I'd like to see the new MBP take some cues from the new Centrino 2 based Sony Vaio Z series. They cram a 1600x900 display into 13.3 inches (I know its 16x9 and not 16x10, but still higher than current resolution 15" MBPs), BD, a Sprint card, a GeForce 9300M with an option to switch to an IGPU, 6+ hour battery, option for 128gb raided SSDs, carbon fiber/aluminum case, and the list goes on.

Sure, some might not dig the chiclet keyboard, but I'd rather have that than my PB G4 with keys popping off every once in a while. It's pricey, but so is a top of the line MBP. The only reason I'm not hitting Add To Cart right now is because it has Vista.

If Sony can cram this all into a 1" package, I would bet that Apple could do it in less - especially since it would have 15" or 17" of diagonal real estate (unlike 13 for the sony). Any thoughts?

hot swap drives were amazing with the G3 powerbook. God that was so useful. Those are kind of a thing of the past though, with the exception of Alienware talking brainwashed kids into buying their useless ****.

I have a feeling Apple will continue the current resolutions until resolution independence comes to the OS (Snow Leopard? 10.7?).

I have another feeling that Apple won't provide a 1680*1050 resolution option on the 15.4" MacBook Pro because it has a higher DPI than the 17" MacBook Pro's 1680*1050 resolution. Same with MacBooks and 1440*900.

Here's what I'd like to see:

-bring back a 12" model, stripped down similar to MBA but make an external wirelessly accessed optical drive with it's own battery so I can just leave it in my backpack while I use it.

I have been heralding the needed return of a 12/13 in MBP spec'd machine for some time. I would scarf that puppy right up! :apple:

Hallelujah to that!
12"PB = still the best apple notebook of all time, no contest.
Notebooks should be portable as possible. Bring it back baby, bring it on back, all trimmed down with an external optical and a mighty battery.

But the Mac Pro isn't mobile...

What I am trying to say is, you cant get all this into a laptop without making it 5 inches thick. You will have to wait a few years. If anybody wants speed, graphic performance, and HD drive....go buy a MacPro, not a MBP.

And for.Chris....I would really love to know where you get your information from. Sure, there are plenty of Notebooks with Blu-Ray...but they ALL GET HORRIBLE BATTERY LIFE. Apple will not put anything in their computers that weaken their battery life, Macs are known to have great battery life.

Amen! I love my 12" PB, and was waiting for something like it that is Intel powered. MBA does not meet those needs. :(

this will be fun..

docking station
at least 4 USB ports
at least 2 FW400 ports
i am okay with 1 FW800
13" / 15" / 17"
13" model has no optical, works with MBA drive

specs of the 13"
2.1 GHz
SSD standard
(64, 128, 256)
additional battery that connects to the back for 10 Hour battery life!

All of what we are wanting does not involve something 5" thick. In fact, it doesn't even have to be as big as the iMac, which is nowhere near 5".

Extreme processors: +10 W
Better GPU: +10~15 W
(And many of us don't need both of the above.)
Bigger HD:
000009.5 mm (.37") -> 12 mm (.47") (typically 12 mm stays one step ahead of 9.5 mm in size): +2.5 mm (+.098")
00000Dual 9.5 mm HDs (doubles HD storage) (.75"): +9.5 mm (+.37")

From what others have said, this wouldn't even require a 1.5" laptop.

What I am trying to say is, "go buy a Mac Pro" is a cop out when the MacBook Pro can be redesigned to accommodate these without making it too thick.

Extreme Processor is a complete joke and Apple never put any extreme processor in due to heat...

GPU generates more heat than the CPU.

If you want speed from your HD...go buy a 10,000RPM Raptor or a 7200RPM 16MB Cache drive.

An extreme processor would not work, and any GPU that is "High end" is too hot. Take a look at these HP computers, http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/series_can.do?storeName=computer_store&landing=notebooks&a1=Category&v1=Entertainment%20powerhouse#CTO_CAN They all have everything that people want. You can get up to 2.8GHz Extreme, Blue-Ray, and some other crap. Its over 1.5" thick and over 7lbs. The other one is over 2" and 15lbs. HP wanted to pack their computers and they did this by making it big and ugly.

Again....if you want performance and all that...go buy a MacPro.

Again... still missing the point.

What's so ugly about the new HP (and Sony) laptops?

I mean really, there's nothing "disgusting" about them. Is .5" really that big of a deal?

