MacBook Pro Updates Still to Come, But What Can We Expect?

Hard Drives

Numerous messages say they would only buy a current Mac if only they had a 500 GB HD or whatever. The magic of SSD is speed not capacity, yet. Get a couple of USB sticks at 64 GB each if you need it, or an external HDD of 1-2 TB which is USB3 bus powered. The SSD's are now 128/256 GB minimum which is larger than even HDD's from one generation ago! You are getting more than you deserve or expect, but are whining because it's not even more!

The new thing is a "sufficient" SSD, unlimited cloud storage, and massive, unprecedented capacity and speed and power, external storage. Get on board!

its more interesting to see Apple focusing on iOS camera upgrades then the laptop iSight camera upgrades ..... And now we see a "potential" 2.0 megapixel..

Only a slight increase, since we're suck at about 1.8 currently.

If this was ever on a iOS device now days. everyone would be complaining like hell. Regardless if its 720p.

Obviously there must be an update, but if the camera is is good anyway in current Macs, then why even bother updating the camera ? Obviously my homework in this area is way off, but why does iPhone get all the attention and glory, just because more people prefer "on-the-go" ? WHy did it take this long ?

I can't even think there ever was a camera update on Macbook Pro's were there?

12 hour on a Macbook pro would be good, and since most have no optical drive anymore, except the one still left on the Apple site, we're heading that way anyway....... so remove it, and slim the current one down

You gotta break eggs somewhere.

yep... the whole Mac line go Haswell :) thats my view.....

..... Up next: a better post than mine ....

Anybody think the MacBook Pros either this summer or eventually will receive the same black aluminum look as the Mac Pro?

I personally think it would look really cool! Don't get me wrong, the current design is beautiful and timeless, but I'd still be excited to see something new!

A black version would be cool. They used to have black MacBooks, and those were the thing to have.

----------

Sad how this is more exciting than Trashcan Pro.

No it's not.

They need to fix that the computer goes into hibernation mode after 4 hrs of sleep (when plugged in) -- it takes a few minutes to start up from this, plus when unplugging the power from the machine, the hard drive starts up making it somewhat dangerous to lug around if the drive is spinning...

Yeah this is totally stupid.

Luckily it's easy to change just set the hibernation interval to 24 or 48 hours, instead of the standard (4? I thought it was 1).

Do this:
Code:
sudo pmset -a standbydelay 86400

86400 seconds = 24 hours.

----------

So there are some things that do not make any sense. Let me lay them out for you:

First of all, what would be the real reason for Apple to delay the release of the new Pro machines? ....

I think the real reason is: They're not ready.

That's all. Apple doesn't ship to deadlines, they ship products when they're ready to ship. So the new rMBPs weren't yet ready for whatever reason, and they will ship as soon as they are. I am sure they're working hard on it. A lot of different parts go into a rMBP so - not too surprising.

My own rMBP is plagued by issues - this is a big step back from the previous unibody MBP as far as quality is concerned. The retina display has loads of problems - stuck pixels, clouding, etc. I've replaced it once already but I have friends who have replaced it up to 9 times. Yep - 9.

And now my graphics card has died. I am still running on integrated but I am kind of dreading having to have the thing replaced yet again.

So if I'd had to guess, I'd guess is that they are re-engineering some of the components to up the quality to a level more in line what we expect from Apple.

The only issue I had with my 15" Retina was the image retention. I had the display swapped out for a Samsung one and now its okay. I thought I had a usb port issue but realized it was my portable hard drive that was the issue.

Since I sold my 27 IMac, I am constantly using my Macbook retina with a LG display, the warranty on the machine has expired and I have not noticed any image retention. However I got my wallpaper set on slideshow to change every 5sec.

Do you think if i leave the one desktop image it at risk of burning onto the screen i do have my harddrive icon and external drive icon on the desktop and they have not burned in, those this mean i am safe.

I also noticed that my Macbook freezes now and than and the only way to revive it is with a force poweroff should i be concerned.

How does making it black make it attract more dust?

Look at the the black iPad bezel, and tell me it doesn't gather dust...

Its easier to spot on black than while. This why the only reason (apart from finger prints) Apple sill includes a cloth with their products.

So there are some things that do not make any sense. Let me lay them out for you:

First of all, what would be the real reason for Apple to delay the release of the new Pro machines? This is the really interesting question here. The aforementioned reasons can not be the whole story behind this.

I'd like to point out a few additional reasons why Apple delayed the launch. All of the listed features [which were mentioned in the news post] could have been released at WWDC.

1. IGZO displays. These things just faded a little bit in the background rumor-wise - at first glance.
But wait a second: A reason why the release has been delayed is the low supply of display panels (see news post).
Apple has problems with getting the LCD technology which they had time to produce for more than a year now? That simply does not make any sense at all.
What makes considerably more sense is, that Apple will switch to IGZO Displays because they offer superiour quality and incredibly lower power consumption -> providing more battery life and allowing the 13" MBP to become thinner.
The 15.4" displays with IGZO technology are in production by Sharp for just a few weeks. I'd call this a bottleneck right now. It fits very well in the prediction by KGI.

