30-60 minutes? Meh for some reason I thought it was gonna be more than that.

This update wasn't bad, but I don't feel like I'm missing anything with my current MBP

Not only is it a "greener" solution, but it saves significantly on battery life when coupled with the SR chipset - that's great!

Just call up 133 622 from Australia Melbourne and they told me that both 15" and 17" 2.4GHz MacBook Pro comes with the LED display. I am lost here on this post.

I went to the apple store today (near me of course) and the guy there that I talked to said that the 17" had LED as well... I can't say personally as they didnt have any new MBPs on display but they did have them in stock :(

They're wrong - simple as that.

Not too impressed with the battery boost - come on, only 30-60 minutes? And what about in real life?
What I like the most is the ability to instantly come to full brightness - that is neat.
In the meantime, I'm still very happy with my current MBP.

Perhaps, but I have yet to see a laptop screen go before the machine needs to be updated anyway.

I have. My PowerBook G3 is a great system for my grandmother... but it has gone so dim that she has to use it with her TV. Meanwhile my primary Mac when traveling is a PowerBook G4 closing in on 4 years old. When I retire it, it will still see occasional use and make a fine mobile DVD player. currently it's not bad, but it IS a bit yellower and noticeably dimmer than when I bought it. And recalibrating to reduce the yellow results in even lower brightness.

A Core 2 Duo today is going to be a great system for many purposes in 5-6 years. I'm glad that now the display will still be bright!

well at current http://www.apple.com/au/macbookpro/specs.html is not clear on which model has the LED-backlight.

Display’s the thing
"A great video processor powers a great display. The new MacBook Pro is available in 15-inch models with a new mercury-free, power-efficient LED-backlit display and a 17-inch model with an optional 1920-by-1200 pixel display."

is misleading for those who didn't read the press.

Perhaps, but I have yet to see a laptop screen go before the machine needs to be updated anyway. Same for stand-alone LCD monitors. I think fading, color shifts, and overall lifetime of current LCD technology is very good, and even conventional displays probably have much more longevity than the computers that drive them.
My Silicon Graphics LCD is 8 years old and stills works perfectly, and looks better than anything else I've seen under $4k. No dead pixels, yellowing, or any visible degradation. It is as beautiful as ever.

Like you, for me the appeal of LED lies in decreased power consumption.

i've never noticed that my LCD has a warm-up time to get to full brightness:confused:

It's very subtle but it's there. I'm guessing if you asked the average person they wouldn't of noticed, but it exists nonetheless.

What Im wondering about are colors. I've heard that LED displays aren't up to par with LCD's? This is just what I've read though (on these forums somewhere actually), but I have no idea what the situation is.

Pulling my 2001 vintage G4 TiBook out of sleep in the middle of the night durring the winter (i.e. 60 F degrees in the house) to double check something, the display almost doubles in brightness over 5 minutes, noticeable in a dark room. At 80 degrees in the middle of the day it's hard to notice.

instant brightness is the big seller for me. i think in a few months they be another mbp update with blu-ray drives a the 17 inch led. i just really hope they look good. im quite excited to see one in action

I've been wondering that myself. White LEDs aren't yet able to provide full sprectrum white light. This is one of the issues (along with price) that has been holding them back as the replacement for interior lighting. The white LEDs all have a slightly blue cast to them, and it's not consistant from diode to diode. How does this play into being able to do color matching on these screens? In the long run I'm sure this will be solved - the advancements in LED tech are greatly improving each year. But I wonder how these first gen displays will be for color critical work.

Very impressive display—as bright as a 17-inch MBP and brighter than a MB screen. Not as much grain as previous generation screen. Color seems warm and natural, but I'm no color expert. Other forum members would probably be a better judge of the color gamut and whatnot. Overall, fantastic display for me.

But is the color temperature the same? Im mostly interested in that for LED vs LCD. If the LED is too blue or too yellow then its not good, the whiter the white the better.

So many posts, and not one person seems happy!
May I be the first person to say:
WOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOO!!!

These things are AWESOME!!! It came so close to what I was really hoping for! Basically the only thing that could be better is a 512MB GPU, but a 256MB 8600M GT is damn good!

And, best of all, the to 15" MBP is over AU$300 less than the old ones were. Well, at least it is for me. Maybe it's the exchange rate, but whatever it is, That is AWESOME!

So, with ADC, 15" MBP 2.4GHz, 256MB 8600M GT, all for just AU$3030. THAT is cool.

Yay Apple!

And they are lighter, with a really nice boost to battery life. Cheers all 'round.

Gotta get myself one.

Compared to my Fiancee's 17-inch MBP screen, it does have a slight yellow cast. However, I haven't done color calibration yet. Will now compare to the old MB screen. . .

Okay, the MB screen has a pinkish cast to it.

So the 17-inch screen has the whitest white to my eyes, but I don't have a color meter or anything.

Still the 15-inch LED-backlit screen looks good. Better contrast than the MB screen, equal contrast (perhaps a tiny tiny bit more) than the 17-inch and even lighting corner to corner.

Yes, we have a lot of Macs. It happens when you run your own business. . .

Cool and quiet. Even during a two-hour data transfer via FireWire from my last MB, the computer made little noise and didn't get very warm. The MB, on the other hand, was hot and howling like a jet engine. Both were plugged in, the MB was in FireWire disk mode.
FYI, FireWire disk mode tends to result in higher-than-idle operating temperatures and higher fan speeds, so that's not surprising.

I'm glad you're enjoying your new MacBook Pro :)
