Santa Rosa Is Not A Big Deal • Breadcrumbs

Hi guys,

Did you realize that when Merom MBP is available out there, everybody will be talking and rumoring about Santa Rosa and so on? This is becoming some of a madness, I think it's a psycological matter...
You must not have read this entire thread. Back at In the evening of September 17th back at Post #314 on Page 13 ergle2 explains how little benefit will be gained with Santa Rosa. Yonah to Merom is the big leap - not Santa Rosa.

Excellent georgi0. Thanks. One the one hand, I hope he's wrong about when. On the other I hope he's right that it will include a total redesign.

Yes. He's totally vaguely commited to the when. :p

Looks like we're in the breadcrumb department now.

After reading through more of these posts, I can see that my wants are actually very little compared to most.
* Yes, I do want C2D. That's mandatory.
* Yes, I want some decent memory - ok, that's mostly up to me to buy. :)
* Yes, I do want a relatively decent graphics card, but as long as it's not shared, I don't care (not a worry on the MBP). You see, I'm coming from a 32mb card in my Powerbook. ANYTHING is better. :D
* I don't care about a magnetic latch or swappable hard drive. Don't get me wrong. It would be nice, but not necessary (for me). I've lived without those possibilities for 5 years (2 years with iBook 600 and 3 years with PB).
* DL superdirve - NICE, but I have yet to use the DL capability on my G5 (had for more than a year)

I'll definitely not be one of the complainers when the new MBP pros are released and "missing" x, y, and z.

My take on what time the MBP will be announced on Monday

Tuesday is the start of Photokina.

I think Apple will host an event in Gemany at 5pm German Time
This will correlate to their normal U.S. Time of Updating the store. They dont want the store to go down right in the middle of the day in the US since Apple Retail Stores use the online store to help customers order things online all the time.
I think they will do there stuff German p.m. , say here is the new MBP and 64bit aperture, watch this week as Aperture flies on MBPs and Mac Pros.

Also.... Microsoft is previewing Vista for photographers. I wouldnt be surprised if Apple shows a little Leopard/Aperture integration at their booth. It sure would be nice to access your aperture library from within Finder.

More importantly, why doesnt MacWorld or anyone like that know what time they are supposed to be at the Media Event??? and if they do why dont they tell us?

I don't think this guy knows what he is talking about.

There is no logical reason to delay putting in Merom.

I think at the beginning of August Jason O'Grady was saying that it would be Nov/Dec for Merom because the chips weren't actually the same size as Yonah. It seems he has abandoned that position. This might have been someone else, if so, I apologize.

They did this during the Showtime event. I was in an Apple store the sales guy was going to look something up. He seemed not to know why the store was down, I thought that was funny.

I'm in the same boat. Question here, any of y'all that were having your MBP's shipped on the 26th now having them delivered on the 25th??? This is just too weird, earlier in the week it was to be shipped on the 26th, now it's to be delivered on the 25th. I will not open it in hopes the the C2D comes out next week, the minute it does I'm taking it to the nearest Apple store to exchange it out for a new MBP!!!

Actually, all US-based Apple presentations start at 10:00 San Francisco time which is 19:00 (or 7pm for the pm/am minded people) CET which is a bit late for a presentation on an event.

I'd say they would present it at a more logical time in Germany which is during the day... The US 'shopkeepers' just have to work overtime or just start a bit earlier :)

I agree with most of your requirements; however I would like the Graphic chip to work at normal speeds instead of being underclocked as it appearantly is. Also, I do miss my FireWire 800 connection. As i do video editting every now-and-then I bought a FW800 drive for storing digital media for editting. FW400 still works but I find FW400 'normal' and not 'Pro'... I have it in my PB 15" and find it silly that it is not present anymore in the MBP 15". Also, a larger (120GB or 160GB?) 7200rpm SATA harddisk would be very much appreciated.

If you look at the competing brands they offer DL drives, pre-n wireless, better graphic chips, etc... I would say a MBP should have at least similar specs you would expect for the amount of money it actually costs (similar or more expensive than brands that do offer these extra functionality).

Also, I think there is too less difference between a MB and a MBP compared to the iBook/PB lines. The main difference would be the allu casing and a better graphics chip... If I buy a Professional laptop I would expect it to be much better than a consumer laptop what the MacBook actually is. The MBP is much more expensive but technically it is not that much different; the MB is a very good laptop with a 'poor' graphics chip...

Yeah I agree. I think assuming that an annoucement made in Germany will be done at an American suitable time is a bit, I don't know, ignorant? And thats too strong a word but I can't think of a better. Admitadly the itunes one was done at the normal U.S time so I could be wrong, but would agree 7pm is a bit late to make an annoucement. Then again it is apple, and the world revolves around america doesn't it :p .

P.s. this is meant to be a bit tongue and cheek, please no one get offended.

mac addicts unite!

hey, all--this is my first post to the forum. please forgive me if i screw this up.

i have a pbG4 550 on the verge of collapse, and i purchased a new MBP 17" on saturday (9/16). however, i have not yet opened the box as i've been anticipating the upgrade announcement any day now (thanks to you guys, mostly). at least i'll have a MBP on hand if my pb suddenly calls it quits, but i'm obviously keeping my fingers crossed about the upgrade.

that said, if we are reasonably sure that these new merom MBP's are ready, but merely waiting on apple marketing to pull the trigger, can't we force their hand by aggressively spreading the rumor far and wide that the new MBP's are coming out any minute, and that consumers should not purchase a MBP until they do? i realize this might result in a few older models out there, but surely apple can find buyers for those at a discount.

am i crazy?

Not crazy, your wish is probably shared with many of us, but I doubt it'd help much.
If we could get all those people that don't visit sites like these realize that there is an old processor in the premium-priced machines they're about to buy, that should halt sales quite a bit. So many people don't realize, I think that's a main problem for us, and godsend for Apple. They're probably still seeling a lot right now, and if they still have leftovers that's exactly what they want.
I just hope people, and Apple, soon realizes that it's kind of unacceptable to sell old hardware for those prices. :)

So you are happy your NON-Returnable BTO Yonah 17" is shipping? :confused: :eek:

Please forgive me if I can't comprehend the source of your glee. :rolleyes:

I suppose some sort of congratulations are in order. Way to go Taylor. Your impatience is impeccable. A wonderful example of restraint gone south. I think I'm gonna cry now. :(

I see everyone else here is speechless or fingerless. I'm starting to think your post made everyone leave. They had to go throw up in the bathroom. lol.

BTW Taylor is also my name. Man or woman?

Well .... If the world was flat like originally thought, then there would be no problem....!

BUT....

It is round.....at least I think it is :eek:

* C2D: definitely
* RAM: 1 GB standard (1 SODIMM)
* Graphics: definitely a dedicated card, with 256MB VRAM, but almost certainly something that critics will call "outdated" because it is already 4 months old; wonder if Apple will go with NVIDIA this time (7x00 series)
* Swappable HD: definitely
* Magnetic latch: probably
* DL SuperDrive: probably

HAPPY DAY!!! Just called Apple and they said YES if the MBP comes out with the C2D next week then I can return mine and get the same configurement with the C2D!!! Yes, now just more waiting.

so does that mean i should open my MBP and wait no longer?

or could taylorc be getting the upgraded version they will announce today?

or maybe they just count on some people being unaware or unconcerned about an upgrade?

or maybe i'm a moron (suspiciously similar to the word "merom").

That might just be a rumor. :p
