Do independant resellers have any idea when the refresh is coming? Are they in the same boat as us? Since they know it's due anytime soon-ish are they just trying to lower stock levels so they don't end up with a lot of old ones?

It's getting dull around here. Someone photoshop a nice mockup so we can all have a w**k over it or something... ;)

I would think that any Apple authorised reseller will have to sign a contract with Apple which probably includes a Non disclosure agreement which probably means that even if they do have prior knowledge of new products if they ever leaked any info then Apple would stop supplying them with stock.

Apple are quite aggresive in these things. The BBC have a Technology tv programme called Click, which did a program about Apple, looking at the PR and marketing and how Apple choreograph their products launches etc. They also spoke to ex Apple employees and authors who had written books about Apple. It was quite intersting but nothing controversial, at the end of the show the presenter said that they had approached apple for an interview, Apple declined to take part but told them that if they broadcast the program it could have a "negative effect" on the BBCs relationship with Apple. Not sure what the "negative effect" was but the BBC broadcast it anyway.

Apple is super sneaky with things like these.

The product is shipped in unmarked boxes to retailers and only a few people know what it is. They just have a date on it and the boxes simply say, "Do not sell/open before XXX."

Same goes for many video games.

When i use to work at an electronics retailer it became very easy to figure out what was an apple product because video games info usually leaks ahead of time.

But Apple's even gotten smarter. Now they release a product and give a later sale date. For example, the iPad. Was released a month ago but is available on April 3rd.

Bullet bitten

Ok, I finally covered my bets and ordered a refurb MBP. Couldn't resist the $500 off on a 15", 2.8, 256g SSD, antiglare screen. No, still not cheap, but I use my laptop (a 4-year-old PBG4) several hours a day, every day, so it's worth it to me. And since I got my first Mac in 1984, and used 'em ever since, I'm sure as hell not about to buy a Windows box now.

Here's the plan. You have 14 days, from the time of delivery, to initiate a return. If the new MBP's haven't showed up by then, I'll go ahead and start the return process. I'll then have another 14 days to actually ship the unit back. So basically, I've got 28 days from the time I receive the refurb to decide if I want to keep the 'obsolete' MBP.

So, if the new MBP's show up within the next month, and I have to have one, I'll just return the refurb. If the new refreshed model isn't something that I can't live without, cool, I've ensured that I have pretty much the best of last year's model.

The one caveat: Apple charges a 10% restocking fee if the computer has been taken out of the box. Any idea how difficult it's gonna be to not play with the new toy when it shows up?

Do you have to pay for shipping it back or does Apple cover that?

Good idea! However, why would you buy it if you don't plan on opening the box? Maybe you should just wait for the refresh if you're not going to use the one you buy now..

oh no! It's close but I spend almost all my saving for a st$#@% acer lappy, isn't worth it. I regret buying one. I just hope I can earn and save for this one before it actually launches.

The whole idea is to get my choice of old or new (that's assuming the refresh happens within 28 days of my receipt of the refurb, of course). If the new one is irresistible I send the refurb back. But there's no way of knowing if the SSD 15" will still be available after the refresh happens, so I've just kept my options open.

Of course, I'm hosed if the refresh happens after my 28-day window, and the new MBP turns out to be the coolest thing since sliced bread. But the very worst that could happen is that I'm stuck with a very capable last year's computer.

I feel you man. I did basically the same thing, except instead of ordering a refurb I just went to the apple store and bought one new...I was so impatient that I couldn't even wait for shipping. I essentially have a month this way too because I've heard from many people including the clerk who rang me up that generally if an update comes out the exchange time is unofficially extended to around 4 weeks.

If June/July is really the release time, though, I'm sure I'll have no problem selling this thing before then. I'm going to keep it in mint condition and hopefully won't lose any money this way. God it feels good to have an MBP though...the wait was killing me.

Even if the new model out-performs most of the rumors, it's still not going to be THAT dramatically different from the currently shipping ones. I personally would take the route of putting in my own SSD (the Intel X-25M beats the crap out of everything else, even still today, although the gap has narrowed) and throwing my stock HD in an external enclosure, but to each his own.

If I were you and I'd already ordered, I wouldn't worry. Just enjoy the machine. It's not like the new revision will let you "do something" that the old ones won't. I think you're in good shape.

im new here and i've been following this the MBP thread for about 3 months now..

APPLE STORE DOWN!

Has to be something iPad related... no way we're getting an MBP update less than a week out from the iPad release... sad but true...

probably app related, or else a software update... any guesses how long til we're back up?

Your back up plan is a good idea. I want to get a mbp and I'm not sure if I should get it from best buy or apple; I heard that best buy has accidental coverage in their warranty..hmm

I know there's a good chance my hopes will be dashed once it goes back up but I'm just so damn excited!

I'm amending my previous guess as to it being iPad related... it might be the new MacPro since the hexacore chips were announced last week and everyone expected a contemporaneous MacPro release...

I'd say the odds are best for iPad, a distant second for MacPro, and probably next to nil for an MBP... would love to be wrong though...it's been known to happen ;)

I don't think it's an iPad thing. They still have almost a full week before the release; what would they be throwing up on the store now. I say it's either MacPro or MBP. Either way it's more exciting than the dumb ass iPad :p.

tried to check out australia, germany, and brazil... all down... anyone know if the usual practice is to shut the store down globally even if it is a minor update of a product of limited release? I think most expect that a new system refresh would likely be a North America release first... although it could be a global update and release dates are just delayed... I don't know... just spinning my wheels trying to make sense of it all and wishing I hadn't read that last post that the store was down before crawling into bed... curiosity is a sleep killer.

Be awesome if they changed the iPad to have a camera or something crazy like that... kind of a last minute "f off" to all the critics... could it be OS 4.0?

Still would rather a new mbp than the pad...
