running an external monitor is not a big deal, since the monitor has dedicated power supply that the MBP is only giving out video signal.

Ehm: Of course running additional GPU-cycles to create the image for additional high res monitors creates significant load, especially with gaming…

Sorry, they've already set sales records. Now what?

Everything but new sales records now would have been a complete desaster. Neither of us know if the machines selling according to Apple's internal expectations, though the quick decrease of dongle prices and external monitors could mean that it doesn't run too well. If demand dries up quickly, it can still be a problematic product for Apple.

See how the toxic stew of negativity on MR is impacting you?

Not a bit… really. I've just bought a stable MBP 2015, I'm fine. I also know quite a few people who have waited for the new machines and not going in right now. If Intel comes up with a new CPU, support for more RAM etc, that likely will change, of course. However, right now Apple has failed to make quite a few sales among die hard OS X users that earn serious money using their machine.

This was the first downside that I noticed about my new MBP 15". No way that I get 10 hours of battery while web browsing. Maybe 4 hours at most.

Don’t mischaracterize his argument to make it easier to attack. It’s one of the most common logical fallacies, and trivial to spot.

Also, “there” should be “their”.

The reason cameras still use flash cards is because they can transfer huge amounts of data many times faster than is currently possible wirelessly. If you’re a photographer who captures huge raw files, speed matters more than going wireless for the sake of convenience or defending Apple’s honor for the MacBook Pro’s lack of an SD card reader.
Yes, their is often confusion caused by incorrect predictive text corrections to mistypes

I had presumed the original poster has a studio situation with cameras normally on tripods and was unsatisfied by the existing wireless capabilities of cameras.
I did perhaps err by thinking he was against SD cards per se. I have seen other comments about SD cards being outdated tech and Apple were right to remove reader slots to "move the industry on".
SD cards are the most convenient and cost effective storage for cameras and also portable music players.

This laptop is so thin and light that you can carry an external battery to address the issue ... just make sure you have the right dongle for it.

Also, the SD card reader was woefully outdated. There are newer SD card standards it didn't support. Plus, its only SD. not CF ect. All photographers, cameramen I know have card readers so they can plug all types in and hardly used the built in slot.

Hi... Windows also has crappy life with Chrome... This isn't rocket science... Google it and you'll how Edge does vs Chrome. MS had a field day with this exact issue...

Chrome is a battery hog on my Windows and Linux machine as well...

*eye roll*

I have first hand experience with the 2016, I'm typing on one right now. I also have a 2015 as a reference.... It's funny how so many people are posting arguing with first hand experience. What's weirder is the expectation that the laptop will power an external FHD monitor and still hit the 10 hour battery life mark... I bet you want a pony as well... :)

The performance of the two 13" has been pretty much spot on with both the Arstechnica and Notebook Check reviews. The non touch lasting a bit longer and both bookending the MBPr 2015 model's life...

If I use Chrome, they all suffer including my Lenovo Carbon and my Linux box... This isn't some kind of weird Apple issue...

/sigh

I use Chrome on my 2014 MacBook Pro and it's fine.

3 users from the article:

1. "Currently I'm powering a 1080p external monitor and casually browsing with Chrome. At full charge, I'm getting an estimate of 3 hours battery life. With gaming it's even less."

2. "MacRumors forum member Scott claimed he experienced a 5 percentage point drop in battery life, from 10% to 5%, in just 12 minutes. Google Chrome, a known battery hog, was listed as the only app drawing significant power."

3. "I've been working non-stop for the past 1.5 hours, back and forth between emails, Safari, Calendar, Messages, organizing files, editing some PDFs in Adobe Acrobat DC, and building a financial model in Excel. I started at 100% and am now at 92% battery, with an estimated 10 hours 35 minutes remaining. If you're not getting this kind of battery life on your MBP you should definitely get it checked out."

Maybe you should take your own advice and read the article.

All I know is that I don't use chrome and I'm getting decent battery life on my 15" tmbp. Had to do an smc reset at first, but since then battery life seems equivalent to my late 2014 rmbp.

I like how the main argument the apologists make is "but it's sold a lot!" So? That doesn't suddenly excuse battery life and graphics issues. The majority of people who buy the laptop aren't going to be doing much more than internet browsing, taking notes, and listening to music (aka what most of my friends do with their laptops), so that really means little as far as problems encountered with more "intensive" use.

