I purchased a MBP 15" three weeks ago and this happened to me one time about 3 days after purchase...it was after the machine had been on for a long time without rest. I was restarting it when it occurred. Hasn't happened since.
I bought a new MBP 2.5 the first day it was released (I know, I know... but my PBG4 died a few hours before and I was desperate).
I had the "vertical stripes" issue over and over, as well as many other annoying issues (a kernel panic right out of the box! never a good sign...), mysterious crashing, HDs that wouldn't mount. Also an issue where suddenly after sleep the screen was imbued with a bluish tint.
After 6 weeks, I'd spent so much time with Applecare on this that they escalated me to a product specialist who told me there was an "open capture" on this model -- meaning they knew there were some kind of issues with this generation and they wanted it back. I went back to the same Apple Store and got a new(er) one. This one has worked fine, EXCEPT for the bluish tint (which I am hoping 10.5.3 will take care of...)
Thoughts, anybody?
The 17 has not made the switch to LED. Just the 15 and the macbook air.
I've already resigned myself to the fact that my 8-year-old "Sawtooth" G4 will probably be the most reliable, most well-built computer I'll ever own.
Front page news? Wow.
I guess it happens, but I don't have any of these issues.
Cool! It looks like spotlights at a concert. Can we get this as a desktop pattern?![]()
But there are a significant number of people that have, and Apple has yet to even acknowledge the issue.
As the technology advances, the problems increase.I've said it before and I'll say it again - there has been a noticeable quality drop off from Apple since the beginning of the G4/iPod era.
If either of these products contributed to it I know not, all I know is before Apple started to place more emphasis on translucent plastics and cool colors, their machines held up a lot better.
Yes, I'm sure there's a handful of pre 2000/2001 technical issues you can dig up (exploded batteries, etc), but it seems like since 2001, not a product release goes by with a considerable amount of issues reported. There may have been problem models back in the days of beige, but never across the entire product line.
Now, this might just mirror changes in the computer industry in general - or even the broader consumer electronics market - but it seems like a very clear line in the sand between the Pre-PPC/PPC/G3 era and the G4/G5/Intel era.
This one has worked fine, EXCEPT for the bluish tint (which I am hoping 10.5.3 will take care of...)

Just a warning to those experimenters and kids that don't listen to our parents (me).....
DON'T TRY THAT KEY SEQUENCE AT HOME w/ YOUR MAC PRO or G4 or G5!
And if you do, please hit the "ESCAPE" key to get your Cinema Display or 3rd party LCD back to life.![]()
As the technology advances, the problems increase.![]()
This is exactly correct. The fact that I'm an apple fan keeps me browsing the boards but at times I feel like I'm reading the writings of clueless fanatics. When the hardware is awesome we have people dropping to their knees expecting that the next apple invention is everlasting life. HOWEVER - When the product quality sucks and has widespread issues, it isn't apple's fault-- it's someone else's!! Whether it is sony, nec, doesn't matter-- but not apple!! Nooooooo!!!!! They aren't responsible for QA-- just awesomeness....
LOL, what a cop-out! Ever heard of quality control?
The reality is, that it's Apple's quality control that has gone downhill in the last five years. And fast. It's like saying the sudden shut-down syndrome wasn't apple's fault, that it was the Motherboard manufacturers fault.
...
Put a high end Sony, NEC or View Sonic next to the cinema display & you will see a better image (brighter & more consistent color). However the cinema display frame or bezel in nicer...but that's about it....
I only buy apple for the os, their displays suck....
