the need for secrecy etc but I am really losing heart in the lack of vision for the MBP and Mac Pros. Not expecting a response but as someone who has personally switched dozens of people onto the mac way this is a sad email for me to compose."

As he's been occasionally known to do, Steve Jobs reportedly responded with a short reply that simply said "Not to worry."

So the question is, do the Air's get updated along with the Pro's? If so, what might they have up their sleeves....

I'm so sick of waiting, at this point, I would be happy if they just took the current MBP 13" and added an i5 and nothing else :D.

Question for those who remember the last refresh: Once they announce the specs/enhancements of the new models, are you still usually able to find last year's MBPs (new, not used) for sale at a discount, or are they often next to impossible to find? I'm thinking that if the refresh isn't revolutionary, I may just buy last season's model and save money.
