Reading the article it seems the headline should have been "Chrome drains battery" or alternately "Independent tests using Apple methodology recreate Apple claims on battery life."

No, the headline should have been "Chrome drains battery faster than it did on 2015 model because 2016 model has a 20% smaller battery and relies on Skylake power-throttling tricks to get same advertised life at low CPU loads" - but that doesn't roll off the tongue so nicely.

Apple only released 1 Mac product this year - just one - yet this is what has become of it. They took enough time, you'd think they'd get it right. Perhaps they needed another year.

I'm not sure what all the complaining is about - I routinely get battery life of 10-11 hours with my 13" MacBook Pro.

Oh, wait - mine is the 2015 model... :D

On a side note - ever since the new ones were released, I've noticed the refurb store has routinely been out of the 2015 models (except sometimes the ones with 128GB drives). I really should have bought a second one - I love this thing.

I am one of those suffering with short battery life on my 2016 15" MBP, even after reinstalling Sierra.

Screen brightness at 50% and standard usage (youtube, skype, email, etc) yields about 5 hours :(

That's good but to be fair, it weighs almost 7 lbs. too.

Indeed it does... But I don't have to bring the charger (or deal with it), so it works out better in the end.

Imagine the battery life if they made one using modern parts.

You really can't use the battery status estimate as an indicator of actual battery life, especially in the first few cycles. It's just an estimate after all and it isn't perfect. It'll adjust and go up or down during use even when the power draw remains fairly constant.

To get an actual figure you'll have to drain the battery under the conditions of Apple's Wi-Fi test.

To do this, charge the laptop to 100% (leave it charging for at least 10-15 minutes after it says 100%). Unplug and use it only for browsing with Safari on Wi-Fi with a brightness no greater than 75% (12 clicks up from off). Don't open, use or switch to any other apps (or have them running in the background) except perhaps Text Edit or some other known low-power apps. You won't be able to do this in one sitting so close the laptop and "stop the clock" when it's asleep. The minimal power drain when asleep isn't significant. Keep track of the times it's in use such as when you start, stop and when it finally powers off. It may help to have an ad blocker installed in Safari.

Doing this should give you a figure of around 10 hours as claimed but I'd suggest 9 hours is acceptable. Less than 7-8 would be unacceptable and 5-6 would indicate a problem in my opinion, be it software (drivers) or hardware.

Make sure you test with adequate Wi-Fi signal strength as well.
Really? They said that? Even though the 2.9Ghx cpu would hardly be ticking over? Mine takes a while to calculate remaining time which usually starts off as 3:55 and sometimes eventually gets to 5+ hrs only when the screen brightness is 25% and I'm reading iBooks. I find it hard to believe that Apple would say that's normal - I'll book a slot at the genius bar because this seems abhorrent. Good thing I use this on battery all day.

Sorry to hear about your troubles.

Yes, they said that.

That's pretty rich coming from a guy who, at the time he said that, was trying to sell us a $10,000 (~$18,000 in today's dollars) computer that couldn't do much of anything. What was the NeXT Cube's market share?

Apple has a choice, profit or market share. They have chosen profits.

Sure, you can blame Jobs for not understanding the market and the budget constraints universities had by building a too advanced and costly computer, but this is not really the case for Apple. They are making huge profits, which NeXT never made, at the expensive of a lower market share.

Got to say I'm worried about the battery life on my new MPBTB. Only done two charge cycles and definitely getting less than 5 hours. Thought it might be because it was new and spotlight was indexing, but now don't think that's the case.

Just opened it up after a day asleep on batter and lost 25% juice in last 45 minutes. Will be contacting Apple if this continues!

Thought it was just me who noticed that the battery was pretty bad or maybe because it was just a new computer.

Just glad the return period is until January 8th.

Wow MacRumors is really on a crusade to crap all over these new MBPs.

It's called reporting the facts. Aren't you, 'key's', DannyS, and the rest of the non-stop apple defenders getting a little weary? This isn't macrumors or us forum members making stuff up.

I'm personally very disappointed in so many things about Apple's computer line that it's heartbreaking. The fact that they give you one very flawed computer in a year and a half and you still seem to need to defend Apple's so-called computer line, is mind-boggling to me.

Seems like Tim Cook could take a big steaming ---- , put an apple logo on it, market it for $1000, and you'd be there, wondering what all the 'whining' is about.

Why anyone who uses an external monitor and doesn't automatically plug mac into mains really surprises me.
My magsafe adapter is pluged in right next to my 24'' Samsung 4K ready to go.
With apple wireless keyboard and logitech wireless mouse.
Simples.

I've long made it a personal policy never to upgrade to version x.0 of any operating system. When it comes to something critical like an OS, "let the world be the beta testers," I say.

Maybe the time has come to adopt the same thinking to new hardware too. Too early to know if this is usage, software power mgmt, or hardware, but between the speakers and the graphics and the battery, maybe there's a MBPTB Rev. 2 in the offing.

My daughter runs chrome non stop on her 2011 mbp and still gets 5 hours.

You and others want to keep making excuses for this POS but I cant figure out why.
Look at the hundreds of posts that says Chrome drains battery life. Not just in this thread but threads over the past few years.
Nobody is making excuses. You just can't see past your own self centered personal opinions. Since you don't seem to listen to reason, you're not worth my time. Ignored.

Run a Chrome test yourself. The current version isn't as brutal as you're making it out to be.

But you're probably too consumed with blindly defending apple to try.
