I hope it doesn't have an optical drive. What good are they anyway. I carry my optical drive everywhere ('cause I have to), and I think I've used it once in the past two years... to install Leopard.

I use my optical drive to play a few games (piracy protection hurts us all, unfortunately). That's it. But I do need my optical drive for that.

i cant tell if that was dripping with sarcasm, but i believe the guy u quoted was talking about the looks/theme of the device...

I edited for clarity. I really have no use for that ancient technology. What's it for? To rip MP3s? Like anyone does that anymore?

Heh. Alright I take back what I said. I hope it is a thick MacBook Air with more ports (than the current MacBook) with an optical drive. Then I will be happy :D

Right, so an external drive would be fine for that. But forcing me to carry around a pound of optical drive all the time is senseless. (OK, maybe it's not a whole pound, but it's unreasonably huge and must weigh something.)

if your first statement does come true, it will only show that those users are more interested in a name or image than reality. Elitist?

I think you'll find that a large portion of the people who buy macs, just like buyers of gibson, harley, bmw, expensive watches, etc. are looking for that status symbol over all else.

Gibson at one point did studies and found that their guitars sold better at higher price points, because the perceived value was higher to the consumer.

The people who have been angry at every iphone price drop are a perfect example of this. They aren't upset that they paid what they did for their phone, they're upset that tomorrow someone is going to be walking down the street with an iphone that couldn't afford one before the price drop, suddenly destroying the successful image that the iphone gave them.

If apple drops their prices too much, their brand will lose power. Just like any other luxury designer.

Yes, you are right. I never use my optical drive either, but many other people do. So I think it should be kept.

because not everyone wants to carry around an external drive or had another computer on the network to read the drive, nor do they want to go on the other side of the house just to insert a stupid disc

thats what I hater about the air,and i've been wanting a mac and if steve drops all optical drives no way would i buy a mac.

That's what external drives are for. Some people still use floppies, but Apple gave that up long before people were done with them.

Right, an external optical drive would be perfectly reasonable for me for the games I do play. However, it would be annoying to have to obtain that... :(

But I'm carrying around a drive all the time. Why make me carry a bulky thing I don't use just because a few people still need it?

Does That Mean A Backlit Keyboard To?

DOES ANYONE KNOW IF THERES GOING TO BE A BACKLIT KEYBOARD ON THE MACBOOKS? IF NOT JUST PLEASE TAKE I GUESS I JUST WANNA KNOW!!

THANKS FOR THE HELPPPPPPP :apple::apple::apple::apple::apple:

...just because a few people need it every now and then. It really is an almost-dead technology.

Because others use it :p

Seriously a BTO option would work, or at least 3-5 models of the macbook with two or three of them having no optical drive as default.

but dont make all with no optical drive.

how about tone down the caps then we'll help you. ;)

anyway I'm sure they will.

I'm willing to bet more people would prefer a built in optical drive...
For what? Seriously, I am not that atypical of a user, and I never, ever use it.

Apple killed off the floppy drive while practically everyone was still using floppies. Frankly I am surprised that they still have optical drives in any of their computers.

At least they didn't put one in the iPhone. ;)

I do not want Apple to make the MacBook any thinner. Just replacing the current model with an aluminium case and making the MacBook 16:9 ratio would be just fine.

im personally not a fan of widescreen laptops, but alas, media is moving to the 16:9 ratio :(

because many software packages, drivers etc still come on discs. Now dont give me the "download drives from the web" because what if you needed to install a new w-fi cor network card? you cant connect so your stuck.

DVD movie watching, people still watch DVDs and then theres the blu-ray on mac rumor...

People still use discs on computers, That hasnt died. Floppys, yes, those were replaced with blank discs and now flash pen drives..

This is Apple we're talking about. Their party line answer would be: use our internal wifi (or ethernet) and download movies from iTunes.

When they killed the floppy, hardly anyone had CD writers. It was a major PitA. By comparison, they are long overdue for killing the optical drive.

Wow I can't believe I read this whole thread. It took hours to read.

Anyways I can say that I have been trolling this place for months. I have been a Windows user for the past 12 years and Atari before that. Considering I am only 18 that is a large portion of my life. Anyways I loved windows xp and thought it was great. But thats not the point, the point is that I have made my whole family switch to mac from windows over the past 3 years. I can say that yes Apple's computers are more expensive, and yes macs can be terrible in terms of specs. However there are three things that really have convinced me to switch come this next gen of mac notebooks. That is the Operating system, the programs and the style. I was one of the first the get an iPod and became annoyed as the device became more and more common. That is because I felt unique for having bought the device. Which has done well, but at the expense of brand image. For computers I feel the same way. If mac becomes more competitive they will lose brand image. If anything macs are better off in keeping the same price but adding features. I have an MSI wind, a great netbook that serves my needs of basicly a electronic stack of paper with internet. However for my main computer I feel that as someone who will be using both logic and finalcut studio mac serves my needs better. This whole thread as been something about what makes mac bad or good. To be honest I just want to see mac back in computer business rather then the selling business. The less the better, I will pay more for that. But not for a machine that is everywhere, apple needs to either ramp up its numbers or prices to maintain its image, and I vote for prices to keep it unique.

but people are not apple. Some are hard core applefans and will do anything they tell them to. Some wont. those who wont are about 95% of apple users
