Heavy, heavy, heavy...

Now if they can just drop a few pounds

Great pictures can't wait for the hard drive install.

Does this mean the plastic doesn't disappate heat as well, more contained in the main "chamber?"
Plastic does not dissipate the heat as well as aluminum, but the iBook has always been that way. When I partially took my MacBook apart and peeked inside I noticed a heat pipe going toward the vents by the hinge, plus there is a fan in there, so I don't think the heat is a problem, especially since integrated graphics won't get as hot as, say, a Radeon X1600.

the 14" iBook G4 was 5.9 lbs and the 12" iBook G4 was 4.9 lbs... this 13.3 inch MacBook has more screen real estate than the 14" and weighs 5.2 lbs... what is everyone bitching about here? i don't understand.

Because it is smaller (displacement wise) than the previous 12" model. Personally, I do not feel like the weight is that big of a deal, and I carry my laptop in a briefcase (with a handle).

Very nice... If I can ever stop grumbling about the stupid weight of these things I see a stripped down Macbook with a do-it-yourself upgrade.

Did you see anything else that we could 'throw overboard' to keep the blimp aloft?

Does anyone know if these MB's will come anywhere close to being able to play Battlefield 2? Its the only game I would really care to play, having played it at my bros house.

Proably not. BF2 is pretty killer in the video card department. You could proably run BattleField 1942, Medal of Honor, and Call of Duty 1 no problem though. They run fine on my 4 year old 32mb integrated graphics windows box, so they should run well on the new mac lappy.

It ain't heavy it's my Mac

Keep talking  I *want* to believe, maybe if we can just get some gospel singing goin it will take me over the edge and I *will* believe. :)

Hey I may pickup one of these anyway so I can either really 'bitch' about it or be a convert. Then I'll be singing, "It ain't heavy it's my Mac" And thinking to myself, "Small is Beautiful."

Nice Update. Nothing astonishing but certainly nice. Very neccessary improvements to keep the iBook... ahem.. MacBook competitive. I would have called it extraordinary if it had a one hour longer battery and a video card. But this aint bad. The black from some pictures sort of reminds me of Windows machine, maybe I have to see it in person, but it better be shinier than the pictures. Definetly to me not worth a $200 extra. Its almost the same as the iBook / Powerbook lol b/c those became so ridiculously close in features that the $500 couldnt be justified. It seems Apple is recreating the situation. I doubt they will keep up the difference. I dont thing they can. I think they are merely milking the many excited people who want a Black Macbook, once they see sales trail off I think they will go back to normal pricing. Maybe its just a deterence to the inital rush of Black purchases.

But the real thing I want to know is there is no more closure. Where is the latch? There just seems to be a little fold into the machine. Interesting..

stats

Heck, with all the macbooks ALREADY out in the market why hasn't anyone done any performance tests?

where are they?

No more latches, now held with magnets

Yeah, but it was mini-VGA in the previus iBook not only for size reasons, but also esthetic reasons. a VGA port just looks legacy, like a serial port. Apple is all about dropping legacy technologies before everyone else, and adopting new technologies early. A full size DVI port is on the MBP pro, i dont see the reason to not have a full size one on the MB.

This is very true... I dunno. I think DVI ports are aesthetically displeasing, too, but apparently not so much so to dissuade Apple. The mini plugs seem to work really well... I wish the monitor people would just switch over to them.

I had to see it for myself and just went to my local Apple Store. I apologize if fifty million others have already given their impressions of the MacBook.

The keyboard is very nifty! It has cutouts for each key and has wide spacing. I cannot say that the key-press quality is as good as my 12-inch PowerBook, but it's still very nice. Much better than the flimsy keys on the iBook.

The Apple Store employees were just as stoked as I was and one employee was happy that GarageBand can run something like 20 simultaneous software instruments with echo and reverb. Another employee was trying to run two simultaneous 1080p feeds but was this resulted in choppy playback.

I ran the alpha version of Second Life and it ran surprisingly well, although not smooth-as-silk. It's still useable though.

I've noticed that video playback even via iTunes was much smoother than my 1.5 GHz PowerBook G4. I guess my PowerBook is on its last legs.

What about the speakers?

I alread decided to get a macbook, but I still have a few questions:

How are the speakers? Can you watch a DVD with them? (Not home-theater style, sitting-by-your-desk style :)

How's the performance in WOW in 1280x800 resolution? I have a PC laptop with GMA900, and it's unplayable for anything other than logging on to check your ingame mail. (All resolutions :(

Do the keys actually go down _into_ the case? Seems annoying if true...

If someone can make a little movie of the keyboard in action and put it on youtube, that would be great :)

EXTREMELY INCNSIDERATE OF YOU NOT TO INCLUDE THE LINK TO THE PHOTOS IN YOUR QUOTE. Or at least you could have said what post number they are on. I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO FIND THE ORIGINAL POST FOR AN HOUR in this impossible maze of over 1300 posts and 53 pages. Thanks for nothing Gatezone. It's on post #1299 Page 52 and again on Page 54 by me. Thanks Guys.

Why all the complaining about weight?

The MacBook uses very similar polycarbonate to the iBooks. This casing is quite a bit heavier and thicker than the aluminium casings found on the PB/MBP. Try comparing they weight of a 12" PB to a 12" iBook - PB feels quite a bit lighter. Having said that the PB/MBP cases are quite a bit more expensive than the iBook/MB casing to produce. Furthermore the AL casings often get bent and dented quite easily where as the polycarbonate casings are extremely durable. I have seen a 14" iBook that was directly run over by a car and not a single cracked casing! The only things that failed are:

The LCD cracked due to flex and
The hinge broke

These machines are extremely durable and are aimed at educational markets. I would rather tote some extra weight and have a strong well built machine that can be thrown around (though I never do) than something light and flimsy!

Integrated Graphics a problem?

Not to sound uppity or anything (I have an iBook myself, not a PowerBook), arent Intel Integrated Graphics what you'd *expect* on the MacBook?

Although the Pro may not have it yet, it makes sense to me for the Pro machine to also be the gaming machine, and for the pro to have "really good" graphics capabilities. The MacBook (non-pro) is a student machine; an amateur's machine; a machine to be used in bulk. I'll probably get flamed for this, so apologies for feet on which I may tread, but: although I'm sure it will be standard one day, the machine does not at this time need graphics from ATI or nVidia.

My complaint is that it has a single button without a split for both right- and left-clicking. Curse you, legacy-of-the-one-button-mouse! At least give people a choice! (And not everyone wants to tote about an external mouse.)

Not to say that I wouldn't love for the computer to rely on non-integrated graphics, instead, but... why are people complaining?? It has what you'd expect from a computer at it's level, doesn't it?

Thanx a lot. I need a few more posts like this to make me feel better. I really wanted the black one.Had the money too. But I can get the white only in SF. I either buy it today. Or i`ll be forced to wait two/three months before they hit INDIAN shores.

But I really wanted the Black one.:(
ALLRIGHT. I need a couple more posts like this. Lie if you have to. But say it`s not better than white:eek:

I think the white is better. It is more Apple. Plus, it will show scratches, smudges, fingerprints, etc. less.
