so i guess when you type your elbows don't touch your desk? If yours don't you must look like a total idiot trying to type. Most NORMAL people who type have their elbows touching the desk which the makes the arm and wrist touch the sharp edge of the macbook. It's a design flaw and they've failed to fix it. OP, i know exactly what you mean.....my fiance used to have a macbook and i was surprised they still hadn't fixed it on updates.

Please provide a link to where NORMAL people are instructed to type with elbows touching the desk. :D

^lol.. everytime i try to simulate that i bust out laughing... who types like that rofl. Feels like i'm playing piano or some *****.

hahaha exactly man. these people just need to get off of apple and realize even apple stuff can have a bad design just like anyone else. And the Macbook sharpness is one of them! You have to use the piano type technique so you don't cut yourself hahaha

^ lol um... re read that man... i was talking about typing with your elbows on the desk... sorry.. i totally disagree with you. Thats an absurd way to type. even if there were razor blades on the edge of my mac my hands/wrists never come in contact with it since the heel of your palm should be resting on either side of the trackpad.

Your complaining about a non issue unless you type like a buffoon. In which case i'm glad apple isn't designing keyboards for the buffoon user in mind. And i'm not a die hard mac supporter.. i just disagree with you on this issue.

if you type in the 2nd picture it looks like you have shoulder problems. I haven't seen one person not type with their elbows on the desk. Desks are made like that so you can do that....they aren't made so you jack your arms up in the air and look like you are typing on a piano at all times.

I personally don't have any problems with edges while typing. Its using the trackpad for extended periods of time. There really is no easy way to not be bothered by the edges, especially the one facing upward that will cut into your palm/wrist. I took some very fine emery cloth (NOT sandpaper) folded and just ran over it a few times to round the almost razor-like lip end off. I know people swear you shouldn't but I did, it worked and I'm still using it. I like every one of my other MacLaptops better ergonomically speaking. Cheap plastic is cheap plastic.

Having your forearm on a desk edge is understanable (as shown in your picture) but not your elbow. Also that image doesn't account for the fact that on a notebook the heel of your hand is resting by the trackpad... since 4 inches of laptop are projecting from the keyboard.

By having the heel on the laptop it should take the weight off your wrist. If it doesn't however.. just get a notebook stand... it should help your problem

Either that or you could man the fuck up and stop complaining about limp wrist chafing.

hope that helps.

You could buy one of those things that looks like an oversized nail file and has four different surfaces (red, blue, white, gray). Two of the surfaces are probably rougher than you would want to use, but one of the surfaces is specifically for removing slight ridges in nails. It might be just abrasive enough to barely remove the edge where your wrists are resting. The smoothest surface (I believe the white one) is used to polish the surface of the nail and might be good to use as a follow-up to the other one.

^ I'm sorry.. did you just recommend FILING DOWN A LAPTOP?!?!?

I don't recommend this .. especially if you have the blackbook.. just a thought.

I've emery clothed two blackbooks edges right at either side of trackpad. You can't even tell unless you compare the sides with the front by feel. No difference in appearance whatsoever. Just be careful.

depends on how far back your laptop or keyboard is in comparison to the edge of the table. Regardless....your arm still touches the table which makes it rub on the sharp surface of the macbook. That's the reason why you got that ridiculous looking notebook stand.. you had to go out and spend money on something that looks ridiculous bc apple didn't make it comfortable for you to use in the first place.

I'm pretty sure that is not a picture of the guy here on MacRumors.... i think that is a stock sales photo or something.

When i am typing on my MacBook, with it on my desk, the heels of my hands are on the palmrests and my elbows are no where near the surface of the desk. If i am just lazing around, that is another story, but if I am typing, I try to keep my back straight and my arms at 90 degree angles. Carpal Tunnel is not fun, so do yourself a favor, and learn to type correctly. Not saying that the front edge isn't sharp, and when I am just lounging around, or simply mousing on my trackpad, then yea, I notice it, and yes, it is annoying, and yes, I think that Apple should have not made it quite so severe. But that doesn't change the fact that I think you are doing something wrong, and possibly causing yourself a lifetime of pain.

So, now you know... and knowing is half the battle

GI JOOOOOOOE!!!!

i type correctly, you're talking about carpal tunnel, but your shoulders are going to get sore typing with your hands off the table all the time. I am not in pain whatsoever. Every other laptop i've owned, even the ibook, powerbook, MBP, dell all have a smooth edge. whoever designed the macbook didn't have a clue and still doesn't after many updates. My point is like what you just said....it's there, YOU noticed it. These other guys are acting like their machine doesn't have it and that people that notice it are idiots. You noticed and that's all that matters.....bc you know that the laptop is like that so you type another way so you don't touch it. You shouldn't have to make yourself uncomfortable bc apple didn't use a smooth piece instead of a sharp piece.

he's playing dumb apparently.. I don't have one of those stands because I don't have a problem with my macbook edge.

