ah well. holding off until next monday means a better chance of having the new mbp's ready to purchase at all apple stores. i'll be one of the first people in line.

I'll be there elbowing you out of the way. :)

All this does is give me something to look forward to at the beginning of next week. Events are always exciting, especially when you're anticipating something cool that you really want. Though they're quite disappointing when what you want doesn't happen. For my own mental health, I've got to get something soon so I don't go nuts. :)

Wet blanket time -- but given the teething troubles of the first MBPs then the MacBook, I think a little judicious waiting might be in order.

Those who are desperate to get 'em can be the guinea pigs ;)

Coward? Probably... :)

i've got high hopes riding on this event at photokina. both macshrine and macosxrumors are confident this will be the event for the new mbp's. two rumor sites with fairly good track records...

sounds like a winner to me! :)

Since my C2D MBP on the 19th has fizzled, I'm now banking on this to hopefully come true at Photokina. More waiting, more patience. It's my mantra. :)

That's a good little capitalist. The system has raised you well. ;)

...and that makes three of us fighting our way to the counter on the 25th. We're sick people. When will apple design a computer for us professional consumers? *audience boos the rotten pun, absurdio is dragged off stage and beaten*

I agree with you, for the most part; the first computer out the gate is probably not gonna be the most stable. But, I don't really have a choice. I'm replacing a 3-yr old broken-ass TiBook (and, by some divine miracle, Apple is actually paying for most of this), so there's only so long i can stall and hope for upgrades. That said, I'm gonna go ahead and hope that this Rev. B will solve a lot of the Rev A's problems without introducing a lot of new ones. That's probably just naive wishful thinking, but it'll have to do.

See y'all in the stores ;)

Coward? Hell no. You're just being cautious. Buying first revisions of hardware is always a gamble. Just look at the relatively recent launches of Xbox 360 and HD-DVD as pretty evident examples.

I am taking a risk buying the first rev of the C2D MBP. But after waiting so long to get my hands on one, I doubt I could have the patience required to wait further in case something goes horribly wrong with the first line.

AppleCare, here I come! :D

LOL

Well, I'm thinking more of awaiting the first batch of consumer reviews. The first round of MBP problems showed up online pretty quickly. I figure 2-3 weeks should weed that out.

AppleCare's a good choice on a laptop, but I think I'll go for something that offers accidental damage cover too... I figure I'm a bigger danger than Apple's component suppliers, sadly.

Plus, stuff being dragged around on 'planes, trains, etc. ...

Yeah, I wouldn't wait if I needed it already.

I also think the likelyhood of problems depends on what form the upgrade takes -- if they just swap out the CPU, I see no reason it would show teething troubles, since from what I hear the current MBPs are fine now.

Otherwise, I'll await your reports :)

Yeah, I'm secretly hoping this update isn't going to be a big overhaul. The more they change, the more is likely to go wrong. On the other hand, this machine was the very last generation of TiBook, and it still had more problems than anything ever created (this particular machine, not that generation as a whole).

Plus, i'm sortof indifferent to the magnetic latch, and think it might look sortof silly on the aluminum case. If the MB-style keyboard comes at the expense of losing the backlit keyboard, i'm not interested in it. And I like the style of the present MBPs, so i see no reason to change the housing. The only things i'd like to see changed in the 15" mbp are: 1) FW800 2) DL 8x superdrive 3) at least a 7200rpm 120gb hd (though 160 would be ideal), and 4) maybe a better graphics card.

Most of that stuff already exists in the 17" model, so it's at least conceivable that they'll get it into the 15" this time around. And it seems more likely to me that the big overhaul (including form factor and all that) will be sometime next year...about when Leopard comes out.

