You know the sad thing is that when it finally does come out, I'll be afraid to buy it for some time thinking; "I don't want to be the first, let them work the bugs out". So I'll sit around for a couple months waiting until my ignorant rear end thinks "Ok, now it's safe".

haha I suppose I'm glad to be so desperate for a new MacBook that I'll get an update irrespective. Although I'm not desperate enough to buy a C2D

iPad vs. MBP or MacBook

Not totally the forum to be fighting for or against the iPad, but I agree that it is NOT designed to be a laptop killer. As I've argued for years, the VAST MAJORITY of computer users are NOT tech people, and are not even interested in the specs of their machines. They want a convienent way to check email, surf the web, do some social networking apps, maybe play a basic game and watch a movie. Compared to a netbook or a cheap (ie out of date) laptop, the iPad WILL be a game changer for that market. We needed another mobile machine in the house for email/web, etc, and I didn't want to spend the money on a 2nd MacBook or wait for a MBP. I ALMOST purchased a netbook but am VERY glad I didn't. We took a flyer on an iPad and couldn't be happier. For sitting on the couch and having access to the web while watching TV, this thing can't be beat. For riding on a plane or a car ride, this thing can't be beat.

I still want a new MBP and will probably buy one. But when will people learn that Netbooks and iPad's are not designed to be REAL computers? They are mass market machines, and so far iPad looks like a winner to me.

Actually they are real computers. They have more power than a desktop did 10 years ago. They are extremely functional for doing 99% of what 90% of the population does with computers. You don't need a dual core cpu to browse the internet and send emails.

Yeah, you got me there. It puts my very first Dell PC I purchased 12 years ago to shame, and outperforms my G5 iMac in most ways as well. But my wife doesn't refer to it as a computer, like she does with the MacBook we have. I bet a LOT of folks who end up buying this thing (maybe not the opening day crowd like myself and the folks in this forum) won't either. Heck, my wife has started calling it "the PADD" as in the handheld device from Star Trek.

It's all a perception thing.

What makes it fall in the "not a real computer" for me personally (like I said, it really is a real computer for most people, but for my personal purposes it's not, and I'm sure that's what you meant when you said the phrase) is two things. 1) Its inability to install applications and manipulate the computer in any way outside the confines of the standard UI and app store applications. and 2) Its lack of multi-tasking. I made fun of windows NT for years for it's crappy multi-tasking capabilities. I'm not fond of the idea of going backward from there even.

For me, if I buy a computer, I want to be able to install whatever applications on it that I want to without getting someone else's permission first.

I own an iPhone because it's the best there is out there at the moment, but an iPad? I have no need for it whatsoever. I'd rather have a combo of the iPhone and a MBP instead.

Personally, I agree with you. The new iPhone OS release coming up promises to support some sort of multitasking, which will go a long way towards making the iPad more useful for my needs. And I've always been frustrated with Apples resistance to most things not Apple. Heck, I've got to run Windows 7 on my MacBook so I can access my business and military systems! Course, that isn't Apple's fault per say but rather my employers.

I just don't think the iPad is being targeted at "real" computer users.

But we are getting off subject. So, back to matters at hand: I WANT A NEW MBP NOW!!!

Not from our definition of "real" computer users. But from the broad definition (where the money comes from) of "real" computer users, it meets their needs just fine.

I have a 2.5 yr old MBP that's working just perfectly, and I have no real need for a new computer. But I'm dying for a new 17" MBP. Can't wait until the new version is released.

I am waitting but from a defarante point of view
I can't pay full price $2500 for an 3 years old technolagy.

Do we care about Best Buy's website here? They changed their label on the Airs and 15/17" MBPs from "backordered" to "not available for shipping." In my NJ zip, none are in stock for pickup. Maybe "not available for shipping," means BB has the new models but they are embargoed until a release date in the future.

I hope there is at least some light shed tomorrow. Even if they said they were available in June, I would feel better knowing, but would have higher expectations than I did in February.

Same thing in Denver. I'm guessing we will know something in the next week. I mean, how long can they let these stores be without products? I suppose they know people will wait.

That's extremely interesting... has anyone ever seen this from Best Buy before? I just checked the listing in my area and every 15" and 17" MBP is marked "Not Available for Shipping," but 1 of the 2 13" MBP's, one MBA and the MB are still marked normally.

I would take notice but frys.com has the top 15 inch MBP available in all stores around San Francisco and San Jose...

Is it possible that as prices remain similar, Fry's and other outlets' inventory systems may not require changing numbers & specs? Just inform customers that have already ordered that they are getting the new better one instead?

I realize that some buyers might then cancel to give the new tech a little time to prove itself, but if I were a big retailer I might gamble that I'd lose fewer orders this way.

Supposedly the MBPs are to be refreshed next Tuesday: http://www.macworld.com.au/news/view/rumour-new-macbook-pros-next-tuesday-4726

if this is correct it should probably leak from other sources soon too.

Well... I don't see how being familiar with product cycles and inventory levels can possibly lead to knowing which models will be updated and what date it will happen....
While we can't reveal the source, this person is familiar with Apple product cycles and inventory levels.

The source said that an update to every MacBook Pro model was expected on Tuesday, 13 April, but was unsure about the MacBook Air.

Sounds like more wishful dreaming to me.

But hey, someday, someones guess, will be right. lol

I just had a dream that I was at my local Apple store for the release of the new line of MBP's. They were beautiful, except for the giant embossed i5 logo next to the Apple logo on the top. Ha! Then, they were running some promo where you play this new iPad game against one of the Genius team members. If you beat him, you got a discount on your purchase. I ended up with a $700 discount.

I think it's safe to say that this wait is making me a little wacko, based on my dream last night.

My friend let me play on his MBP today to do some media work... maaaaan how much do I want one now!
Everything about the user interaction was polished and slick, just the way it should be; sure beats typing on this PC! :(
Really looking forward to the update now - if the user experience on the new MPBs is as good as it was today PLUS having the extra horsepower for my work it will be a dream!

Not sure

I've been waiting for the new MacBook Pro, but the iPad might be a deal-breaker for me. I say might because I see so many complaints about low connectivity. If the alumibody blocks incoming signal strength it would have to be some kind of hardware fix, not just software. Too many of those who say their wi-fi is fine are talking about their own computers, not the iPad. I want to hear only from actual iPad users.