It was a suggestion rmhop... and although it might look "ridiculous" to you i doubt it could compete with your praying mantis typing technique... elbows planted firmly on your desk.

if you have a job go look around the office and see how everyone has their arms up in the air sitting back to type with their shoulders up. everyone you see has some part of their arm touching the desk. i take it you use a regular mouse without touching your arm on the table too? Why do you think they make pads to put under your wrists on your keyboard and one connected to your mouse pad? bc it's either rest it on a pad or the DESK.....you don't just leave it hanging in the air

I'm on sick leave because I got a paper cut. They should really make paper rouned on the edges. I used workers comp to buy my macbook.

The sharp edges are a design flaw, plain and simple.

No amount of lecturing on how to type correctly will fix the fact that it is a design flaw. Why would anyone even bother trying to defend Apple on this one? It's not a major screw up, but how can you deny that it is, in fact, a design flaw? I think I'm developing calluses on my inner wrists :p
I haven't seen one MacBook ad that describes the sharp edges as a "new, cutting edge design that helps you keep proper form while typing." (Get it, cutting edge?)
The sharp edges serve no purpose besides making the sides of the MacBook look flush when it is closed. Personally, I don't care how my MacBook looks when it is closed.
My old iBooks don't have sharp edges, and they look just fine. The sharp edges were one of the first things I noticed when I started using my new MacBook.
However, I am extremely happy with my MacBook overall. It will take way more than this to make me frustrated or angry about my MacBook.

Here's something to complain about: Why can't you play non-iTunes sound wirelessly from your Mac to your stereo via Airport Express? Why do you have to hardwire speakers directly to your computer in order to do that? Yes, I know about Airfoil, but why should I have to pay another $25 for one little feature that should already be included in the OS?
Discuss.

Maybe you need to start your own thread of OTHER OT crying, nobody is defending apple. The # of people sending high 5's to Albany NY is growing by the hour:D

haha are you serious? what would an imac or mac pro be used for then? i mean those can't be specifically designed for a desk could they? I mean although you can choose to use it there hahaha. Dude that's the funniest thing i've heard in a long time!!

Yes, they are designed for a desk and therefore called DESKtops. NOTEBOOKS, are designed to be portable, and used on a DESK. If they wanted them on your lap, they would still be calling them LAPtops. But, they have nixed that name.

Also, if your "laptop" is in your lap, how in the hell are you cutting your wrists on the edge. This seems physically impossible to me, having strictly used my Macbook in my lap at a variety of angles(many of which you say should be slicing my wrists open.)

For all of you saying your elbows are on your desk when you type, I still cannot simulate my wrists being affected by the edge. Please one of you take a picture so I can see how you are typing. Because right now, I am at my kitchen table elbows on the table, and my wrists/arms are still not touching the sharp edge.

I acknowledge that the edge is sharp, but under normal conditions, it should not touch your wrist or arm. It is at extreme/nonsensical angles that you start to have issues.

I bought a new black MacBook last week. Loved it, but had this EXACT issue. There were marks left on my wrists from the edge being so damn sharp.

Whether or not I hold my wrists a certain way is one thing, but the main concern is this has never happened to me before with any other laptop but this one.

My wife had the same problem. Was so bad she said for me to go get a MacBook Pro. Of course, I didn't object... ;-)

MBP does not have this issue at all.

^I think what they are trying to prove is that Apple shouldn't dictate what we as consumers consider normal usage conditions. For example. I burn my scrotum when I sit nude on my deck with my macbook in my lap. When i called to complain, Apple said that it wasn't standard practice to rest said laptop on any region of your gentiles.

Should I conform to their "normal" ways. I think not. So if these guys wanna use there macbook as a cutting device and wrest their wrists on it than it's clearly Apples fault for not accommodating them. I understand that now.

But i have discovered a solution to everybody's problem! For those of you complaining that the macbook is too sharp on your wrists. Simply rub your wrists back and forth on the edge vigorously for several minutes. Either you will manage to sand down your macbook or you will slit your wrists, thus putting an end to your pain. Everybody wins!

Now, if somebody could please proof read my post for spelling and grammar i would appreciate that.
