I purchased a MBP 15" three weeks ago and this happened to me one time about 3 days after purchase...it was after the machine had been on for a long time without rest. I was restarting it when it occurred. Hasn't happened since.

While my 15 inch Santa Rosa MBP doesn't exhibit this issue with its LED, I do have a host of other problems that I've never had before with a Mac. Honestly, I wish Apple stuck with PPC. However, don't get me wrong though, I love all the perks (Windows software, virtualization, performance etc) of these Intel chips that just weren't possible on PPC.

I do know a Penyrn MBP owner who does have this issue, as well with other issues similar to my own.

Every PPC I've ever owned or used was the best. My only real lemon was my iBook, but even that was just one problem PPC Mac out of many perfectly fine ones. My G5 is a tank and never had an issue. *knocks on wood*

I regret never getting a Powerbook and I miss my iBook.

Long live the Powerbook and iBook.

I bought a new MBP 2.5 the first day it was released (I know, I know... but my PBG4 died a few hours before and I was desperate).

I had the "vertical stripes" issue over and over, as well as many other annoying issues (a kernel panic right out of the box! never a good sign...), mysterious crashing, HDs that wouldn't mount. Also an issue where suddenly after sleep the screen was imbued with a bluish tint.

After 6 weeks, I'd spent so much time with Applecare on this that they escalated me to a product specialist who told me there was an "open capture" on this model -- meaning they knew there were some kind of issues with this generation and they wanted it back. I went back to the same Apple Store and got a new(er) one. This one has worked fine, EXCEPT for the bluish tint (which I am hoping 10.5.3 will take care of...)

Thoughts, anybody?

The blue tint problem could be caused by your Colorsync profile, or at least it was for me on my Macbook back on Tiger... one of the 10.4.X updates introduced the error.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - there has been a noticeable quality drop off from Apple since the beginning of the G4/iPod era.

If either of these products contributed to it I know not, all I know is before Apple started to place more emphasis on translucent plastics and cool colors, their machines held up a lot better.

Yes, I'm sure there's a handful of pre 2000/2001 technical issues you can dig up (exploded batteries, etc), but it seems like since 2001, not a product release goes by with a considerable amount of issues reported. There may have been problem models back in the days of beige, but never across the entire product line.

Now, this might just mirror changes in the computer industry in general - or even the broader consumer electronics market - but it seems like a very clear line in the sand between the Pre-PPC/PPC/G3 era and the G4/G5/Intel era.

I definitely have this problem. I haven't read the thread yet, so excuse me if i repeat info, but it seems like it does it when i re-open the laptop after it's been sleeping. It pretty much blows that this is a problem. Very annoying for such a high $ piece of equipment.

I've already resigned myself to the fact that my 8-year-old "Sawtooth" G4 will probably be the most reliable, most well-built computer I'll ever own.

Now that you mention it, I've always felt the same way myself. All of my older Powermac G4s (DA, QS models & sawtooth especially) are just amazingly rock solid except for some Leopard issues (but most are technically not supported machines so that's expected).
I mean seriously, you couldn't make Tiger crash on these workhorses no matter how hard you try.

Every time I've upgraded to a better Mac since then, I seem to have more problems, whether it be my MDD or my G5 or my Mac Pro. As far as laptops go, I'm not really qualified on this subject as my last Apple laptop was a Powerbook 180c, but it was ROCK SOLID AWESOME too for it's time!

I would imagine from a PC switcher perspective, I'm being overly critical, but as a person who once owned an Apple ][e that is still functioning, well I guess I have high standards! :D

Thank you!

I've gone through 3 macbook pros until I finally got one that didn't do this. The 4 macbook pro has not done it once! (knock on wood). I exchanged it at a completely different store...haven't had a problem since!

If you are experiencing this problem get a new one.

Brightness

Ever since 10.5.3 I have had problems with the brightness randomly changing itself on my MacBook Pro.

I have noticed it does it when I use expose a lot. I have my laptop set to NOT dim the screen to low light or anything and now with 10.5.3 even though the brightness is all the way up it will randomly change the settings. It is crazy, I can sit there are watch it change in brightness back and forth and I have to keep turning it back up all the way, and also the contrast has glitches.

10.5.3 also has glitches where spaces will have the windows fly out to birds-eye view but NOT the blue spaces and vice versa. I have noticed more glitches with 10.5.3 than with any other version of Leopard!

FIX IT APPLE!

This happens to me at least a couple times a week. Though I'm reasonably convinced it's a software issue. Mostly because it never happens when I'm running windows natively. Also it only happens when I unplug the power cord or plug it in. Also sometimes it just turns off the backlighting completely, not just the striping effect.

