Now schools, they can still buy eMacs. Apple has a whole 15 pages on things that schools can buy, and yessiree they still have the eMacs for schools. As of April 16, 2006 is when the paper was updated. If you want, go to apple.com and search for surplus purchasing or that.

I wonder how soon until they go Intel. Its gotta be this year surely.

Comparison between Radeon 9550 and GMA950

Quite a few people here seems to think that GMA950 is crap when compared to the vid-cards it replaces. Yes, GMA950 is crap when compared to dedicated vid-cards available today (naturally). But what if we compare it to the vid-cards it's replacing in the Mac? When compared to the Radeon 9550, the main differences are these:

Fill-rate

9550: 1 billion pixels/sec
GMA950: 1.6 billion pixels/sec

Memory-bandwidth:

9550: 6.4GB/sec
GMA950: 10.6GB/sec

Those two are the two key-areas that affect performance. And GMA950 is a clear improvement over 9550 on both. Of course you would get even better performance if you used dedicated vid-cards. But GMA950 is a clear step up when compared to the GeForce 5200 Go and Ati Radeon 9550 it replaces.

Is this typical? Not really. Is it unusual? Not that either. Plenty of companies don't pay dividends.

Yep. usually companies that do pay dividens are "old" and "established" companies that aren't growing that fast. Their shareprice remains stable, so paying dividens is a way of making them more attractive for investors.

I remember when MS announed that they are going to pay dividends. many analysts dropped their ratings for MS, because to them, MS had turned from fast-growing company in to a slow-growing "established" company, with stable share-price.

You sure about that? Sims2 is not that graphics-intensive. If GMA950 doesn't handle, then I would point my finger at Maxis.

Erm, it's more graphics intensive than WoW or other games that have been discussed on here. It requires a good graphics card.

How do I remove the RAM?

Problem solved. Pushed bar all the way to left a number of times and RAM finally popped out very slightly, but enough to remove.

Here's a question - is the verdict in on WoW or is the jury still out? I don't intend to play many games on my MacBook, but it'd be nice to have the option to alienate other customers at my local Coffee Shop by doing a ZG run there on my MacBook.

Yep, and when you add in all the simulation that's going on in the game is quite resource demanding.

Another thing to add -

Wireless reception is probably the best out of any laptop I've used - I'm in a part of the house where normally no wireless laptop picks up a signal, and yet in internet connect on my MacBook I've still got 5 bars of signal.

Quality!

Sims2 doesn't really need fast framerate, and I don't really see anything that graphics-intensive in it. If GMA950 can get 20FPS in Half-Life2 using high settings, I honestly can't see why it couldn't handle Sims2 as well.

Argh! Mine hasn't even shipped yet! I ordered it yesterday, and in white, but I think I got boned by having them put in the 120gb hard drive. That custom job is probably going to cost me a good 48 hours at least.

Ah well, I guess I have to maintain perspective. Last week I was frothing at the mouth, impatient that they hadn't even announced the bastard. Now I've got one being customized and soon to be on its way. And in time for summer classes, I might add. Time to be thankful.

Macbook Applecare confusion for UK HE students

I ordered a Macbook through the UK HE site about five minutes after they were announced.

At that time in the Applecare section of the order form the only "tickbox" available was "None" i.e. there was no option to buy Applecare at that time. I believed this meant that HE students got Applecare for free. Looking back on the site today a new tickbox has been added - Applecare for £157.

I phoned the HE helpline to find out what this means. Evidently UK HE students get 1 years phone support and three years warranty on hardware. If you want to upgrade that to full Applecare (i.e. three years phone support) you need to pay the additional £157. You can decide whether that is a good premium for two years phone support. Personally I think that if you are getting the three years warranty for free in any event that I would not spend the extra for additional telephone support.

I was also advised to print off and keep the HE Terms & Conditions in order to prove entitlement to the extended warranty in the future - as they may change in the interim.

Now all I want is for my Macbook to ship - estimated delivery date 6 June :(
