There MUST be a reason Apple is withholding the C2D. Just wish I knew!

I have a sneaking suspicion that they're having engineering difficulties. The MBP enclosure is small and poorly ventilated, so if the yonah was pushing it's thermal envelope (and given the discussions regarding the MBP heating problems, that seems likely) and it turns out that the merom runs hotter in 64 bit mode, they may have been forced to do a major enclosure redesign to produce a merom-based MBP which won't melt down when people put leopard on it next year.

Couple that with a stockpile of yonah-based MBPs that are selling reasonably well during the 'back-to-school' promotions with the iPods, and the fact that other OEMs are just hitting the market with C2D-based laptops, and Apple's silence on the merom-MBP is understandable.

I had hoped for a merom-based MBP last week, but now I expect that we won't see one until sometime next month, or possibly November. However I'm now hopeful that the merom-based MBPs will sport new enclosures with better ventilation, swappable hdds, better GPUs, and other enhancements (a sexy new black-anodized aluminum case... or maybe something even more exotic like carbon fibre?).

I'm hopeful that this is just the lul before the storm and we will all say, "wow, that was worth the wait!"

You and me both.

cheers

Waiting for the new MBP is like Agony and Ecstasy.

But without the Ecstasy.

I was reading in the paper yesterday about Intel ... they're confident and aggressively pushing their new quad-core chips. The article mentioned they'll be available for 'enterprise-level' servers by Nov. 2006, and consumer level chips will be out shortly in the New Year.

So if we're talking about the C2D, a mainstream, consumer-level technology: where's the new MBP?

* deafening silence ... *

my take on the whole wait is as follows:

after waiting since June for a new MBP, i would feel even more foolish if i broke down and bought something right now.

<... snip...>

So at this point 5% speed increase or not, i am darn well going to wait until what is just around the corner is here, however long it takes.

i am also less enthralled by the minor performance upgrade than i am by other upgrades to HD, RAM capacity, video card, easy access HD bay, etc... I also feel that every day we wait is a day more likely we will see a case redesign and not just a drop-in processor upgrade.

<... more snippage ...>

i have the cash set aside, so at this point i am just going to be waiting :)

I am in exactly the same boat (with the exception that I'm using an AlBook rather than a TiBook, so I have somewhat less to complain about), but I'm also determined to sit on my money until there's an upgrade.

It's also interesting to note that this thread is about to break 100 pages, which may be a MacRumors record, so apparently there is a lot of interest in the impending release of merom-based MBPs.

Cheers

I was just in my local department store buying a new nano. I had a look around their computer section, lots of Sony, Toshiba, HP etc laptops on display, widescreen, glossy, you name it... but not one single Merom out of ca. 40 different models.

Who was it saying that Apple have missed the boat?

PS: They even had a couple of PPC Macbooks still there... really cheap and very tempting!

Uh, missing the boat?

Sorry to be flogging a dead horse with a wet noodle here, but a brief check to online vendors shows that Intel Core2Duo chips are shipping in a LOT of popular models now.

Example: Dell has at least 6 models you can order right now.

i think too they are doing an enclosure redesign and it pushed them behind schedule. i just hope the ball is gonna get rolling soon

Anyone living in China could sneak in an Apple factory and tell what they're assembling right now ?
I'm afraid it would still be Yonahs...

Updated Isight?

But if you were to place and pay for an order with Del, I think you'll find most of those models won't ship until mid-October. The charge that 'the competition has been shipping Merom for weeks' is an exaggeration.

Best Buy has Sony Core 2 Duo notebooks available at its brick and mortar stores now.

I saw a guy walk out of the mac store with a white and a black macbook. Just cause he couldn't decide which he liked more.

..and then when he got to the end of the street took a look at the black one, then the white, placed the latter in the street garbage bin, smiled and walked off.

Sony makes a lot of great products...specifically TVs and gaming systems...computers are not one of those things.

The Sonys that I support are usually much slower than the Toshibas and Dells that I see (due to extra software running, which is needed to run their 'extra parts'...scroll devices, cameras...etc).
They look nice (or did at one point), but I feel they're not worth it.

Just Grab A Temporary $949 Refurb From The SAVE Page & Resell It As Soon AS MBP Ships

I have decided that I shalln't wait for the new MBP, but rather will order an ordinary white MacBook now.

Why?

It's cheaper, and with a Quad G5 at home I realy don't need a MBP on the move.

EDIT: Oh, and white because the black one is for some reason more expensive.
Go to the SAVE page and get a 1.83GHz version for only $949. Then when MBP ships, you can sell it for $800-$900 and you've "rented" a new MB for $50-$150 in the meantime..

I think I saw him give the white one to a homeless person down that block. ;)

I'm just (j/gr)umpy. I'll keep hoping. Last week of Oct. will probably have to be the drop dead date for us. *fingers crossed*

Wait a dog gone minute ck. I wrote WORST CASE. It is more likely to be in October in time for your purchase. I'll be surprised if it isn't in the next 4 weeks sometime. So stick with your plan. :)

The New More Efficient Silent But Deadly Release Pattern

so i guess it will be a silent refresh then
Right. Like they did with the all new MacBook in May and the C2D iMac after Labor Day:

• a press release
• an online store change
• a website cover
• a white paper
• a half dozen details web pages

It's really the most cost efficient way for them to do it. When you think about it, this also makes sense from a supply and demand point of view as well.

By not shouting too loud to begin with, they can reduce the flood of new orders they will need to fulfill right away while they continue to make more for the masses who will follow as the word drips out from us to them - "us" being the word of mouth messengers who blab any shred of Apple news to anyone with a pulse every day. :p

Save $200 Buying White And Buy A Seagate 160GB HD For The Easy Access HD Bay

eb6 said:
The black ones do have an 80 GB HD as opposed to the whites 60. But that seems a little steep for 20GB. They must have a thing for black, i.e. the black nano.
For that $200 difference you can buy a Seagate 160GB HD and slip it right in that easy access HD Bay in 5 minutes.

I've already "purchased" for FREE at Fry's after rebate 2 external 2.5" USB2 HD enclosures so I can put the small one I will remove from inside the MB or MBP outside in exchange for the Seagate 160 I will buy right away at Fry's or online according to the best deal I can find. 160GB - 2.5" SATA drives are due a Fry's bargain sale deal soon.

Yeah, then I heard the homeless guy looked at it and said "ah, I'm waiting for the Merom" and dumped it in the trash bin.

:)

That says it right there. Anytime someone asks me what they can do to fix their windows/pc problem, I simply tell them to visit apple.com to start enjoying using a computer again.

Of course, I leave out the fine details about becoming less sane from ending up being sucked into the rumor mill of when, when, and did I mention when?

Then again, most of these people just want something that works and could care less if it was CD, C2D, or whatever.

This being the case, they're headed to the right place. ;)

How many times are you (we) going to be surprised? Down south they would say "that dog don't hunt no more"