Cool! It looks like spotlights at a concert. Can we get this as a desktop pattern?

But there are a significant number of people that have, and Apple has yet to even acknowledge the issue.

I have it.

I'm glad it was put on the front page, because hopefully Apple will resolve this issue. Interestingly, I have not had an occurrence since 10.5.3. But we'll see. I don't get it all that often.

In other news, there is a way to supposedly reproduce it using photobooth.

Unplug Mac.
Set brightness to 6 bars below max.
Take photos in photobooth.

The issue happens when the brightness is adjusted, and photobooth appears to be a way to force this (it adjusts brightness to max for a 'flash', before settling back at the user level).
Didn't work for me, but I never tried it when I was having the issue more often.

As the technology advances, the problems increase.

Not that I'm defending them, but I don't get what the big deal is. Every time I've had it (and it isn't too frequent), the control-shift-eject trick works. It takes all of 2 seconds -- literally. Granted, you pay $2K and you expect something to work flawlessly and advertised...but I don't really understand those of you who are spending lots and lots of time getting your machines exchanged and "repaired" over this bug. It just isn't a deal-breaker.

This one has worked fine, EXCEPT for the bluish tint (which I am hoping 10.5.3 will take care of...)

As someone above mentioned it sounds like a colour profile problem. Quite a few people had it with Tiger both with waking from sleep and swapping users. It seemed to quieten down a bit with Leopard, but maybe you've got it back.

The old work around was to load up the Terminal when it happened and run:

/System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/CoreGraphics.framework/Versions/A/Resources/DMProxy

...
LOL, what a cop-out! Ever heard of quality control?
The reality is, that it's Apple's quality control that has gone downhill in the last five years. And fast. It's like saying the sudden shut-down syndrome wasn't apple's fault, that it was the Motherboard manufacturers fault.
...
This is exactly correct. The fact that I'm an apple fan keeps me browsing the boards but at times I feel like I'm reading the writings of clueless fanatics. When the hardware is awesome we have people dropping to their knees expecting that the next apple invention is everlasting life. HOWEVER - When the product quality sucks and has widespread issues, it isn't apple's fault-- it's someone else's!! Whether it is sony, nec, doesn't matter-- but not apple!! Nooooooo!!!!! They aren't responsible for QA-- just awesomeness.

apple is about profit, just like every corporation. QA can and has gone downhill for them, too.

Put a high end Sony, NEC or View Sonic next to the cinema display & you will see a better image (brighter & more consistent color). However the cinema display frame or bezel in nicer...but that's about it....

I only buy apple for the os, their displays suck....

You forgot to say, "in my opinion". Don't get all crazy with the absolutes, now.

Reporting the Issue

Mine does this! Where would a user report such an issue to apple? Is there a URL that we can submit issues?

:apple:

I've had the striping issue (very faintly, hardly noticable) once, when I was showing off to a friend the auto-dim feature, by covering and uncovering the light sensors rapidly so it would constantly dim and undim. Its def. to do with the change in brightness.

I've also once had the backlight go out completely, when the screen should have just dimmed for inactivity.

With both cases closing the lid and sleeping for a second restores things to normal (I didn't know about control-shift-escape until today!).

I'm on a current gen 15" MBP (bought late March).

Im hoping that new designs can fix some of their QA issues. This is a PRIME example.

I am hoping they slow their roll with the new products, and pouring so much time into the ****ing iPhone. WHO CARES...it's a PHONE...I realize they wanted to revolutionize the mobile industry, and they seem to be doing it, but at the cost of QA on everything else.

My parents were one of the folks who had the Aluminum iMac 24" with the faulty graphics card...They bought it 2 weeks after it came out. We'll just say I contacted sjobs@apple.com and the issue was resolved within a month and a half. If you have this problem (the one from this thread, not the iMac issue obviously) I suggest you do it too.

I can't really go into a lot of detail (and i know that sounds shady, but I've got no reason to lie about this), but I had a TON to do, from the end user side of things, with getting it fixed for everyone in the community. They work on the stuff that's wrong, but really it's the executive relations team that needs to be contacted to get results. Its hard because they have so many people working on developing OS X and iPhone and stuff...

The fact that they are taking time off from adding new features they end up not delivering into an OS, and developing Snow Leopard, which focuses on getting Leopard up to snuff is a VERY good thing.

I hope now that iPhone 3g is out, they'll slow it down, take a step back, see how much their quality has gone downhill, and start to address that...

My powerbook is the best machine I've ever owned. So unbelievably rock solid. 4 years old.
