Apple doesn't make the displays. They just put them in their products. Blame LG, NEC, Philips, etc etc etc. If anything, blame Apple for bad drivers and firmware.

By that logic Apple is always blameless because technically they don't make anything. That's why the stickers say "Designed by Apple in California." But guess what, it's Apple's name on the box, so quality is their responsibility.

Are any other 15.4" widescreen laptops having the same problem? (Something from Dell, IBM, etc.)

Yeah, I have a Dell Latitude (work-issued) that just had this problem. Rebooted and it went away. I assume it is software-controlled, because when it happened the start-up sequence didn't complete either.

Hey Apple can care less about your screen issues. All they want to do is sell Iphones now.

Speaking of iPhones...Anyone with an iPhone have any vertical streaking like the MPB on their iPhone screen. I do. It isn't horrible, but a bit of bother.
😕 (Probably going to get flamed for posting this here, but it is a display streaking issue.)

Yeah and to fix these Macbooks all you need to do is sleep the book, imagine if Dell's consumers were up in arms about this same LCD issue.

Apple fixed the Random Power Outs in RevA Macbooks, I'm sure this minor LCD thing can be fixed via a software update too.

So minor it's been happening for four months. That makes Apple either extremely complacent about issuing a fix for this "minor" issue or the engineers can't fix it.

Either way it's poor response.

I've had a macbook pro & looked a the new imac's they all have the same issue as: bright corners or light bleed around the frame of the screen. You can see this easier if you flood the screen with a solid color.

My 17"MBP does not have the issue your describing

persistent problem on my 1st MBP in April

I bought a new MBP 2.5 the first day it was released (I know, I know... but my PBG4 died a few hours before and I was desperate).

I had the "vertical stripes" issue over and over, as well as many other annoying issues (a kernel panic right out of the box! never a good sign...), mysterious crashing, HDs that wouldn't mount. Also an issue where suddenly after sleep the screen was imbued with a bluish tint.

After 6 weeks, I'd spent so much time with Applecare on this that they escalated me to a product specialist who told me there was an "open capture" on this model -- meaning they knew there were some kind of issues with this generation and they wanted it back. I went back to the same Apple Store and got a new(er) one. This one has worked fine, EXCEPT for the bluish tint (which I am hoping 10.5.3 will take care of...)

Thoughts, anybody?

I just have to say that wherever I go... when I set my MBP up next to any other laptop... my screen blows the other guys out of the water.

I have the 17" MBP and am not seeing this issue... although I do understand the frustration it would cause.

Just wanted to be a voice to defend the overall quality of the screen.

Apple's Quality Assurance is deteriorating.

Issues with the iMac 20" screen, issues with the 23" ADC (first gen), issues with MBP screen, issues with the iMac Aluminum video card, issues with the exterior coating of MBs, issues issues issues...

It's a shame. I don't know why this is happening, but :apple: should take note and fix the process.

"It just works" eh?!

I think we're talking 15-inchers. Anyway, I just realised I have a little bleed on mine. Fortunately I don't work with photos. Mostly audio.

Made in China!

They we're also made in China when Apple had good quality control. Besides, I think Thinkpads are also made in China, and they run circles around Apple's laptop quality wise.

That sucks... From my experience with Apple that sounds like you just got a lemon. I have converted my company completely over to mac... and (knock on wood) we have not had a single issue yet.

(well besides a third party app sync'ng calendars via google calendar and it created a billion duplicates... but hey... mobile me... and iPhone in Canada... looks like we will make the switch to iPhones and away from blackberry's now 2)

Isn't there also something with us MacBook users who have a display that really doesn't show all the colors and OS X really dithers it downward?

Looks okay though...

I understand the issue (striping) described in this topic was 15" related. But I was replying to Electrolytic's comments about an issue in ALL Apple screens.

Apple failed to respond to our repeated requests for comment.

Sounds to me like someone running MacRumors has this problem and tried to let Apple fix it... since they didnt get a response over time... they finally escalated it to the main page to increase the level of attention from :apple:.

I've had issues with the 2600 XT in my Mac Pro from day one. Not the hardcore problems that some people had early on, but on nearly every boot the main display of my dual display setup either flickers on and off repeatedly or has some crazy artifacts pop up just before the login sceen appears. Isn't a deal breaker as I've not had a problem during normal use, only boot.

Still, considering I was using a flashed, non-Mac, PC-model ATI 9200 AGP with my G4 with zero problems ever with these displays, it's a bit disappointing that the new models aren't of the same quality. I've already resigned myself to the fact that my 8-year-old "Sawtooth" G4 will probably be the most reliable, most well-built computer I'll ever own.
