Heh, obviously not an apple fanboy. Oh well, although I must agree that the Apple MBP specs are outdated, and there are many who are disgruntled with it, but there are still others who love the OS and software.

i enjoy using all platforms, similarly i enjoy using all types of smartphones, but apple's hardware is CLEARLY a rip off, at least with the iphone4 the hardware is ON PAR with most other phones in terms of speed and performance.

I agree, but the whole industry does too. The vast majority of computers currently sold are still USB 2-only. Somehow people manage to find USB 3 models, I still haven't found one without the help of other forum members.

netbooks have usb 3 now... and you can get them from best buy so im not really sure where you are looking.
also usb 3.0 laptops came out back in march of THIS YEAR, (Asus N series)
taking a quick look at newegg there are 130ish motherboards models with usb 3.0, is that enough choice for you?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...&srchInDesc=usb 3.0&ShowDeactivatedMark=False

usb 3.0 is available even on MINI ITX boards!

I generally don't do exhaustive searches, so it's possible that I miss the occasional rare computer at retail that has USB 3. What fraction of Best Buy's computers have USB 3? Is it maybe two or three out of thirty computers on display? This week's weekly BB flier features twelve computers, none of them have USB 3.

I've been looking up HP & Dell's web site too. Again, I don't do exhaustive checks, they probably had one somewhere, they didn't make it easy to search for that feature. I just take a random sampling of the front page and see what I get.

So you consider expansion boards, motherboards (for DIY computer) and a niche high end laptop model as akin to 'mainstream adoption'? the last time I had a check at the local retail store the vast, vast, vast, vast, vast, vast majority of laptops, desktops and devices being sold were USB2.0. Call me back when I walk into a large mainstream retailer and pick up a laptop or desktop at random and find that it has USB 3.0 ports on it then it would have reached mainstream adoption.

im sorry but dell and HP are garbage, hp came in LAST which is freaking sad ,they really are more into the business sector than thing else, just purely disposable work machines (but with 4 hour onsite support)

anyways heres a best buy link to a netbook with usb 3.0

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Asus+-+...218246222153&skuId=1276792&st=1018p&cp=1&lp=1

interesting that best buy doesn't ACTUALLY advertise probably because they unsure of what they sell and their purchasing/webdesign department is full of retards, i dont know, i dont shop stupid stores

uhhh what? have you ever been to fry's? they stock the same stuff new egg has, im not even from the US and i know that frys has the stuff i listed.

and im not sure what you mean by high end laptops, the laptop mentioned above that has usb 3.0 is $379

well closer to the macbook price is this laptop with usb 3 and eSATA (as well as an i7)

I don't actually shop for computers there either, though I do at least glance at them. As far as I can tell, that's the only USB 3 notebooks/netbooks Best Buy offers on their web site, out of roughly 25 models I've checked. That only reinforces my impression that it's still an obscure feature outside the enthusiast market. Even Asus's US front page promotes a notebook with only USB 2.0.

Fry's only has significant footprint in three states, minor footprint in a few more.

Going back to the original post/topic.. Does any one have a rough idea of when the so called update will actually happen? I'm itching to buy a MBP but willing to wait till the end of this month and no longer, especially April/march next year!!!

From the Buyer's Guide on this site, the release dates of MBPs were

2010-04-13
2009-06-08
2008-10-14
2008-02-26
2007-06-05
2006-10-24
2006-01-10

The differences between the days were 309, 237, 231, 266, 224, and 287 days. The mean is 259 days with a standard deviation of 34 days.

Assuming a normal distribution of differences, we would expect that there is a 68% chance of a release between 259-34 and 259+34 days after 2010-04-13, ie between 2010-11-24 and 2011-01-31, and a 95% chance between 259-34*2 and 259+34*2 days after 2010-04-13, ie 2010-10-21 and 2011-03-06. :D

Seriously, innovation in PCs (and particularly Macs right now) seems to be really slow, don't get your hopes up for USB 3 or Blu-Ray. At least my Oct 2006 15-inch MBP has an ExpressCard/34 slot so I can have USB 3 if I want. It's weird hearing people defending :apple: every which way here, justifying the premium price by the unique features one day and the next day saying "oh but USB 3 is still very niche, not many notebooks have it, it takes extra space they don't have on the motherboard to fit the NEC controller chip required, and the design is so wonderful that it has everything you could possibly fit in a 15-inch chassis blah blah". For top dollar I expect top features and top reliability, and based on that chart above Apple isn't providing either.

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/nec-controller-usb-3-pd720200,2682.html

Tom's Hardware explains why progress is so slow:

Intel had problems with its USB 1.1 implementation in the late '90s, and so waited until the ICH4 in 2002 to implement USB 2.0. Since the introduction of USB 3.0 root controllers represents a significant design change and the market is not going to switch from USB 2.0 to 3.0 in only a few months, Intel is playing a conservative game this time around, even though most of us would prefer a more aggressive strategy.

...

Right now, NEC is the only supplier, and without any competition, NEC is keeping the controller cost too high for mainstream adoption. As a result, lower-cost motherboards will not be equipped with USB 3.0 hardware anytime soon.

Wow!!! Thanks for that indepth break down!! I'm not expecting there to be much of an upgrade but a speed bump will see me through just so I know it's going to last me for a year at least before I realise any speed issues with newer programs/games... I'm after an i7 17" mbp and want the best one to ensure it doesn't just get "old and slow" as soon as the next update is out .. I l know it's an impossible game to win by trying to keep up, I'm currently a pc gamer switching to apple, I've spent So much on graphics cards and memory it's insane to just see how little some major upgrades can bring!!

