Multimedia, so in my case I'm getting my MBP on Monday, should I just let that thing sit in the box just in case they release the MBP with C2D next week??? I've waited this long so I might as well wait a little longer as is, fingers crossed!!!

Seriously, You Numbskulls Can't Order MBPs And Then Show Up Here To Brag About It

Yes please do. If you can refuse or return it I would phone and ask to do that right now.

What are you people thinking?!  :(  Is this about that Academic Free iPod deal?

You guys need to find a "I just bought a Yonah MacBook Pro" thread for recovering shopaholics. This is the thread for those who are going to buy Merom MacBook Pros AFTER they are announced. Get it?

OK am I to understand that we have a bunch of academics here who just bought old Yonah MacBooks so they could get a reduced price on an old iPod? And some of you are figuring out that Apple will still let you exchange them for Merom MBPs if they are announced next week?

You guys all need to preface any of your posts with that is your situation. We can't read your minds or remember your opening posts many pages ago. Thank you in advance for your consideration.

I agree with most of your requirements; however I would like the Graphic chip to work at normal speeds instead of being underclocked as it appearantly is. Also, I do miss my FireWire 800 connection. As i do video editting every now-and-then I bought a FW800 drive for storing digital media for editting. FW400 still works but I find FW400 'normal' and not 'Pro'... I have it in my PB 15" and find it silly that it is not present anymore in the MBP 15". Also, a larger (120GB or 160GB?) 7200rpm SATA harddisk would be very much appreciated.

If you look at the competing brands they offer DL drives, pre-n wireless, better graphic chips, etc... I would say a MBP should have at least similar specs you would expect for the amount of money it actually costs (similar or more expensive than brands that do offer these extra functionality).

Also, I think there is too less difference between a MB and a MBP compared to the iBook/PB lines. The main difference would be the allu casing and a better graphics chip... If I buy a Professional laptop I would expect it to be much better than a consumer laptop what the MacBook actually is. The MBP is much more expensive but technically it is not that much different; the MB is a very good laptop with a 'poor' graphics chip...

1. The GPU's are not underclocked.
2. Yes, it's not the same without FW800.
3. They are going to offer 160 GB in the MBP. It's in the Mini already.
4. Who's offering 802.11n?
5. They have DL. For this one revision the 15" haven't, because they made it 1", but DL will be back.
6. There's always someone that's going to offer a 2.5" thick laptop that have better specs than the MBP. Apple is aiming at a realistic market.
7. What difference did the iB and PB have that the MB and MBP don't have?

Think before you post...:D

so does that mean i should open my MBP and wait no longer?

or could taylorc be getting the upgraded version they will announce today?

or maybe they just count on some people being unaware or unconcerned about an upgrade?

or maybe i'm a moron (suspiciously similar to the word "merom").

Hey mactruc, congratulations on your new mac. To answer your first 3 questions: your stock-in-the-box machine is returnable if unopened, but taylorc's is a built-to-order machine (ie taylorc has selected an option like more RAM) which Apple will not take back. So you have the choice to wait or not to wait...

To answer your 4th question: A little knowledge is a dangerous thing, but too much knowledge is a pain in the
For me these forums have taken the place of magazines like macuser & macworld which I used to read to avoid making a 'moronic' buying decision but in the same way I never subscribed to them because as soon as I had taken the plunge with my new mac I DID NOT WANT TO KNOW that the next big thing was around the corner, so I will be saying sayonara to macrumors (for a while at least ;) ) after I finally press the pay button...

until then... :)

man why does every post of yours seem like some one pissed in your cheerios or you need to get some nookie! :p

Theres 2 discounts at play here. The laptop and the iPod, not iPod only. There was a date attached to the rebate. It happened to fall just before this "rumored" Merom launch.

Some of us have to buy at specific times due to our own reasons.

Now my MBP may arrive the same day as this "rumor" is announced. Our posting of these dates have added to the rumor build up, so just because we are not specifically buying a Merom MBP, its all part of Apple and their plans...

Now Im off to the other thread you speak of. BTW can you add that link?

Enjoy them cheerios :p

For those of you who just bought a current MBP and want to return it if the new one comes out...

A. If you mail in the UPC for the iPod rebate, you cannot return the MBP.
B. If you open the MBP, you must pay a 10% restocking fee to upgrade.
C. You must pay return shipping if you bought it online
D. If you changed any specs on the MBP, you cannot return it.