People that sacrifice performance on a PRO laptop (stop complaining about the thickness and buy a regular MB, thats what you need) for the sake of "pretty" and "thin" are stupid. People like you that disagree with any mention of changing the MBP to anything that is closer to earning its hefty price tag, due to brand loyalty, are the reason why most people hate mac users.

Again... still missing the point.

The iMac is also a desktop, and its thicker (1.21" at its thinnest point).

I have been talking about speed since my first post...

"I agree with you. I think if people want speed, graphic performance, and hard drive size; why would you buy a MBP? I know, the MBP is a "Pro" computer so it should handle everything. People that need top end GPU and speed shouldnt buy a MBP, buy a MacPro. I think if Apple put a SSD in the MBP, it would be cool but a total waste of money. With the money you would spend, you could buy a Mac Pro!"

I dont see how I am "Missing the point." I made the point. You cant cram all this into a laptop and keep its size. Making the MBP thicker would be a step backwards. If you put an Extreme into the MBP, it would run even hotter and more people would complain about the heat. The iMac is also bigger in size so it can dispense heat, unlike the MBP.

I would love to see all of this in a laptop, but you simply cannot at this point in time, especially in a 1" thick computer.

Oh please. The 1" limitation is the problem.

To who? Those people who value obsessive thinness over performance in a pro laptop?

Why would you ever make it thicker!! The 1" thickness has been a selling point since the Aluminum PowerBook came out! There are not many computers out there that are 1" thick and pack power. I dont see why people would ever want a computer that is over 1.5" thick and weighs over 7lbs!! Computer companies wish they had a design like the MBP....instead of style they just put all this crap in it, then when they do the measurement they notice that its 2.5" thick and over 10lbs. "Oh please."

Yep, so... Apple. As much as people want to see a size increase, it won't happen as long as Steve's alive.

Heck, he's even gotten on the "thin" bandwagon.

Montevina Mac Pro:

15/17, NO 12 or 13
Add 1 USB to each model
Swap FireWire 800 for FireWire 3200 (backwards compatible with 800 and the 400b)
9600 or comparable ATI
NO Blu-ray, therefore NO HDMI
eSATA... MAYBE.

You know that I'm right... and the extra USB, FireWire 3200, and eSATA are WISHFUL thinking.

I agree, A pro laptop shouldn't have a 1" limit, a pro laptop should be focused on power not looks, (to a point).

Why would you ever make it thicker!!
For more performance!! Have you been missing this? I mean, why is the MacBook Pro 1" instead of .16"~.76" like the MacBook Air? Surely they don't want to make it thick!

The 1" thickness has been a selling point since the Aluminum PowerBook came out!
Make the MacBook thin then. It's not like the MacBook Pro is Apple's only laptop.

I dont see why people would ever want a computer that is over 1.5" thick and weighs over 7lbs!!
The current MacBook Pro is 5.4 lbs. and making it thicker wouldn't increase the weight as much as you think it would. Remember there will be a lot more empty space in there, which weighs... 0 lb!

Computer companies wish they had a design like the MBP....instead of style they just put all this crap in it, then when they do the measurement they notice that its 2.5" thick and over 10lbs. "Oh please."
Oh please. We are not asking for 2.5" and 10 lbs. Read my earlier post.

I agree, A pro laptop shouldn't have a 1" limit, a pro laptop should be focused on power not looks, (to a point).
The CONSUMER and THIN-AND-LIGHT laptops can be sub-1" for all I care. But keep the PRO laptop powerful.

Making the MB thinner would compete with MBP sales. Also, its made of plastic and the screen top is thicker.

Oh please. Stop exaggerating. Im not

The Pro laptop is currently powerful. How is it not powerful? Because it doesnt pack all the crap that you want? It hasnt had a revision since February.

Apple will never make the MBP thicker...ever. Enough said.

It's not powerful enough.

Apple will never make the MBP thicker...ever. Enough said.
Oh, so Apple's lineup is absolutely perfect, and can never be improved.

And since when did I say Apple would make the MacBook Pro thicker?

Making the MB thinner would compete with MBP sales.
So make the MacBook Pro better (making it thick isn't the only way of doing this)! The same thing happened with the iMac and Mac Pro.

Also, its made of plastic and the screen top is thicker.
It's going aluminum soon, according to rumors.

The MBP is made of aluminum...aluminum is heavy. It would be over 6lbs. That is something Apple wouldnt do.
I'm curious. How much does 23.6 square inches of aluminum weigh? I'm sure it's a lot less than 5.4 lb.

Then go get a Dell.
Maybe Apple should just scrap the MacBook and MacBook Pro and just have the MacBook Air. Happy? I mean, you can always buy a Dell.
