I don't see this happening.

120 GB HDD when the BlackBook has 160? Rrrrrrright.

Agreed. That's not happening.

Only a .04 GHz upgrade? No Santa Rosa on the base?

Those are the Santa Rosa specs (2.2GHz is an SR speed). .04 GHz is the biggest speed upgrade SR offers.

I guess LED screens could make up for a new, non-Santa Rosa low-end MBP. But the hard drive can't be below the BlackBook.

I can't really see them releasing some MBP's with SR and some without. I think they'll all be SR, and the 15's will get LED.

What I don't get though, is why they don't use 800Mhz RAM? Is it just too expensive? (Apple never seemed to have a problem with that in the past ;) )

Look around. Where exactly do you see 800MHz DDR2 ram? =p

It's not for sale to the public at all right now. No other computer manufacturers are including 800MHz ram in their Santa Rosa laptops either.

No Santa Rosa widespread = no reason for RAM manufacturers to make 800MHz so-dimms. Hence the chipset must be widespread before the RAM is made available for it.

Only Steve and a select few know what is really going into the laptop, and I don't think they wanted to risk their jobs telling everyone about it...
So we don't know anything other then its probably coming out tomorrow.

But it HAS to differ a lot more from the Macbook then it currently does:p

"Prices range from $2000 for the 15" low end up to $3050 for the "ultimate" 17" model, which may be a retail store specific configuration."

whats that mean?

Well, I honestly am not too worried about what the update includes. I have been waiting for this update all year. I am going to be purchasing the upper-end 15" model tomorrow morning right after the Apple Store opens back up.

I will be somewhat disappointed if these specs are true, it seems like they would increase the RAM by at least 512MB for the upper-end 15" to set it apart from the lower-end 15" MBP. However, like I said, as long as they update them, I am buying one tomorrow!

It means that only 2 prices are known, the cheapest 15, and most expensive 17. (not including BTO)

The CPU clock speeds are insignificantly different.

The Fastest Chips out right now are the 2.4Ghz Meroms w/ 800MHz FSB.

The Santa Rosa Platform uses a 800MHz FSB however still utilizes 667MHz DDR-2 Ram in Dual Channel Mode, vice Interleaving on the Napa Platform. Also 4GB is the Maximum Ram on this chipset.

The Santa Rosa Chipset Intel 965GM has a significantly faster and lower latency memory controller, more flexible PCI-Express, and newer Intel Controller Hub for Storage.

I feel that if these specs as originally posted are true, this will be a significant upgrade.

modest speed upgrades... hey, at least we can still feel all warm and fuzzy remembering the days of PPC speed boosts

The nvidia chips are significantly faster.

Should be close to double the performance of the x1600.

I was under the impression that the two cards where essentially similar in performance. Also that while power consumption was down significantly from previous generations, performance gains where minimal. Is there some site which compares the two or is it still too early to judge?

I was wondering this myself... I don't know much about which GPU's are what. How good are these GPU's, anyone know?

hmm...

<rant> to me it seems like they're skimping. they could have gone with an 800Mhz FSB no sweat. Also, i expect to see LED backlit displays otherwise they are really not living up to the competition as seen on Page 1 with the Dell machine.

Maybe they're saving their sparkles and surprises for an ultraportable at WWDC? or something like it? would make sense to keep some base hardware the same to shift a few in the back to school season.

</rant>

I just want there to be a 13.3 in MBP to come out with the next round of updates.

I have a 12in iBook that i carry around right now and it is great for portability. I think the 15.4 inch is a little to big to carry around all the time.

How many times do we have to say it....if this information is true...then we will have SR and it WILL have an 800MHz FSB! The memory is clocked at 667MHz. Feel free to upgrade the RAM to 800MHz.

I cant see why Apple would need to offer a 13.3 MBP as the only spec they could include is a dedicated graphics card. Maybe a Matte screen?

BlackBook £949

13" MBP £1139

15" MBP £1349

The only way I see this truely happening is if they drop the Blackbook's higher spec.

so

Macbook £829

13" MBP £1139

15" MBP £1349

EDIT: just to make it clear, the 13" MBP would follow the design of the other MBP's (keyboard etc), LED displays and other tidbits rumored.

120 GB Hard drive for a $2000 Mac? Definitely not happening.

As for the GPU (video card), how good is it for games?

If not offered as an option, I'd buy the smaller HD, get one of the new WD 250GB PMR drives and swap it out myself.

If it is indeed an Nvidia 8 series, should be no less than twice anything the x1600 is capable of.

I agree on the HD front. 160gb standard. BTO: up to 250gb 5400rpm.

Exactly - me too. 250gb goodness:)

Who cares about MBPs? We need more iPhone rumors.

I predict that no matter what Apple releases, multiple threads complaining about the specs will appear.

Agreed!..unless of course there is that MBP 12 or 13.3 in that has the same spec's as the rumored Dell ultra thin

However, let me be the 1st to start the complaint thread about the iGasm tar, bring back the damn drooling sexy panties tar!

Exactly - me too. 250gb goodness:)

Hitachi's 200GB 7.2k rpm drive is faster goodness.

Sandisk or Samsung's 64GB (in particular the Samsung is a 1.8in so 2 of them could be run RAID0, for some wicked, wicked fast 'goodness' in a MBP 17in.
