So my question is, will I be able to walk in an Apple Store and ask for a Macbook but with the upgrade to 1gig of RAM?

Thanks In advance all!
Yep. They can do it in front of you in a matter of minutes. :) You can't with HDD though :(

and try not to buy ram from apple....if u notice at the online store, apple is trying to charge $500 for 2 gigs of ram....NO WAY IN HELL!! try to get ram somewhere online and bring it in the store to let them install it.

Isn't there some kind of consumer protection law that protects us from stuff like charging $200 more for a black plastic case?

So I guess we just put up with Apple doing that to us right?

OMG!!!!!!!!!! Are you kidding!! That kind of thing is what destroys a free market economy....which is what our economy is. If you do not like the price than complain to Apple and tell them to change, that's called freedom of speech.... or are you the kind of person that would like that taken away too!?!?!

HFS! I didn't know it was that much! I also noticed the MB RAM is in matched pairs, but the iMac isn't. hmm..

Speaking of the size, if you calculate the volume figures for both the iBook 12'' and MacBook 13'' you'll realize that the MacBook is in fact smaller than the iBook 12''.

2241 cc -> 12'' iBook G4
2028 cc -> 13'' MacBook

That's very interesting gedto. Good nerdy fact. In US Cubic Inches that is:

12.1" iBook = 181.36 cu. in.
13.3" MacBook = 123.12 cu.in.

58.24 fewer cubic inches 67.88% the volume of the iBook  :)
Almost One Third Smaller Volume - Amazing. More In Less.
Over Achiever said:
Wrong.
12.1" iBook = 136.75 cu. in
13.3" MacBook = 123.75 cu. in
That's only 13 fewer cubic inches, mainly due to the fact it's much thinner than the iBook, but 2 inches wider.
14" iBook was 10.2" x 12.7" x 1.4" = 181.356 Cubic Inches

12" iBook was 11.2" X 9.1" X 1.35" = 137.59 Cubic Inches minus 123.12 = 14.47 fewer cubic inches.

So we're both wrong. Make mine 67.88% the volume of the old 14" iBook or 32.12% Smaller.

Black Macbook is really nice

Just saw both MacBooks at the Bridgeport Village store (they brought some of them out). The black one is definitely nicer; it has a matte finish all around and the texture is great. The white one has the glossy iBook finish on the outside and an interesting white matte finish on the inside.

The glossy screen looks basically like the Vaio Xbrite screen. We couldn't carry it outside, but the Sony version is nice, so I wouldn't expect the Apple one to be any less nice.

The widescreen really does make a difference. We used the 12" ones in the store afterwards, and the screens looked too-tall and boxy. Funny, huh?

The matte finish really is great. It's not grainy like the Powerbook/MacBook pro finish; the feel is sort of anodized metallic. I wonder if the scratches/gouges in the case finish will be white or black?

555 MHz ram?

I just replaced the ram in my 1.83 GHz MacBook (for more capacity) and I noticed the ram module that came with the MacBook read:

256MB 1Rx16 PC2-5300S-555-12

Does this mean they're 555MHz ram with CL of 12?

What the He**?

Apple can charge you as much as they want for whatever they want. That's called free market, my friend. They sell, you buy. If you don't like it, then don't buy. ;)

Again, the reason is simple. There's an extra cost in keeping two stock lines of different casings. Apple chose to put that extra cost on black models, to keep the traditional white model at a low price. This way, we white iBookers will have a replacement at a very reasonable price, whilst black MacBook lovers will have to cope with the extra cost of their demand. ;)

Sounds fair to me. ;)

Actually... in a free market, producers are considered "price takers," meaning demand determines the price. In a market where producers determine price, it's called a "monopoly."

It's obviously a race thing, the price premium for the black version. ;)

If I remember rightly didn't Nintendo get fined a HUGE amount for price fixing in the last couple years? Obviously slightly different but just another example of consumers getting shafted by a greedy company.

actually...

Integrated graphics has absolutely ZERO to do with CAD applications. The reason it didn't work out is probably because they were under-equipped in other departments.

Acutally SolidWorks is 3D CAD and is designed to use Open GL in high end graphics accelerators.

So having a video card capable of high 3D performance would really help in this case.

Ive always thought glossy screens were a pain in the ass, at uni all these PC ppl with glossy screeens are constantly cleaning them of fingerprints and adjusting them inside so they dont have reflections of lights etc on the screen.

But apart from that the specs look good.

Consumer protection? Lol.. uh.. if I were you, I'd be more interested in a law that protects us from paying high gas prices instead of a premium for a color.

If you think the $200 is too much.. go to Colorwarepc.com and see how much they charge. The reason Apple charges this $200 for the black color, is probably to do with volume. They figure that they won't sell as many black units as the white ones, so they manufacture smaller quantities of the black ones, as compared to the white units.

Lower production = higher costs. Or, I could be wrong and maybe all the macbooks are manufactured white, and Apple actually has to paint the black ones (as in professionally paint of course, in an automated environment)

I don't know.. just theories.. but stop complaining about having to pay extra for a feature. Yes, color is a 'feature' too.

First impressions of the macbook. B+

I checked out the macbook at my local Apple store tonight! The good news is that they were in stock.

The bad news was there was no crowd around them, about 20 customers in the store.

The design was very slick - too slick. The keyboard is a chicklet style like a waterproof watch might have. I was shocked!

The prices were as high as ever for Apple's. If they could have hit a $999 price point for the black one, I would have purchased it. They missed it by 50%! Way off!

They feel is a bit light weight, but heavy as ever! The thing flexes a little under its own weight.

I'd give it a B+.

At last! Start the whining...

As the 12" PB has been dropped this must be the replacement for it too.

In that case how does the GMA950 compare to what was in the PB?

intel integrated graphics suck plain and simple. however, i think the GMA950 is perfect for the macbook b/c no one buys them to do complicated graphics tasks anyways. im pretty sure the 9700m in the powerbooks is much better than what the macbook has

Technically yes, but not significantly. Barefeats did some tests and found only a 4% difference at best. The good news is you really want 2GB inside and a pair of two 1GB sticks from Omni via Ramseeker are only $144. :)

NOTE: You must search for MacBook Pro ram from pop-up menu at top then click on the Omni Technologies™ Optival® PRICE of $71.99 to get the link to Omni where you will be invited to buy at that price. Any other path to there will cost you more - a lot more. :D

Thanx a lot Multimedia. I`ll get the 1 gb stick for now. It`ll cost me 96$ though(intl delivery). But one thing I`d like to reconfirm. I want to use this with one of the 256 one. I m not sure but will there be any sorta problems if I use them together.

EDIT: WOW. That wud be a very stupid question I think. I`d frist thought that MB uses 555 Mhz RAM(read somewhere in the forums). But just checked the apple site. It clearly states that Both the MB and MBP uses 667 Mhz RAM. So now there should`nt be any probs with that setup I think.

Groan. This is still a brick. Nicely designed with decent features, but only a .4 of a pound different than the Pro... ?

http://www.macworld.com/2006/05/firstlooks/macbookfirst/index.php

i would have expected something a lil lighter since this is apple, but are you really going to complain about lifting 5 lbs? imagine how much more money they would be if apple made them 3-4 lbs

what do you mean by it "flexes a little under its own weight", what does that mean??