2. Thunderbolt 2: Apple just gave a sneak peak of what they have been working on in terms of Mac Pro. One feature was very apparent: Support for 4K displays.
As of right now, the Retina MacBook Pros only support Thunderbolt 1, which does not offer the throughput which 4K displays require.
Thunderbolt 2 on the other hand will provide just that.
So, let me ask you: What would be the point in introducing a new Mac Pro with support for 4K displays and later on introducing a MacBook Pro without support for this technology? Apple would be foolish not to include this technology [Thunderbolt 2] in the new Retina MacBook Pro!
This is because Apple will very likely introduce a 4K cinema display as soon as the new MacPro goes on sale.
To provide such a display at a sufficient price Apple needs the effect of Economies of Scale.
Therefore they need as many potential customers for such a display as they can. The new Retina MacBook Pro has to incorporate 4K support with Thunderbolt 2 to do so! The downside: Thunderbolt 2 will not be ready until fall but Apple has to incorporate this tech due to the reasons I just mentioned. Before you ask: Yes, the new Retina MacBook Pro GPUs will offer support for 4K displays; in fact, if you bump up the current rMBP to the highest resulution (1920x1080) it already renders nearly 4K resolution (1920x1080 times two in every direction). So GPU-wise it is already possible, but the connector is not ready yet -> delay.

These are my two top reasons for the delay. Hit the like button if you agree. Flame away if you don't.

I don't think we will see IGZO displays until next year and regarding TB2.. couldn't that be easily put in a silent upgrade alongside the Mac Pros?

What does Apple plan to sell during the BTS period? Just Airs?

Regardless of when the haswell processors come out, Apple cannot release new computers during the back to school sale. Last year the sale went from June 11th to September 21st. So either apple will delay the beginning of the sale, extend the length of the sale or shorten the sale to make sure the above case does not occur. They really can't push the sale back too long as then they will miss out on a fair number of purchasers, don't feel they would pull back the end date as they are already 10 days behind when the sale started last year. Not sure what they will do about this.

From what I have gathered, in ALL of the BTS sales they have done, the longest they waited to do it was June 16th, which was a long time ago so if we don't see it soon that must mean they are waiting to announce he new MacBook Pro Retinas to do the sale.

I'm gonna add to this. 4K is not in use yet world wide... So just like TB, its not gonna be used on the mass-market...

Only those that need it, and have 4K displays, which arn;'t that many, not to mention content wise.

Apple is sure looking to the future for this, but before it gets there, several new Mac Pros will be out anyway, with better features, while retaining the 4k, so you may as well wait till then if 4K is important.

Plus, 4K will be make more sense..

Its too early now..

Maverics and TB2 have absolutely nothing to do with this delay.

It should be painfully obvious to everyone that the delay is due to the staggered release of the mobile Haswell chips.

If Intel had released the whole lineup this month I can almost guarantee Apple would have announced the update to rMBP at WWDC. It is just not feasible that they would have waited 5 or 6 months for TB2. The Haswell refresh (Q2 '14) won't be far off by then!

The rest of the Haswell lineup will be released in Q3 so we will almost certainly see an update to the rMBP in July - September.

That leaves it must be announced in July. Waiting for August and September would be too far away because of the BTS promo.

There are lots of rumors floating around. 99% of them are bunk.

The Sandy Bridge MBA had the exact same 7 hour battery life rating as the Sandy Bridge 13 rMBP so seem to me the rumor you heard bears no truth. I'd even go so far to say the rMBP could have an even longer battery life if Apple doesn't make it thinner and lighter, but of course they probably will because that is their thing.

Hence this website is called Macrumors not Mactruth

Don't worry about your screen. As for the freezing mine does that too but it doesn't happen often. Its very rare but it does happen.

I would really love a 13.1 or 13.9 model. 15.1 just seems too big for me. its going to be used for programming only so no need for a huge screen

The only reason apple didnt announce updated mbp and state that it will be shipping towards the end of the summer is because that would kill sales of the current mbp.

Was so hoping for the new rMBPs to be released. 1st July is tax time in Australia so I could have been able to claim it this financial year - sigh. Been waiting for over a year, given the last ones weren't so worth it.

The way I see it:
- Back-to-School promo begins within the next 2 weeks
- iMac and Mac Mini get updated simultaneously in early-to-mid July
- Retina MacBook Pro line gets updated in late July or, more likely, early-to-mid August (though possible it gets updated along side the iMac and Mac Mini, not sure)
- iPhone and iPad get their own event as usual in the Fall

EDIT: Actually, as everyone's saying, totally dependent on Thunderbolt 2.0, not sure when it launches.

TB 2 is one element but you also need the right processor ships which aren't in mass production yet. It might be the end of September before everything falls in place. Not to mention rumors of new screen technology. Plus I can see a new motherboard coming to address the current Mac Pros short comings. Specifically another SSD slot.

As it is the new AIRs are nothing to sneeze at. They are in fact very impressive machines. Apple will likely try to strive to separate the hardware a bit by focusing even more on performance in the MBPs.
