Today, Apple delivered LED backlit displays to the 15" MacBook Pro. Apple's plan to use LED displays was revealed in May.

Gizmodo was able to get some answers from Apple about the new LED displays:

- The 15" LED MacBook Pros extends battery life 30-60 minutes when compared to the older MacBook Pros. This includes battery savings from the LED itself as well as the new Santa Rosa chipset.
- Instantly at full brightness, no warm-up necessary, unlike traditional LCDs.
- Same brightness and color range.
- Only 15" LED displays currently available, so 17" LEDs will come later.

Our MacBook Pro forums are abuzz with early photos, comments and reactions to the latest MacBook Pro.

All 17" LED screens are currently being used to prop up the wobbly-legged oak table in Steve Jobs's Kitchen...

Also, LED screens will stay brighter longer over the years, not yellowing like conventional fluo LCDs, right? And they won't burn out and go dead as soon?

That's the #1 BIG advantage I've heard of. I like my laptops to stay useful for a long, long time.

I'd like to know what benefits to battery life Santa Rosa gives the MBP's.

this is interesting me to the point where i may well upgrade my MBP, just to have the uniform, instant brightness.. and my MBP is only three months old

Anybody have a prediction about when the MacBook and the 17" MacBook Pro will get the LED display?

I think the 17" LED's will come out before year end. I don't see the Macbook getting them til next year though.

I'd of said next year for both, when the MacBook's get SR and the Pro's get the next generation of chips, and thus the lines are split now.

So probably January (MWSF).

Uh where does Apple say they use LED? I just checked the tech specs and didn't see anything.

as for the visual difference.

I had the new one side to side with an instore old model (a 2.33) this afternoon. We opened www.google.com on both screens and maximized it.

In order to make the white as dull/grey on the LED as the LCD, I had to turn it down 3 bars or 4. It was about 3.5 i'd guess that the whites looked the same from the top range of the new ones. It was a brilliant improvement. Not something everyone will notice, but I LOVE IT!!!

I ordered mine CTO tonight.

dont you mean macbook PROS with 7 hours of battery life? :D

Either way it's a fantasy. We all know Apple's battery life numbers are optimistic at the very least, and deceptive at worst. My C2D MBP is usable for 2.x hours, maybe 3. To get the promised numbers it would have to be sitting completely idle with the screen off. I'll have to see real benchmarks before I believe that Apple really extended the battery life 30-60 minutes.

Perhaps, but I have yet to see a laptop screen go before the machine needs to be updated anyway. Same for stand-alone LCD monitors. I think fading, color shifts, and overall lifetime of current LCD technology is very good, and even conventional displays probably have much more longevity than the computers that drive them. I might be interested in a standalone LED backlight because that might have to survive multiple computer updates, but on a laptop I think it matters less. The power savings and immediate full brightness are more important IMHO.

Just call up 133 622 from Australia Melbourne and they told me that both 15" and 17" 2.4GHz MacBook Pro comes with the LED display. I am lost here on this post.

Eeeh. I agree the Apple numbers are just for typing text, but even my powerbook 1.25 gets an easy 2.5 hours working "normally" ie wifi and a few apps running like Photoshop / Dreamweaver / Safari. I easily get ~ 3hours writing notes at school with the keybord lit and the screen at 4 or 5 bars.

I would like to hear some real word time tests though. Makes me really want to upgrade.
