Current MB Pro 17" with 2.6 ghz 4 gb ram, and 17" hi-res screen = $3,500 plus tax. This is without Apple care, any other software, accesories, etc. Have to get Applecare seeing as how Apple's GPU will blowup your laptop and could kill you. (They lied and continued to ship them even after knowing to steal more $) They should be getting sued here shortly for billions, hopefully. Anyway, after that you'd be well over $4000.

Their new high end MBP might even be $5,000. Plus all the other little gadgets you need, docks, and applecare, etc. Possibly close to $10,000. All this for weak HP knockoff looking "Pro" machine, with less ports/firewire than a $300 Compaq. There will be no Matte Screen. Perfect for a "Pro." Great job Apple. Sorry if I'm not blind cattle like the rest of you.

I will gladly be enjoying my early 2008 17" mbp for many years to come, this update doesn't appeal to me at all, I was looking for a reason to upgrade but couldn't find one. hopefully the gpu doesnt burn out right after the warranty expires

The joy of free will...you don't have to buy one...for god sakes, you don't have to keep coming on the forum to complain. This is obviously not the computer you want, or want to spend money on. Cool, go buy your HP. This really isn't that complicated.

Let's see if they solve Macbook Pro's biggest problem: electricity on their aluminium case, sometimes painful on skin contact. This is not just my case,I I've heard many reports. Incredible how something like this is allowed to happen.

Selfishly, I'm actually glad the prices didn't come down...that way I can sell my old MBP for a higher amount! I think craigslist is going to have a new post tomorrow.

wow...I've never had that happen to me and I have only used aluminum macs. That sucks. Is it a grounding issue at your location?

Fake!

I'll bet the photos are fake - Somebody has too much unimaginative time on their hands. If you look at the screen resolution - it looks 4-3!

I don't think the bezel will be as big as the Air
I do think the bottom will be more rounded
I do think there will be a magnetic latch
I do think they'll be thinner than today's MBPs
I do believe the specs that are posted

Overall, I think we'll be blown away by their new laptops.

June 2007 MBP user here

this update doesnt appeal to me =)
No reason for me to upgrade.

If the case is indeed true though...I must say, I like my "old" MBP even more hehe

I also hope that have a high res screen - I don't think I could give up my Frankenbook with a 1920x1200 screen - although I could use a new battery.

John Gruber's source is sure letting a lot of info out before the big day.

Most interesting is the new button-less trackpad and the absence of an aluminium entry level MacBook. I can't imagine many folk forking out for the white one when the aluminium one comes out. I wonder how long they'll continue to manufacture a single plastic machine that few will want.

Josh

Still think the new photos are fake.

The actually product tomorrow may look a lot like them, but those pictures themselves got to be fake.

Click on the 2nd photo with the laptop closed and see for your self.

1. The side is clearly a photoshop job as you can see unrealistic smudges to hide the ports near the front

2. The top clearly does not even line up with the bottom

I'm seriously anticipating to be surprised tomorrow!

the removal of firewire isn't such a bad thing. USB 2.0 is faster than firewire by about 80Mb/s. You guys aren't really missing much. the only thing I've noticed a huge difference in is firewire 800. Apple really needs to come out with fw3200 or eSata or something.

No, USB's PEAK speed is 80Mbps faster than FW400. It's this complete lack of understanding of the speed and benefits of FireWire that lead to it not being as widespread as USB, in turn making it cost more, making it less widespread, etc. It would be nice if more peripherals were firewire...

Firewire 400 is considerably faster than USB 2.0

Firstly, USB 2.0's speed is it's "peak" speed, fw400 is a constant transfer speed rather than peaking up and down.

FW400 also had it's own controller so it is not tied to the computer's processor. If you're doing anything major on your machine your data transfer speed suffers greatly with USB 2.0

USB 2.0 can't do upload and download at the same time, it has to throttle up and down constantly. Simultaneous upload and download is a hallmark feature if USB 3.0 which won't be out till 2010.

In real world use, FW400 is superior to USB.

And to the people complaining about not being able to do this or that because of no FireWire, the FireWire port on your MacBook will continue to function even after these are released. Nothing is keeping you from using it. So stop typing in all caps and making  faces because you don't get exactly what you want.

My firewire has died, that's why I wanted a new Macbook.:mad::mad::mad::mad:

no firewire=step backwards

yeah i read that and became sad in my pants. WTF Apple?

i figure if you spend over 1000 bucks you deserve one lousy firewire port on your laptop. plus, i own several "Smartdisk Firelite" firewire only portable drives that i use all the time....

i love Macs, but not cool Steve!

Other features described for the new MacBook Pros include speeds up to 2.8GHz, improved wireless connectivity, 7200 RPM hard drives, HD displays, 128GB SSD option, user-serviceable hard drive and an extra long battery.
Faster HDs and HD displays, about time too. Does that mean 1920·x standard, an option for the 15" (16"), or only on the 17" (18")?

HD displays?!?! Woot! Good time to be a Mac switcher!

I know this was mentioned a time or two already, but it bears repeating.

Every Mac sold today with some sort of display has an HD display. If the smallest number in your resolution is 800 or above, you've got high definition. My 720p television has something like 1300x768.

What some genius "we know everything about electronics" Web site meant to put is probably 1080p or whatever you want to call the computer version of it. I can see that on all MBPs, but I think that's asking a lot for the smaller MBs.

While I'm up late and grumpy (sorry iMacmatician, you're just in the line of fire!), can we stop calling those spinny things that store data HDs? I know they're "hard drives," but I get so confused half the time when reading about "fast HDs" and thinking about what the heck that means and if it's some Blu-ray feature.

As King of the Universe, I dub all hard drives "HDDs" and also dub myself a bazillion dollars so I can not work tomorrow!!!! :)

Is it not correct that Firewire is essential for:

> Using a hard drive as a TimeMachine
> Using an external drive as a boot drive
> Connecting, in any useful way, most High Def camcorders?

Not to mention the apparent better usability of large external FW over USB2 drives?

Surely many, perhaps most, Macbook users rely on one or more of these facilities (ALL the Macbook owners I know have external FW drives they use routinely...)?

Unless there is some new protocol to convert FW400 devices - retaining de facto all the FW capabilities NOW (not in some future OS release...) - it is going to take some serious spin and hoopla from Steve to convince this is anything but a retrograde step to push to persuade some users to jump to the Pro...? If there is something sneaky coming up, then great...but keeping a FW port in the design must cost next to nothing?

no Firewire means I hold onto my current Macbook for LOOOOOOONG Time.

if the new Macbook is without Firewire then it's D.O.A. in my book.
A terrible decision.

>No.
>No.
>Yes.

The dealbreaker here is that FW is not a prereq for Time Machine or booting, it's just faster and more reliable.
It is a problem though with Target Disk between an old mac and a new one.