This is the reason I didn't purchase one last week. This is straight from the Apple Store's Manager's mouth at my (somewhat) local Apple Store.

So having ordered a 2.16 GHZ with 100 gig hard drive @ 7200 rpm with 2 gigs of RAM, yes I customized mine. Through the academic deal I'm screwed, is that correct?

From what I was told, since you got the 100gb HDD and the RAM, your machine is now considered BTO, and cannot be returned unless defective.

I'm in your boat; I'm wanting the 17' with the 2 stick for 1gb of ram (I'll buy my own, so it shaves off $100), I want the 100gb HDD, and the glossy screen. So, if I purchase it, I'm stuck with it.

So, I'm waiting until next Friday. But I can't wait any longer than that.

or... you have a very nice machine that many people would dearly love to own... please enjoy it :)

You know if that's the case then that's fine. Any MAC is by far better than a PC, I'm tired of my Dell XPS that I got from my company, too many crashes and speed isn't just there. I want the MBP with the C2D for the 64 bit capability, but if I jumped the gun then it's my problem. Regardless, I'm getting the machine that I want/need for all my uses in school and personal use. So that's fine by me. But if I do get to return it then oh Happy Day for me. Although here's a question, Leopard's going to be able to still run 32 bit stuff right??? I'm still learning all this. Thanks.

Blame you?! hell, if i didn't have some imaginary date to obsess mindlessly over, i'd have to spend my time reviewing latin or doing that term paper from last year. Blame you!? Sir, i owe you my sincerest thanks.

Well, I guess... you're welcome? :) After Photokina, if the MBP isn't announced I will have no more imaginary dates other than "sometime before Thanksgiving" was stated in the Appleinsider article. I simply hope they intro the C2D MBP at Photokina. Otherwise, who knows when from that point?

Of course, the upside of waiting longer is the strong possibility of a redesign to work out any kinks from the previous gen MBP's, and that will be a very good thing.

I think we may see a 64-bit version of Aperature that takes immediate advantage of the C2D 64-bit capabilities.

Could a 64-bit application take advantage of 64-bit processor/architechture without having the 64-bit OS to run it all on? I'm just curious.

Well Apple are not unknown to build-in obsolescence but i reckon you've got a couple of years life left ;)

ps sometimes old machines are useful... i still occasionally need to boot my Quicksilver into OS9 for certain porpoises

Just curious, does unopened--in the case of a return/exchange--refer to the MBP box or the [brown] shipping box that the MBP box comes in?

What I was told was that if from the date of order, I ordered online, then 14 days from that point on if there's a change in the current machine (this case the MBP) then you will receive an email and have the choice to return and upgrade your machine. I'm going to assume that you need to return it in the brown box it came in. That's what I'm going to do in case they release it next week.

In my case, I was thinking of taking it directly to an Apple store, so it wouldn't really need the shipping box. Just wondering.

Moreover, the latest rumor is that we won't see C2D MBPs until after Halloween.

So is it more trick or more treat?

I think one of the concepts we might want to begin wrapping our collective heads around is the idea that me might not see merom MBP's until much later than Photokina.

The ZDNet article/blog could bear some truth as concerns a delay. The good that could come from it is the much sought after redesign to allow for better heat disipation, easy access HDD bay, better gfx card, mag-latch, etc. The bad is that we'll have to wait even longer than originally expected.

Come Monday, there might be much gnashing of teeth and pulling of hair as has not been seen before.

I was also told that if you ordered online then you need to return it through the mail as well. Sorry...

Oh I hope that's true... but what about the kinks from the new generation MBP's
(note to all you worried late-Yonah owners: come back soon on your crisply-ironed machines and enjoy a glass of schadenfreude on us :p)

Just got off the phone wit the local Apple store; they said exchange would be possible as long as not a BTO. :)

jason o'grady doesn't know jack schit. he's talking out of his ass. read all of his previous predictions. most of them are off. i am trusting macosxrumors WAY MORE than o'grady. look at all of macosxrumors postings and you will see what i mean. they rarely ever post their OWN predictions...but when they do, 9 times out of 10, it all happens just like they said.

get ready people. i can feel the merom mbp's coming.
