Probably because Apple insists on doing bi-yearly updates, unlike PC manufacturers who update their products as soon as new parts are available. Considering how fast technology is advancing, this leaves Apple technologically behind for the large part of the year, every year. Of course, this only matters for those looking for the latest & greatest, who end up waiting for the next upgrade indefinitely, taking over a year to even purchase the computer. (its what happened to me... :()
Intel has been following a similar update schedule that even Apple can keep up with.

Yeah I want that too!!

id see it with an air-esque black (backlit!?) keyboard actually, it seems apple is trying to tie their products together with a common look/theme

not different at all from what theyve done in the past, and i think its great for establishing brand identity

hey guys,
i'm curious: why are people, for example in germany's biggest mac forum talking about mac book updates by tomorrow?
could that be possible?

Specs are not everything...

There's nothing pro about the Macbook Pros. They are worse than most anything out there in their category, and yet cost more than anything out there. Just look at the graphics card. The processor and RAM are similar to most anything else. The HDD capacity is less, standard.

I work with several people who have Macs. We are all regularly on the road and exchange information/views on the spot. While it takes my 1-year old Vista Notebook anywhere from 20 seconds to several minutes to come back from sleep, the MacBook users are ready to go within a few seconds. All of them have inferior notebooks than me based on specs....

I just timed my HP dv6000t with Vista. 3-4 seconds from sleep to being able to use the desktop. Something's wrong with your laptop.

because baseless speculation is the way of the world i suppose. In reality theres a VERY slim chance of that happening.

Hibernation != Sleep

Toshiba satelite :eek:

14 seconds to get to the desktop
5 seconds for explorer to realize it has crashed itself
5 seconds for it to start again
2 seconds to become useable again

26 seconds. Not bad, but annoying.

For me, specs are everything. I am well aware of the situation you are talking about. My Macbook is up in 1 second, thanks to a system mod I downloaded called SmartSleep.

However, the things I really want are just specs, and a Mac, and a competitive price. Apple's hardware is the same as any other manufacturer (actually worse in many cases), so it's only their profit margins that prevent them from doing this.

lol are we getting into some simple coding here on the forums?:p
The default behavior in Vista is to hibernate the laptop or even desktop. You actually have to choose to Sleep or Shutdown.

In OS X the default behavior is to sleep and write a sleep state to disk in case of power failure. When you wake up while still under power you're just waking from sleep and not restoring from the sleep image.

shouldnt it take longer to read from the drive and startup?

or is my understanding of sleep vs hibernation skewed?

enlighten me kind sir:p

Read my post here and then say the MacBook's pricing is competitive with other laptops.

I do agree with your pricing on the HP dv4t. But do note that it is their latest updated model. I am hoping that Apple does beat the base $950 price with their updates.

On the other hand, I would definitely pay extra $100 for the ability to run OSX + magsafe (I lost a nice Fujitsu laptop due to someone tripping on the powercord) + pure aesthetics on the Apple (I am certainly no Apple fanboy)

I do agree that Apple overcharges for pretty much essential upgrades like memory, video card

Im no expert but...

Hibernation shuts down the computer after saving a "snapshot" of your computer, so when you resume, it boots a bit faster. No power consumption

Sleep (Stand By?) just cuts off power to the hard drive, monitor, etc, leaving only the RAM. So when you open the lid, it loads off the RAM to restore your session.

It does take longer to restore from hibernation then sleep.

sry i meant can you actually tell me the workings of both so I can have a basic understanding. This is one thing im clueless about in the world of computing.

I DO understand hibernation and sleeping in bears tho:p

That is correct.

i guess they're thinking of new mac books by tomorrow because of todays update.

I HOPE THEY ARE RIGHT!

super drive or blu ray please ;)

Apple makes the BEST music players in the world;

Apple makes the BEST smartphone in the world;

Apple, of course, continues to make the BEST computers in the world.

As I said before, Apple is on its way to becoming the BIGGEST consumer electronics conglomerate of the globe; this is happening in less than 2 years.

MS is DEAD. DELL is DEAD.

Unless Apple starts making consumer electronics including televisions, a/v receivers, stand alone blu-ray players, console game systems or loudspeakers, I would hold off on saying the "biggest consumer electronics conglomerate of the globe."
