i love my macbook so far. But it does get hot! when it gets too hot, it gets loud with the fan running. my battery hasn't been lasting too long though. i need a way to put this baby to the test. any ideas?

Actually... ImAlwaysRight, would you consider making a stub in the MacGuides Wiki for this? It's really useful information.
I have no clue how to do that. Is that something you can do, or if I need to do it, give a little more info on how to make a "stub." Use the pictures all you want -- that's why I put them on imageshack. And I don't need credit for it either. Keep it anonymous.

I'm curious what you've done with yours so far to make the fan run and get loud.

so wait, I gotta pay $200 more for an extra 20GB and it being black?

Or if you just want the larger hard drive, the upgrade that brings the white mid-level MB to the same specs as the black one is $50. ;)

When I've seen the privacy shields, I guess they wouldn't glare per se, but they seem to attenuate the brightness somewhat. I dunno if they'd really solve the outdoors problem. But I've never seen someone use one outdoors.

It doesnt look as though there are plans to insert any other replacement for the 12 in powerbook, these three are filling the gap on their own I guess.

But that doesnt rule out an even lower entry level subnotebook, so...let me be the first to say,

"MacBook Nano's next tuesday!"

I think that should be "MacBook Ultra"s!

•Play a long movie off the HD, time how long it runs on battery.
•Play a movie in the DVD drive, time how long it runs on battery.
•Repeat the above with Airport off.
EDIT: You could also repeat all those with brightness only at halfway. Total of 8 tests.

Finally:p...Fully charge the thing, shut down, disconnect it from the power and reboot...login and select the lowest display setting, AP+BT off, 'better energy savings' etc and just use it normally...see if it gets anywhere near 5hours (current iBook gets 4h55m)

Has anyone seen a report on how the speakers/sound is? I've read about 3/4ths of the posts in this thread and not seen a report anywhere.

Nothing spectacular. They sound just like the majority of laptop speakers I have used. Will need to wear headphones in any public place or any place with background noise.

also is the white macbook matte or glossy?

Wait, so you couldn't use the search function at the top of every thread to find a few pictures, and someone else is a newbie? Right.

Thanks... I wasn't going to get into it but was wondering the same thing.

They are just ordinary laptop speakers. Mind you I've only heard the Welcome music a few times and nothing else. But they are tiny laptop speakers. They are on the back edge of the MB, where the hinge is, so they bounce off the screen when the MB is open. Nice design, IMHO.

Here are a couple picts, the first taken from the back with the lid mostly closed; the second, taken from the top down at a slight angle with the lid mostly open (notice the nice reflection on the glossy screen  -- but it is a sharp angle and that is what glossy screens do. So far my impression of the screen is that I like it.)

Does anyone know if there is a slot on the side of the macbook to store the remote like the macbook pro?

Chicklets.

I went to the Apple Store to check one out today, I'm slightly dissapointed my old case won't work with it. But the real dealbreaker for me is..

Has anyone else noticed that the Macbook has the keyboard from a Mattel Aquarius, complete with the (lack of) usability of the same?

I'm going to go back sometime later and try to type on when when the store is less crowded and see if it's as bad as I first thought, but I think it'll be MacBook Pro for me.

Do some research before you talk. Intel is coming out with an upgrade to their integrated graphics to 955, but until that comes out and upgrades the integrated graphics youll have to freaking deal.
That said, the 955 is comparable to nvidia 6600, and the 950 isnt far behind.
It is much better than your crap 9200. I have a 9800 pro in my desktop.
However, these are NOT gaming machines (even with boot camp) and a 950 will do more than fine. the 955 will actually make decent gaming a possibility in a few short months.

Are you thinking of the 965? I haven't heard of the 955. I thought I read the 965 is necessary for DX 10.

Where are the laptops for the rest of us...?

I just got home, saw the thread and had to sign up. :)

On the desktop side you have the entry level mini w/the appropriate integrated graphics, the consumer iMac, and the Pro Powermac. Where is the middle of the road laptop? I only see entry level and pro laptops.

I've had to use integrated graphics at work on a number of machines for several years and they just don't have the juice. At home, for my side business, I use my QS G4 and its dated video card for photoshop, illustrator, some casual gaming etc. In my experience all the integrated graphics machines I've used cant do what my old machine can.

Perhaps this intel graphics chip is different, perhaps it can smoke my old machine. Fine. But aren't these books primarily targeted at the school crowd? Arent there many casual gamers in that crowd? As others have pointed out this is not a machine for gaming. So what is up with that? It just doesn't seem to be asking much for the higher end macbook to have a real vid card, to justify a higher price.

I was eagerly waiting for this announcement so I could pick one up and replace my aging QS, with a portable but I'm very disappointed...:(

Weight issue?

Has anyone discovered that the new macbook weighs around 5.2 lb whereas the 15" mb pro weighs around 5.6.

I don't know, but 5.2lb isn't exactly prortable.... BRING OUT the sub 4lb notebook please!

I was wondering where they were at! That's pretty nifty.
