I have a sneaking suspicion that they're having engineering difficulties. The MBP enclosure is small and poorly ventilated, so if the yonah was pushing it's thermal envelope (and given the discussions regarding the MBP heating problems, that seems likely) and it turns out that the merom runs hotter in 64 bit mode, they may have been forced to do a major enclosure redesign to produce a merom-based MBP which won't melt down when people put leopard on it next year.
Couple that with a stockpile of yonah-based MBPs that are selling reasonably well during the 'back-to-school' promotions with the iPods, and the fact that other OEMs are just hitting the market with C2D-based laptops, and Apple's silence on the merom-MBP is understandable.
I had hoped for a merom-based MBP last week, but now I expect that we won't see one until sometime next month, or possibly November. However I'm now hopeful that the merom-based MBPs will sport new enclosures with better ventilation, swappable hdds, better GPUs, and other enhancements (a sexy new black-anodized aluminum case... or maybe something even more exotic like carbon fibre?).
I'm hopeful that this is just the lul before the storm and we will all say, "wow, that was worth the wait!"
You and me both.
