these "Should I buy or wait?" threads will never stop, considering there are already threads for people waiting for intel's next platform, Santa Rosa which will enable merom to run at 800mhz on the fsb instead of 667 and lots of other cool stuff. Soon before that is released people will be talking about penryn, the shrinking of the merom from 65 nm to 45nm. What i believe is why wait for santa rosa after the merom release? Just buy the damn thing. Because if you plan on waiting again you'll probably never buy a macbook pro because you'll be too busy watching and waiting for technology advance. I just hope we will have merom macbook pros buy the 25th or possibly the 19th.The only thing that would hold me back from buying the merom macbook pro would be if it doesn't support 4gb of ram. I would wait for santa rosa if that's the case.

Indeed, always more cool stuff. Every six months or so something new, better, faster, cheaper will be out.

Six months from now, Santa Rosa, maybe a year from now, Penryn, six months after that, something else...

Penryn's probably going to make more of a difference than Santa Rosa, since it'll get clock-speed bumps as well as using less power and being cooler. Of course, being maybe a year further on, it should be....

The only part of Santa Rosa that intrigues me is Robson. It has some real potential for speed/battery life increases. Vista offers something that sounds similar, using regular thumb drives, but that'll be once it's booted. Robson should be able to aid the OS booting time too -- altho' I seem to reboot laptops less than once a month anyway...

Same thing here, robson sounds like it will be the only big change. I will probably hold off until we here more on robson. if its not a drastic change i'll just by the merom mbp. I sure won't hold off til penryn though.

Everyone has an opinion about "the next big thing." Whatever, really. Get what you want. Get what works for you. If a yonah system is what you need, even though updates are just around the corner, get it. Who cares what anyone else thinks. We're all just blowing off steam in here anyway. My advice to anyone who wants a pc or a mac... get it, and never come back to this site again. It will make you insane. I should know. :)

Make it simple, Apple

One thing I would like to see with the new MBPs is a simplification of the available stock options. I don't see the point of carrying two 15" models. There should be one 15" and one 17" MBP, each with a la carte options for processor, RAM, video card, HDD, etc. The pricing on the options should be in line with the rest of the industry. It is not so now: e.g., Dell charges <$40 for an 80 MB to 120 MB HDD upgrade, compared with Apple's $200.

The base configurations I would like to see would be:

2.00 GHz C2D (with an option for up to 2.33 GHz C2D)
1 Gb RAM (upgradable to 3-4 Gb)
120 Gb 5400 rpm HDD (with an option for up to 160 Gb 7200 RPM)
256 MB video RAM card (upgradeable to whatever is the high end laptop video card today)

I would hope the base 15" and 17" models would be priced at $1700 and $2200 GB, respectively, with fully loaded machines topping at $2500 & $3000.

Hey Don't Forget 8 Core Clovertown Pairs In Only 3-4 Months From Now on the Mac Pro platform too. There's this thread for that as well. :D

I'm starting to think Tuesday will be the C2D MBP release day.

Sale on MBP?

The MBP 15" currently is on sale on the mac website. Is this usually seen as a sign that they are trying to get rid of it (because of new model about to be released) or just because it is such an old model.

Indeed -- I posted in that thread too!

What I said in here was meant in a mobile context. Having said that, I don't see me buying anything other than a laptop inside the next 12 months...

How many ways are there to find out? ;)

Here's to Tuesday!

It shows the usual price, usually close to double with the exchange rate

On Switching from Quad

Multimedia said:
I sure DON'T. Giving up the Quad for a C2D Mac is like giving up water for vodka. I am one of your fellow Quad bretheren and you have got to be out of your cotten picking mind to sell your Quad. The G5 Quad is probably one of the greatest Macs to ever be offered to the public. No matter what Apple & Intel come up with, I will NEVER sell my Quad G5. It's a keeper in my opinion.

No matter how favorably the 17" C2D MBP compares to the Quad G5 for Aperature performance, and I like you plan on buying the same model, there is always going to be a place in my life for the original unbeatable Quad G5. It is both incredibly reliable and dead silent. The RAM is cheap and I amy even buy another one down the line. At the very least it's a great TV recorder and file compression tool.

I understand you have a heat and power consumption problem. Let's just say, if you decide to sell it, please IM me about that.

Thanks Multimedia, great advice as always; and you're certainly right - the Quad G5 is a real workhorse; an all around great machine.

Nice, could be they are clearing out some old models yea, I've never seen that before, and it's not on the norwegian or US store now. Maybe they are trying to fly it under the radar down under instead of in the US store where everyone would see it immediately and understand that new Macbook Pro's are coming soon! Well, thanks, you just catered my optimism a little, can't wait to put my order in. :)

Hi Everyone this is my first post so go easy on me.
About 12 days ago, wednesday 6th september I went down to my applestore here in Cyprus, determined to buy a new macbookpro. I met the owner/manager of the strore who's a top bloke. I told him I wanted one and whether he had any in stock or whether he'd have to order it in. He gave me a cheeky shake of the head and told me not to bother. "Why, are they crap or something? And anyhow you're meant to be selling not putting me off!" No the reason he assured me was that the new model will be out within a week or so.
I asked him whether it was just a minor speed bump and he told me everything I've lately come to understand as Merom.

There you go, I definitely believe this rumour that we're getting a new MBP... He was a bit out on the date, but for all I know the new MBP's are waiting in his shop right now ( though Cyprus IS the last place on earth to get anything...)

I think apple will come out with atleast an underclocked 7600GT or 7900GT in the MBP, They might surprise us with a 7900GTX, but I think that is highly unlikley. I mean they can't even put in a x1600 in with normal clock speeds.

God! Get it! The X1600 is not underclocked dammit!:p

They run at same speed as any other X1600 in PCs.

I don't believe in nVidia cards for portables. Yes, the 12" PB has GeForce Go5200, but still, the MBP has to reamin 1" thin.;)

Give him extra "coffee money" and get him to sell you one of those sitting there in his shop ahead of time :D

Tomorrow could be the day.

If you go to Amazon.com - several of the MBP configurations are now listed as "unavailable" and when you go to CompUsa.com the MBPs are listed as "sold out."

Here's hoping for tomorrow. Because Wednesday I am buying my MBP regardless. I just can't wait any longer.

Um, did I say it is not possible to get a customized Mac today? Nope. I only said that it makes no sense to have 2 base 15" configurations.
