what if the 13" MacBook Pro will be positioned below the MacBook Air and will be just the "MacBook" ?
On this way the MacBook LineUp would be identical to the iPad lineup:

iPad / MacBook (entry level)
iPad Air / MacBook Air (most portable with actual big enough screen size)
iPad Pro / MacBook Pro (best perfomance)
iPad mini / ?? MacBook mini ?? (smallest versions, may we will see an 11 or 12 inch MacBook mini in the Future)

It's possible but I would also expect to see a new Air with an M2 too and the new iMac 24" to be updated with it, it they won't be as powerful as the M1 Pro or Max.
Still this is Digitimes so a moot point anyway as no doubt it's false.

There is no way an M2 is coming out 3-4 months after the M1 Pro.

What's the logic here?

If the M2 is more powerful than the M1 Pro / Max. It pisses off the pros who just bought it.
If the M2 is less powerful than the M1 Pro / Max is makes the M2 look weak.

It's marketing 101, this isn't happening

Sorry but there is no way that Apple is releasing the M2 this quickly seeing as the new 14/16 MBP's just came out a few months ago. From a consumer prospective, most people will think the M2 is above any and all M1 chips so that could make things weird having an "entry" level MBP with a newer, 'better' chip slotting below the larger MBP models.

I will say, though, outside of minor updates to some of Apple's more niche products, why even have an event in March anyway? We're not getting new Macs, that much is obvious. If all we're going to see is some new accessories (maybe) and a 5G iPad Air and iPhone SE then couldn't Apple just quietly update the store instead? Why all the fanfare over these quaint devices?

Pro means for professional, I guess there are different level of being pro.

I can live making video or I can work for Holywood....very different scenario and requirements.

Also, it's a marketing thing, people read pro and assume it's better......heck we have "Pro" phones and....

I think many "Pro" user would be good with the "entry level".

What does make something Pro or not.... it's so borderline, I see lots of pro users running base model machines.

Agree.
While an obvious marketing term to indicate ‘more capable,’ I think ‘pro’ is intended to speak more to the components of the device and less to the human using said device (though it seems common that many assume the label speaks to the person). As is proven on a daily basis, having a ‘pro’ tool does not make one a ‘pro.’

Considering that a lot of us are still waiting for our M1 Max 16” ordered around launch week I highly doubt the M2 will make its debut first half -22.
New ETA for my delivery is late march (6 months, yay). So, by all means bring on the M2 and I’ll cancel the M1.

If this is true and they remove the Touch Bar, what distinguishes an entry-level MacBook Pro from the MacBook Air? Good riddance to the Touch Bar, but at least it was a "feature" that the MacBook Air didn't have. If Apple gives a 13" MacBook Pro the ports of the higher-end MacBook Pros (HDMI, SD Card, MagSafe), it would be a must-buy for me. I don't need the processing power of the M1 Max, but I do need the ports.
Same.
Drop the ‘Air’ and give me a ‘MacBook’ that has same ports as pro, minus the performance that comes with the ‘pro’ price tag, and I’m hitting Buy immediately.

It would be great if M2 was even more power-efficient, and not just more powerful.

Wow how come you are waiting for this long. My wait is 6-8 weeks and I am already bored.

You will cancel an M1 Max order for an M2 just because of a number in the naming?

You will disregard the fact that an M1 Max will still be a more capable chip than an M2?

If thats the case you never needed the M1 Max in the first place.

Among other things; I fail to believe a new MacBook Pro is being released just 3 months after the last one. If I had bought the 2021 model, I’d be fuming.
If a laptop is coming out next month, I think Digitimes has the ‘pro’ part wrong. It’ll be a MacBook Air update. And maaaaybe they drop the ‘Air’ moniker altogether in favor of ‘MacBook.’ And/or, they’re wrong about M2. I’m 90% certain I’m 100% wrong.

If there’s a new chip this soon, then I have two guesses as to what it might be:
- M2, with new architecture, maybe on a new process. Ironing out whatever new process they’re using in advance of M2Pro and M2Max in the desktop machines, as M1Max isn’t going to cut it for a full fledged Mac Pro (unless they start throwing 2x or 4x M1Maxes into a Mac Pro).
- M1x, which would be on the same process and architecture as the M1, but maybe run a little faster or have more graphics cores. An updated M1x could also allow for more TB lanes or more RAM, which are both pretty anemic in M1.

I think an M1x situation is more likely. A high volume machine like the MBP13 wouldn’t be the right one to test the waters for a new M2 chip - that should go to something like an iMac Pro, which is lower volume. Additionally, aside from the fan, what’s the reason for the MBP13 right now, anyway? An M1x would differentiate it from the MBA (additional TB ports and options for 32gb RAM), while minimally impacting the 14” and 16” models from a marketing perspective.

Personally, i’d consider a 13mbp with 4TB ports, MagSafe, 10 graphics cores, and 32gb of RAM.

it has been said many times on these forums so please guys understand that M2,3,4,5 etc. will not beat Mx Pro/Max generation earlier. In fact, most likely even M3 won't beat M1 Pro/Max. Sure single core it will but we don't get these machines for single core stuff.

M2 will come and will come soon and we will have products that are M2 and we will have products that are M1 Pro/Max and thats fine.

Pro/Max is different league entirely so relax.

Also:

P.s.: There was a time when MBP were updated 2x a year sometimes so technically even if Apple did M2 Pro/Max in March/April it would still be fine (won't happen but it would be ok)

It feels a little early for the M2, but if the iMac Pro is gonna come with the M2 Pro/Max then it would make sense for the base M2 to debut on the next gen 13” MacBook Pro

Thought the redesigned Air would be released first. Entry level Macbook Pro should be costlier than $1299 assuming the redesigned Air will be priced higher than $999

If M2 comes then M2 Pro and Max would be right behind it which is probably what people fear. Of course technologies will keep evolving but people who buy expensive stuff suddenly wish the technology slows down once they buy their product.

At present, the supply of M1 PRO/ MAX is in short supply. Due to the shortage of chips, Apple will announce the emergence of M2 chips when many people do not get them. I think this possibility is 0. If the M2 is released, it will greatly affect the current sales of MacBook Pro. I don't think Apple will do this.
m2 is build in another mfg line since its 4nm, it won't interfere with the current m1 5nm mfg line.

"Entry level Pro Model" a sentence that should not even exist. Either something is a "Pro" or it is not.
By that logic we only need a $10,000 Mac Pro and nothing else.

In my book "Pro" should signal "this is more than you need" to the average consumer. Professionals still need different levels of performance.

Are we no longer expecting a 14” MBP with M2?

Making a redesigned 13” entry level MBP alongside a redesigned presumably 13” MBA seems pretty wasteful. Seems like it would make more sense to reuse the 14” chassis with maybe some cheaper options (like no promotion) and put an M2 in that.

I just want a 14” MBP with the same legendary battery life as the M1 (non-pro) laptops plus the ability to support multiple external displays. I don’t need crazy CPU/ graphics performance. I need ports and battery life. I can’t be the only one for whom the current 14”/16” MBP are overkill but the MBA isn’t quite enough (mainly cause of ports/lack of external display support).