A majority of the people complaining about poor battery life are using Chrome and won't even entertain using Safari.

I have a 15 inch Macbook Pro 2011 and exclusively use Chrome. I still get around 4-6 hours of battery life, and have never replaced the battery.

A new machine getting under 6 hours of battery life when the claim is 10 is a disgrace.

I couldn't agree more.

I have an old 2009ish Unibody MacBook Pro with 10.6 and upgraded a 2011 MacBookPro 17" to Sierra.
Sierra seems to be an issue here, as the overall battery life and performance is horrible.

Unfortunately my 2012 MacBook Pro Retina (largest model) has died 6 month ago due to not liking Cappuccino.
I cannot afford to buy the current model in a configuration I would like.

Currently my main machine is still a 2008 MacPro with ElCapitan that works OK.

I doubt Apple will spend much time fixing Sierra.
My guess is that external monitors and TB3 connected hardware like SSD drives are too power hungry to run this MacBook 2016 without a power supply.

Physics seems to be the limiting factor here.
Just keep in mind that a USB 2,0 drive could only tranfer 30MB/s or so.
Also, nobody tried to drive 4k or higher displays that long ago.

Apple has probably crashed into a brick wall and should adjust their marketing.
I do not think the situation will improve, because they will never revert their strategy of Thinner and Smaller hardware.

Yes, it's Probably a safe bet with record sales that people aren't clamoring for thicker heavier laptops.

Or, as Apple did, make sure it is so great that it sets sales records. As you struggle to understand this, remember that "hate" you speak of lies only in the hearts of a tiny speck of trollers and such, while worldwide hundreds of millions of people realize that Apple is still working on perfecting its products, but love Apple products so much that they will buy them this year.

Have you any evidence of this that didn't come from Apples senior vp of worldwide marketing ?

Kool Aid much?

Even at work when I am connected to an external monitor, I run the power supply. People that want to run a monitor from their mac for long periods of time are just wishful thinkers.

LOL…nice try guys, but the fake "battery life scandal" hasn't gained any traction outside of MacRumors.

Oh I agree. Don't get me wrong. People just have way too high expectations regarding the use of this laptop.
Especially considering the transfer speeds and power requirements of TB3, one cannot expect to drive external hardware for hours.
I'm just pointing out that we live in a different world now.
Let's say two years back, even with Retina MacBooks, I knew not a single person driving a 4k display or an external 1TB SSD with transfer speeds we have with TB today.
It's just not possible anymore.

...I don't actually believe it's a problem, I believe that the reduced battery size is causing the issue.

I guess this is the post-fact world. Believe what you want. But I think you'll be happier if you engage with reality.

Man if apple offered a CTO option for the 2015 with a dedicated gpu I know what I'd order this week.
Me too. Mine died and I thought I could by a 2016 one.
Even without the port situation, I cannot deal with the keyboard and the trackpad size.
But it doesn't matter because the price is hillarious.

I love almost everything about my new 15", but the battery life is really atrocious. I've shut down Outlook, Dropbox, iStats, which I would want to be using, and still am barely getting 4 hours of battery life with basically just casual Safari usage. I've reset the SMC (I think - hard to know without a tone!), but really nothing else is helping. If I'm running everything I wanted to, I'd be lucky to get 3 hours right now. That's exactly what I got with my mid-2012 retina MBP!

You can all say that we're blowing it out of proportion or just complaining to make headlines and sell ads, but the facts are that some of us really are getting terrible battery life out of these brand new machines, and it is significantly less than what Apple is advertising.

On my new MacBook Pro 2016 15" w/ Touch Bar spec'd with 512GB SSD and Radeon 455, I ran Apple's iTunes Media Playback Test:

  • On Battery from 100% Charge
  • 1080P Video, Fullscreen - Captain Phillips in this case
  • 75% Brightness - 12 Clicks up from off (disabled auto brightness)
  • I killed all other running apps/processes that weren't Apple Native before unplugging
  • (You'll see a few items grayed out in the list that were closed before unplugging, a few would not close but they're energy impact was minimal (0.01 or less))
  • I used gfxStatus to explicitly set it to use the Integrated Graphics
I've attached my results:

3:43 (3 Hours and 43 Minutes) w/ 2% Battery Life Remaining (0:03)

Basic easy test to do and the results were disappointing.
