I hardly ever use Firewire - but Target Disk Mode is simply to good to give up. It's brilliant and it must stay.
Unless you have do it with USB - but what about the older Macs?

Current MB Pro 17" with 2.6 ghz 4 gb ram, and 17" hi-res screen = $3,500 plus tax. This is without Apple care, any other software, accesories, etc. Have to get Applecare seeing as how Apple's GPU will blowup your laptop and could kill you. (They lied and continued to ship them even after knowing to steal more $) They should be getting sued here shortly for billions, hopefully. Anyway, after that you'd be well over $4000.
Their new high end MBP might even be $5,000. Plus all the other little gadgets you need, docks, and applecare, etc. Possibly close to $10,000. All this for weak HP knockoff looking "Pro" machine, with less ports/firewire than a $300 Compaq. There will be no Matte Screen. Perfect for a "Pro." Great job Apple. Sorry if I'm not blind cattle like the rest of you.
Let's see if they solve Macbook Pro's biggest problem: electricity on their aluminium case, sometimes painful on skin contact. This is not just my case,I I've heard many reports. Incredible how something like this is allowed to happen.
wow...I've never had that happen to me and I have only used aluminum macs. That sucks. Is it a grounding issue at your location?
the removal of firewire isn't such a bad thing. USB 2.0 is faster than firewire by about 80Mb/s. You guys aren't really missing much. the only thing I've noticed a huge difference in is firewire 800. Apple really needs to come out with fw3200 or eSata or something.
And to the people complaining about not being able to do this or that because of no FireWire, the FireWire port on your MacBook will continue to function even after these are released. Nothing is keeping you from using it. So stop typing in all caps and makingfaces because you don't get exactly what you want.

Faster HDs and HD displays, about time too. Does that mean 1920·x standard, an option for the 15" (16"), or only on the 17" (18")?Other features described for the new MacBook Pros include speeds up to 2.8GHz, improved wireless connectivity, 7200 RPM hard drives, HD displays, 128GB SSD option, user-serviceable hard drive and an extra long battery.
HD displays?!?! Woot! Good time to be a Mac switcher!

Is it not correct that Firewire is essential for:
> Using a hard drive as a TimeMachine
> Using an external drive as a boot drive
> Connecting, in any useful way, most High Def camcorders?
Not to mention the apparent better usability of large external FW over USB2 drives?
Surely many, perhaps most, Macbook users rely on one or more of these facilities (ALL the Macbook owners I know have external FW drives they use routinely...)?
