Pro means for professional, I guess there are different level of being pro.

I can live making video or I can work for Holywood....very different scenario and requirements.

Also, it's a marketing thing, people read pro and assume it's better......heck we have "Pro" phones and....

I think many "Pro" user would be good with the "entry level".

What does make something Pro or not.... it's so borderline, I see lots of pro users running base model machines.
The marketing department sells more upgrades to the amateur this way.

Well, that is also not true. The gap between M2 and M2 Pro/Max (and any subsequent versions) will probably be at least 6 months if not longer. Also, those customers that need M2 don't really care about M2 Pro/Max and vice versa.

Intel was doing the same thing for decades and no one really cared. Its the same here. ;-)

If M2 comes then M2 Pro and Max would be right behind it which is probably what people fear. Of course technologies will keep evolving but people who buy expensive stuff suddenly wish the technology slows down once they buy their product.

I think they should return to the origins and this model should be called "Macbook", "Macbook" for all the 13" versions (including Air) and "Macbook Pro" for 14" and 16"
Returning to the origins means calling it the PowerBook.

The MacBook Air would be the PowerBook Duo.

Seems highly unlikely they'd debut the M2 this early when there are still models that are awaiting transition to an M-series chip. I think more likely we'll see the M1 Pro and Max move into additional systems like the larger iMac and higher end Mac mini, then we'll see the M2 chips released. Something like:

Spring 2022: M1 Pro/Max 27" iMac, Mac mini, smaller Mac Pro

Summer 2022: M2 MacBook Air, "Base Model" MacBook Pro

Fall 2022: M2 iMac, redesigned lower-end Mac mini

Spring 2023: M2 Pro/Max 14" & 16" MacBook Pro refresh

The big question mark is the Mac Pro and whether it will introduce a new chip type such as the rumored Jade2C/4C dies and when that would be released. I'd also wonder whether Apple will maintain its 18 month update cadence or tighten that up as the chip shortages ease, especially if Intel starts gaining on them in terms of performance.

Seems to me that if Apple is going to release more expensive Macbook Airs instead of replacing the current Airs with those models, that those models should be the gap between consumer and pro. They should come in colors but also in dark gray and able to be custom configured with M1, M2, and M1 Pro to meet all price points between consumer and prosumer. Unfortunately because of cooling needs, a fanless macbook air would only be able to run an underclocked M1 Pro. But they didn't mind underclocking the heck out of the intel chips in airs in the past so why stop now?

Isn’t this debatable. M1 was supposedly based on A14 and M2 is supposed to be based on A15. These are 5nm chips. A16 is rumored to be 4nm.
There have been varying rumors on this front. One such rumor is that the M series will be based off of even-numbered A series chips (much like the X variants before) with Macs being updated roughly every 18 months. The M2 would therefore then be based on the upcoming A16 microarchitecture and the 4nm process node. If the M2 doesn't debut until summer/fall then the timing works out as A16 production would be up and running by then.

I hope this is false, I was about to drive 30 miles today to get a 14 Pro because I need a machine and I’m tired of waiting for the iMac and the M2 Air and concluded there was no way in hell it would release this spring.
MacRumors have been sharing some nice deals lately. You might as well save some money. I don’t see an iMac or Air coming during the Spring event. It’s probably going to be during the summer and fall at the latest.

They can barely get the M1 chips out the door and these guys think the M2 is coming next month? Yeah right.
Exactly. Im still waiting to pick mine up in the store.

They're not going to push out any M2 models, portables especially, if they can't keep up with M1 Pro/Max models.

Are we no longer expecting a 14” MBP with M2?

Making a redesigned 13” entry level MBP alongside a redesigned presumably 13” MBA seems pretty wasteful. Seems like it would make more sense to reuse the 14” chassis with maybe some cheaper options (like no promotion) and put an M2 in that.

I just want a 14” MBP with the same legendary battery life as the M1 (non-pro) laptops plus the ability to support multiple external displays. I don’t need crazy CPU/ graphics performance. I need ports and battery life. I can’t be the only one for whom the current 14”/16” MBP are overkill but the MBA isn’t quite enough (mainly cause of ports/lack of external display support).
just get the double binned 14” then?

why MR reports on DigiTimes is beyond me. I’ve been on this site for over 15 years. DigiTimes is ridiculously unreliable and just annoying at this point. Bet my left whatever that there’s no M2 MBP next month. ?
I agree. They are the worst and MR keeps giving them credibility. Usually as soon as I see it from DT I just move on and don't even read the article.

I would agree that the 13" should just be a "MacBook"
13" MacBook Air - No fans
13" MacBook - Fans
14" / 16" MacBook Pro

Keeps things simple. It seems silly to have both a 13" and 14" Pro laptop.

Make it so the "Pro" version is avail with the MX Pro and MX Max chips, where as Air/MB are the regular MX series chips.

Not that Apple is going to read this or gives a crap what we think about their naming schemes lol.

The M2 MacBook Air & M2 13" MacBook Pro should be Apple's first Macs with Wi-Fi 6E support !

Currently using an Early 2015 13" MacBook Pro, & it has served me well, but will pivot to the M2 version of the same when it's Released, if it includes support for Wi-Fi 6E.

The iPhones out in Sept should include support for Wi-Fi 6E.

What on Earth is Apple doing dropping an M2 MBP merely 3 months after the M1Pro/Max MBPs dropped?!

Insane if true, but highly doubtful.
