I thought this was interesting from the Wikipedia link:

Intel will also implement Dynamic Acceleration Technology with the Santa Rosa platform. This technology allows single threaded applications to execute faster. When a single threaded application is running the CPU can turn off one of the CPU cores and overclock the active core. In this way the CPU maintains the same Thermal Profile as it would when both cores are active. Many expect Santa Rosa to perform well as a mobile gaming platform due to its ability to switch between single threaded and multithreaded tasks.

That's good news.

Hold your horses Hoss, it's my understanding that you can't put a faster merom chip in the current motherboard. For 2.4 and 2.6 you'll need Santa Rosa. That, plus (hopefully) LED screens = good upgrade.

Thats fine but haven't all the rumors suggested that the new LED displays will only be 13" or 15" maximum?
If that's the case then this is another minor upgrade at best.
Any thoughts on a new form factor?
I have the latest 17"C2D and I would only upgrade if there was a new LED display.....I think ;)

I really dont know whats so hard to understand about this.

Just because the FSB is 800MHz, dosent meant the Ram has to be the same speed.

DDR2 667MHz SO-DIMM Modules are in mass production, and are very cheap to produce compared to DDR2 800MHz SO-DIMM modules which are scarce, produce more heat, and are more expensive.

DDR2 667 is the standard for laptops, its not a big deal. The Cooler running modules, and less $ will bennifit you more.

Firstly i never said the ram does have to be at the same speed and secondly......

Who are you to tell me what my needs or wallet limit is? Wind your neck in!

I don't think he was implying that you couldn't afford buyt that the speed difference except in very specific circumstances doesn't come close to justifying the extra cash you would spend.

Yes but who was to say i wasn't thinking of the upgrade a yr down the line when its cheap as chips?

Yeah, if you're looking at the 17. . . then this rumored upgrade might not be that big of a deal. Then again, you never know. We'll just have to wait a few hours and find out!!!

Wind your neck in? I'm not trying to start anything, seriously, but can you explain that colloquialism? It just sounds kinda strange to my silly American ears. ;)

I can't really see them releasing some MBP's with SR and some without. I think they'll all be SR, and the 15's will get LED.

Well the 15" MBP was released first was it not (when transitioning to Intel), so maybe it'll be the guinea pig again.

But it HAS to differ a lot more from the Macbook then it currently does:p

Not necessarily, remember the Santa Rosa chipset will be re-used with the next shrink of processors, and they should bring much bigger improvements, so perhaps this upgrade will suck a bit, but the one after will be really good.

(Referring to the 45nm shrink)

Also 4GB is the Maximum Ram on this chipset.

Thank you, was wondering what the maximum was... not that 2x 2GB chips is affordable in any case.

The MacBook Pro will also have a new power adapter.
What the hell? Where did that come from? .

He came back from the future to tell us about the MBP, but got to the wrong point in time, he should of gone back another year and a few months...

I was expecting Leopard to come out with it too?

It was delayed until October... you can have it though, it'll just be buggy and you might lose all your data, is that alright with you ?

I am so patiently waiting to see how the new mcbook pro's turn out.
But I have a feeling apple will not look the other way and just release
something very un-spectacular. But their marketing team and the hype behind apple products will intially make it out to be this awesome upgrade
thus blinding us into a pathetic overall upgrade.
By the way the new dell tops any current apple offering in the notebook genre.
Hopefully apple takes note of it and do something amazing with their so desperetaly needed upgraded mobile stations.

ahh, so that explains why Steve has delayed a few things... all the stuff he comes up with... poof! gone! starts again... and so the cycle continues

Yeah, I hear ya, however I will be getting 4GB, So I can max it out and be done with it... this way, when leopard comes out, I know already have the fastest Mac I can have to run it on, and hopefully it will prolong the useability of the computer.
