MacBook Pro Update Due for Launch as Soon as Tomorrow?

The palm rest (which has already been replaced once) is chipping up from the corner. Its also lifting up from the left side next to the CAPS LOCK button. A few keys (shift and the arrows) are getting mushy. The screen bezel is coming off from the right side. The top of it is chipping off as well.

There are also hairline cracks where the heat is released. Finally the bottom of the thing is heat discolored very dark.

My wife has a new unibody Macbook and the build construction is so much better than my old whitebook.

My sister's Macbook has the same common problem. She had it fixed but it broke again.

HOWEVER, recently Apple has changed their tune on this. She brought it in to the local Apple Store (not reseller) and within a 2 hour window they changed almost every piece of plastic. The display surround, wrist pads, the mouse pad and even the KEYBOARD. The computer now feels and looks brand new. Hers is the 2nd generation and did not have Apple Care.

And, it was done for FREE.

Well worth the effort to take it in.

I just ordered the new 2TB Western Digital, it says it is for PC only, as it is formatted for NTSF, but it'll work on my MPB, right? Even if I have to re-format it?

once ipad is launched, millions will buy or check it out online. At the same time, if apple has updated the pros and airs, consumers may also choose to purchase them online.

Apple wants to attract new customers all the time, it will be disappointing to see the line of mac products along with their price if nothing is updated before the ipad launch.

Don't worry about the formatting, it's just a hard drive, they're all standard.

Since you said it was 2TB, that means it's not a 2.5" internal drive for a laptop, so it's either a 3.5" bare drive or a 3.5" inside an external case. If it's a 3.5" bare drive it will not fit in your MacBook, you need a 2.5 and I believe the biggest ones are 640GB @ 5400rpm. If it is an external, just plug it in, open /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility, select the new drive from the list on the left, select the "Erase" tab at the top, and "erase" it as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)"

Regarding the new MacBooks... I think one of the more important aspects of the new processors is that they support USB 3.0, so without any historical speculation I would assume that USB 3.0 would be included in the next update -- USB 2.0 would seem rather silly, since I bet the bus would have to be wired in some sort of "legacy" mode that would be pointless (probably comperably complex to implement) besides the additional expense of 3.0 ports etc.

I know for me that the show-stopper on buying a current MBP is the hope for USB 3.0 and a faster discrete GPU in the future.

I am stuck with a 13" MBP and a 15" 2.53 GHz unibody (first one, with the Express Card slot and faulty graphics card). I really, really want a 13-15" anti-glare screen and some serious battery. My current '7 hours' battery lasts less than three.


And no more fan noise or high-pitched CPU-whine, please!

My guess is New MBP's won't be released until atleast a week or two after the iPad.

I'm totally with you. Apple is launching a totally new product line. This is very important for them. If you look at the main page at Apple.com you see the iPad. Apple doesn't want any distractions from that until after the iPad launches.

So I guess the earliest would be April 13.

Here is another thought. The back-to-school promotions usually start at the end of May. By then the first wave of iPad excitement could be waning. Perhaps the $199 credit you get for buying a laptop this summer could be applied to the purhase of an iPad. Buy a laptop and get an iPad for just $300. Not a bad deal.

The other thing to consider is that Intel is rumored to be brining out a lower power version of Arrandale sometime in the middle of this year. Maybe it is better to wait for that one?

I currently have a 2.4 ghz Macbook CE and I have not seen apple add anything to the macbook Pros to sell up and get a new one......yet.

Im more interested in the next macmini as the last one I had was a 1.66 core duo.

Ok, so here is what I think is happening. The release of MBP may happen before the iPad because Apple want to have customers buy both the iPad and the MBP. On the other hand, the release of a brand new product (iPad) is critical for them and they need to pull everything into it. That's why they choose not releasing MBP untill AFTER the iPad in fear of killing the interest of it.


So my conclusion is that it's either happening this tuesday or never...

and by never I mean many weeks after the iPad launch, far out in april

Are you kidding? They're already running out of the pre-orders. Demand is clearly outstripping supply for the iPads and they're not even released yet.

I do think, though, that releasing some new MBPs and MPs would be a nice way to assuage the disgruntled pre-orderers of the iPad when they get told they can't pre-order.

But why would they state something like that and possibly limit their sales, when all they have to say is it can be formatted to whatever system you have?

Has anyone noticed that the refurb section at the Apple Online Store is completely out of stock of all 15" and 13" Macbook Pros? I can't remember this being the case recently and it makes me wonder if this is related to a possible new release of those size configurations. There are multiple configs of the 17" MBP available.

This has been brought up a lot, and the consensus seems to be that refurb inventory doesn't correlate at all with an impending release.

I'm guessing because of the software CD, which will only run on PCs. But yeah, I agree, it would be smarter to just put one Mac-compatible app on the CD and then market it for both systems.

Honestly? I think the ENTIRE desktop line (iMac, Mac Mini, etc.) would probably get this before a laptop would get it.

Well the iMac has already got an i5 and i7. The Mac Mini used notebook components, so it may be updated when the portabes get updated. As fore the Mac Pro, it is rumored to be updated this Tuesday, although, it really could be someday with in 4 months.

I went over a store lately where they sell macs and other stuff like fridges , phones , televisions , pc's , ...
In that store I was interested in the 17" mbp and the salesman said it was the last one they had and they gave a discount of €200 because they couldn't order a new one.
Then I made the hard choice of waiting till the new one comes out.
So only buy when you really need it.