Anyway, if there aren't merom mbps in another week, i'm going to a) cry and b) give up and get whatever's on offer. *sigh*

In the UK at least, there are two links/portals for online education purchases http://store.apple.com/Catalog/uk/Images/routingpage.html (or see attached screenshot) one of which states "You can only access the above link from your Institution's network"

According to aly & Slakerr the Institution network route gets you an additional discount + free applecare (& also aly sez you get "free pickup for £54" but I don't understand what that means  )

My one concern (other than everything else I should be working on instead of doing this ;-) is that I already bought an entry level Macbook for my mother in law using the individual link, and I have a horrible feeling that I read somewhere on this site that you get one discount a year... if this means that I have lost my chance to get double dicount and free applecare on a 17" MBP for the sake of a measly £50 in my wife's mother's pocket I will be

Hey, sorry if some one clarified this already but heres my turn. If you go to www.apple.com/uk/education/store you are presented with three options. Store for education which gives a good discount and then secondly store for higher education. This is the mother of all education discount stores but you must be on your campus network and confirm your institution. This gives you better discount, free applecare and for £54 free pickup. I guess the pick up means that they send a courier to get your broken apple goods? But I'd imagine this is more for institutions where they cant just wonder to the nearest apple repairer. And to clarify further, this is a web store, not done via a campus shop that you walk in to.
Good day all :)

Edit: forgot to add, AppleKrate, it was i that mentioned the only buying one of each type of computer, I do not know if this means in the broad sense of one notebook or MBP and MB as two seperate types. Also it is unclear if it means financial year, calendar year or even academic year... As in we are at the start of a new one.

I agree. I don't think those concerned about being guinea pigs with the updated MBP's have too much to worry about. The 'real' Rev A's will be sometime next year with a completely overhauled design bearing little or no resemblance to current Macbook pros. Apple cannot go on squeezing life out of the powerbook style chassis design forever. The current MBPs and soon-to-be Rev B's are just interim solutions (IMO).

Well what do ya know? No update to our MBP's again... How long will we have to wait?! I even woke up early this morning anticipating an early morning revision...Apple owes me for my lost sleep

Well, everybody seems to be setting their hopes upon Photokina...but remember just 2 weeks ago, Apple released their new iMac and Mac Mini modles on a Wednesday

Maybe Wednesday is the next Tuesday? Let's hope...

Ok thanks for that, the link I gave was the education link from the main store page... maybe they end up in the same place? (maybe we all will, like Curtis Mayfield said?!) Anyway, I can't find where it says about one purchase a year... if you can point me to it I'd be grateful (but I'd be even more grateful if it didn't exist :D )

And keep in mind that the reason we saw updates on a Wednesday instead of the standard Tuesday was most likely due to the fact that everyone had that Monday off because of the Labor Day holiday. I wouldn't bet on any updates tomorrow, though you won't see me complaining if updates do happen. :)

New iMacs Happened On Wednesday Because Monday Was A Holiday

It happened on Wednesday because Monday was a national holiday - not because Wednesday is the new Tuesday.

I agree wholeheartedly. School starts on Friday for me, so waiting until next Tuesday is only because I "have" to. If they're not updated by then, I'm going to have to suck it up and get a Yonah. Oh, the horror!

Actually, be to totally honest, if they're not updated anytime soon, which I'm hoping for my sake and every other rumor-forum-crazy they do, I'm gonna cry. I've waited all summer hoping there would be some kind of new enclosure or some kind of added bonus to the already beautiful MBP that's going to have to last me the rest of my years in college. But patience is a virtue, right?

Don't worry. My prediction that today would be the day that MBP's with C2D would be announced didn't happen. We still have until tomorrow to see if you're correct. If not, we point and laugh.

Here's hoping tomorrow doesn't deliver C2D MBP's! ;)

Given the recently-released MBP is still aluminum, I don't see the MBP being offered in anything but. They could change the looks some, but I can't see it being radical.

I'd like to see, say, a Go 7700 added in there. I don't see the 7200RPM drives becoming standard, much as I'd like it myself... FW800 isn't part of any current Intel chipsets, AFAIK, so you'll need something like the TI controller on there. About as likely as a Go 7700, I guess.

We shall see what transpires...

Oh, I remembered your quote all right. Sadly, I've been on this forum for so long that just saying "Patience is a virtue" made me think, 'But wait, didn't I read something else saying something to the contrary?' and i just couldn't think of what it was. Arghhh I need the new MBPs just so I can get off of these forums.

Of course, that'll never happen.

Reading over this forum, I noticed that the "buzz" about our MBP's has definitely slowed down...has Apple caused us to be depressed? Why can't Steve just release our computers...we need some convo here :D

I think a lot of people got sick of it because it's pretty much going around in circles now...

I don't think it's so much depressed as bored with the conversation.

Yeah, i've gotta say that incessantly refreshing this page has become a lot less exciting since last night. *sigh*
