So I think you should get the 17" MBP and the Dell 24" 2007 wfp for around $700 when it's on sale. Why? Well when you look closely, the 17" only weighs 1.2 pounds more than the 15" and dimensions are only 1.3 inches wider and .8 inches deeper than the 15" model - hardly a burden to any desk's footprint. Plus it's only $300 or 13% more for a lot more features like a 3rd USB2 port, FW 800, the best graphics offered and the much higher resolution 1680x1050 screen - +400 x +196 more than what I have now.
I'm thinking of the MacBook Pro as a C2D Desktop that I can take with me sometimes when I need to go mobile. Also at the University, you will stand out as they gal-guy with the latest greatest and biggest state-of-the-art mobile Mac out there. So there's always the Macho factor - even if you are a woman.
I'm getting all worked up over tommorow being the day. The anticipation is really getting to me.

From what I know, although they pre-announced them several weeks ago, Dell Core Duos actually started shipping on Sept. 12. That's just 6 days ago, not 3+ weeks ago. When announced (maybe tomorrow), the MBPs will be shipping immediately. So, that would be about a 1 week gap, the same as Apple's delay in launching the CD MBPs (probably to clear as much inventory as possible, and to not overlap with the introduction with last week's iTunes/iPod announcements).ready2switch said:Let's hope there's more to the MBP upgrade than just a merom drop-in. If that's all that is coming then it should have been out 3+ weeks ago just like every other company, especially considering that my husband's new core 2 duo Dell laptop is scheduled to be delivered on Wednesday.
aly said:Last time I looked the stock 2.16GHz 15" MBP was £1445 if I remember right. On the normal education store its £1563, so another £118 off, which ain't bad. About 7.5% discount on the normal edu discount. I can't remember other prices so can't confirm its 7.5% on all items.

At least in the US, I get roughly 20% off (the pre-configured MBP's go for $1,599 $1,999 and $2,239 respectively, as opposed to $1,999 $2,499 and $2,799).
Note that this is a one-time purchase... once you do it, you will never get this discount again (unless you upgrade your membership).

It's less about that and more about clearing the channels of old stock. But it is true that Apple does not like to share the limelight, and usually doesn't make announcements on the same day as another company.ready2switch said:While I'm sure all of that is true and logical, PC buyers have been able to see exactly what they're getting for at least 3 weeks. Apple is stretching out the anticipation just for the satisfaction of saying "now shipping"? Seems a bit anticlimactic for a simple processor upgrade. I won't be the only one disappointed if that's all we get.
ChickenSwartz said:As far as the discounts go, I believe you don't get a discount on AppleCare with ADC but you do with student discount $349 vs. $239, add in the cost of the student membership-- $99 and everything comes out to be about the same, if you are going to get AppleCare.
Machead III said:Well I hope Apple keeps with the ethos of having the same processor in both the MB and MBP lines. It's worked extremely well and aside from the so-called "shortages" of Merom chips (which hasn't stopped every major manufacturer already announcing and in many cases shipping desktops, laptops and bloody tablets for both consumer and pro already) I don't see any reason why Apple should undo a good idea.
HecubusPro said:After looking at the new iMac line-up again, I kind of don't see a reason why Apple wouldn't put C2D in MBP's as well as MB's at the same time. Put 2.0GHz and 2.16GHz in the MB's and 2.16GHz and 2.33GHz in the MBP.
Yeah, I see this as a distinct possibility. Keep your hope up.