I would have your fingers crossed then that the GPUs are getting a spec bump as well, because the 330Ms aren't that great for serious gaming.

I've been following the next release of the MBP with interest as my old MBP3,1 (Nov'07 incl the original bump-gate 8600M GT!) is fine apart from a possible dying pixel in the screen, a dead battery and the GPU/CPU that's now at the bottom of the power curve.

I'm struggling to find an application that needs the extra speed to justify, given the current climate, the expenditure on a new 15" MBP. I may wait until they release a quad core version + GPU rather than a speed bump.
The only time it needs more speed is compiling and playing games but thankfully the latter is an exception rather than the norm.

People are quick to defend their purchases. Moreover, it is as interesting to read the absolute scorn from those are windows fanatics. Having dealt with the Apple store on two occasions with ipod issues, I had no problem making an MBP my next laptop.

For a perspective, I am a long time DiY desktop hobbyist.

Where will we be able to find out when Apple releases their next conference date? And judging by the date trend in the guide, do you think Apple will hold a conference between now and Christmas? Also, do you think it will be a speed increase or a major overhaul?

Hopefully all our answers will be answered sooner than we think... The apple store is down and being updated right now :)

i'm on the waiting game also.. hope by the end of the month. spec upgrade would be fine for me. usb3 or bluray would just be an add on, if not available so be it. hdmi should be just to remove the adapter cost. :)

Microsoft and Apple agreed that Blu-Ray won't last. It will dies...

Guys... geezus read the news even for non-related Apple. Don't isolate yourself just Apple. I'll call you Apple FanBoy if you do.

Can't believe how many people are being so beggy and desperate. It's just dumb.

If you feel offended... I don't give a dam.

I am sick and tired of people begging for USB 3 and Blu-ray. READ NEWS!

USB 3, next year late 2011 or early 2012! Blu-Ray IN YOUR DREAM. Everything go DIGITAL, NETFLIX, ITUNE STORE ETC.

READ THE EFFING NEWS! STOP NAGGING AND FLOODING THE FORUMS SAME TOPIC CRAP.

give a slap in your face and wake up! you are so spoiled.

iPhone 4 uses Retinal and the ACD uses IPS, not sure what iPad uses

The driver suck really bad right now, the new drivers some people say quadruple FPS!

check back in two months and it will be good enough

Next one is unlikely to have USB3/FW3200 if Lightpeak is out by then, it would be roughly equivalent to FW12800 plus it supplies power

I'm hoping AMD actually

the iPhone 4 display is IPS, retinal is apples stupid way of saying its the highest resolution your eye can perceive.
http://www.oled-display.net/retina-display-apple-vs-amoled

I actually have been living under a rock (made of linear algebra...) for a month (school), so I have to read up about the drivers, as I have an affected machine. maybe that explains why my 3000$ mbp can't play SC2 for crap unless the settings are mid.

Light Peak is interesting, but apple wont drop USB support, and if USB 3 is available on everything else (apple is slow..), then I expect them to replace USB2 with USB3.

I'm sorry but AMD sucks, I was so excited about they're new processors (including the 16 core Bull Dozer which isn't out yet). but frankly, they don't cut it.
thats why my core i7 920 Bloomfield @ 2.66Ghz is better then a 6 core AMD Phenom II X6 1090T @ 3.2Ghz
http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/desktop-cpu-charts-2010/Raw-Performance-SiSoftware-Sandra-2010-Pro-GFLOPS,2409.html

They got my vote for a server though, much cheaper hardware.

USB 3, next year late 2011 or early 2012! Blu-Ray IN YOUR DREAM.

I agree with USB 3. It will come with a mac when Intel make a chipset with it on. Simple as that.

As for blu-ray, I completely disagree.

I need to make Blu-Ray disks now to play my 1080p 7D generated content. Can't do that in OS X. Bugger.

Can I download a 60Gb film instantly? No.

Blu-Ray will NOT go *anywhere* until Internet speeds hit 100M/bits MINIMUM with *no* throttling.

Only Virgin Media supplies that in the UK, and if I downloaded 60Gb 1080p disks (720p isn't good enough BTW) i'd get cut off pretty quickly.

The blu-ray licensing people need to pull their finger out of their arses and make it easy as DVD was to accept.

buy now or wait 2 weeks to see what the updates are?

I would wait until the end of October. Apple has lately been updating parts of its notebook line in October, so I would wait. Macbook Air seems definite, but the Macbook Pro's may get a bump as well.

Why does it seem that apple is sandbagging?!? Maybe because they are, holding back stuff they can put out now just so they can do an update on 6 month cycles. Yes apple wants to make profit at what expense? They make enough profit without having to play us like fools. If the specs weren't so behind the curve already then fine I won't be as frustrated. I'm specifically talking about MBP 13". Just a few posts back I talk about the 6 month old core 2 duo MacBook that would bug down way to easy. All my windows friends think that it's stupid to pay so much for these spec, and it's not like I'm a spec whore but when my computer doesn't function as well as it should because of the weak specs then Im not going to be happy. Now I'm thinking about forgetting the 13 and just going 15 but the price difference is huge, and then the problem is when I price it against a Sony vaio with blue ray , better gpu, 6gb ram, high ghz core i5, 500 gb 7200 rpm hard drive all for $1400. Don't get me wrong I love Mac I have had windows since dos and when my friend switched me to apple a few years back(who eats drinks apple, Jobs can do no wrong type of person). I never want to go back, but I just think I'm being taken advantage of and It makes it seem like I don't know any better because how much I pay and for what I get, not only to others, but myself.

Ok, take a deep breath... breath in....breath out.... everything is going to be OK.
