4:3 with matte screens make the computer look old. 16:9, you see more to. so its better
not my preferance. i just hate the overly rectangular form factor that it makes the footpring into.

This is Apple we're talking about. Their party line answer would be: use our internal wifi (or ethernet) and download movies from iTunes.
When they killed the floppy, hardly anyone had CD writers. It was a major PitA. By comparison, they are long overdue for killing the optical drive.
Wow I can't believe I read this whole thread. It took hours to read.
Anyways I can say that I have been trolling this place for months. I have been a Windows user for the past 12 years and Atari before that. Considering I am only 18 that is a large portion of my life. Anyways I loved windows xp and thought it was great. But thats not the point, the point is that I have made my whole family switch to mac from windows over the past 3 years. I can say that yes Apple's computers are more expensive, and yes macs can be terrible in terms of specs. However there are three things that really have convinced me to switch come this next gen of mac notebooks. That is the Operating system, the programs and the style. I was one of the first the get an iPod and became annoyed as the device became more and more common. That is because I felt unique for having bought the device. Which has done well, but at the expense of brand image. For computers I feel the same way. If mac becomes more competitive they will lose brand image. If anything macs are better off in keeping the same price but adding features. I have an MSI wind, a great netbook that serves my needs of basicly a electronic stack of paper with internet. However for my main computer I feel that as someone who will be using both logic and finalcut studio mac serves my needs better. This whole thread as been something about what makes mac bad or good. To be honest I just want to see mac back in computer business rather then the selling business. The less the better, I will pay more for that. But not for a machine that is everywhere, apple needs to either ramp up its numbers or prices to maintain its image, and I vote for prices to keep it unique.
So YOU don't use a DVD drive. We get it! Many, many more people do use a DVD drive.
Apple at the very least needs to offer DVD as bto. Then you could have a driveless laptop and others could have a laptop with a drive.
I will be willing to bet, that if a bto option was offered by Apple, many, many more people would opt for the optical drive.
Not everyone wants to pay Apple for the privilege of downloading a movie they already have on DVD. Not everyone has high speed internet. Some people actually use their optical drives for quick back ups, exchanging data with others, authoring dvd movies, generating photo dvds for friends and family without computers.
The list is nearly endless. Wow! for fifty bucks an optical drive is pretty useful!

but people are not apple. Some are hard core applefans and will do anything they tell them to. Some wont. those who wont are about 95% of apple users
Nothing has changed since Apple killed off the floppy. And like I said, it was far more useful at the time than the optical disk is today.
Theres been speculation that the macbook and MBP lines will merge into simply the macbook line.long time reader, first time poster...
not sure if this has been brought up in the thread yet, but if apple were to release the updated macbook before the updated macbook pro wouldn't it overshadow and render the pro model obsolete? i can't imagine this would be a wise move. as it is there seems like only a few minor differences between the top of the range macbook and the entry level macbook pro.
thoughts?
I'm surprised that this thread has been so fast.
Single processor Mac towers for $1,499?![]()
But you only need to install software once, right? So you wouldn't need an optical drive all the time.because many software packages, drivers etc still come on discs. Now dont give me the "download drives from the web" because what if you needed to install a new w-fi cor network card? you cant connect so your stuck.
If you play nice you can get a quad for under $500 without a monitor.Since we can buy quad processor mini-towers from other vendors for $600 to $700 - $1500 for a single processor Apple sounds like the usual margin gouging.
the numba, of the beast! <=== epic fail =(
I really hope we get news of more leaks tomorrow, not of the actual product, just something about an event. I want to be suprised
The only justification I had for getting the mac book pro was design, size, and gpu. With the new design in place, that just leaves size and gpu. I would love for apple to streamline their notebooks and just have the notebook difference be the screen sizes with the ability to customize and add a gpu. The thing, though, is that apple needs the ability to differentiate their notebook lines and I think the pro will be sticking around. Need a reason to have the premium around. =) I think all the items in apples lineup need a serious price discount. I am willing to pay for a premium but not being gouged on older inferior technology. Also I am a big believer in volume sales over mark-up. If apple makes their products within easier grasp of the market, think of all the additional sales they can add with accessories, software, etc. with their increased market share.
My only other wish is that they would do something with their desktops. The mac mini is a half assed attempt at a budget desktop while the apple tv is half assed as well. Why not combine the two together creating a media center type device microsoft has had in the PC market. I have a perfectly good monitor and want to update my apple desktop and so I do not need the Imac, the mini is half assed and seriously outdated, and the mac pro is way out of the range of what I need or am willing to pay.
Blu-ray laptops aren't that much more nowadays.I think the MB will get a price drop ($899) but the MBP will stay at $1999 but gain more high-end features (Blu-ray, etc) to differentiate from the MB.

Am i the only one whos seen this?! its saying they could be in stores by next tuesday!
personally i'm in the market for a high end notebook (something with a graphics card, faster processor, etc.) but if the speculation is true that there will be one single "MacBook" line, then this would be fantastic news![]()

And yes, add me to the list of those who do not want an internal optical drive.
