(MicroSD and MiniSD are just too small for humans - in fact I'd bet on a new format where a credit-card sized device holding 50 to 100 GB was the standard.)

I can't find a pic of one now, but... have you ever seen the data devices they used on the original Star Trek? I always thought those were very prescient; as they seem to be about the right size for a general data transfer format: small enough to be easy, but big enough not to lose.

Thank you kind sir!

And honestly ive never seen bluray as anything but a gimmick. It is still optical media just with more storage, yes its good for the here and now, but moving on is the way to go in terms of technology.

Okay. If you can come up with a more superior form of technology that will let us watch high definition movies or make it past 1080i and/or can be used as a form of data storage, please go right ahead and tell us about it. We'd be very open to your findings. ;)

uh, the higher capacity FLASH memory that is in the works?

flash cant handle random access and is not as reliable, nor as archival

again we are talking in the 5 years from now timeframe. FLASH is more than well on its way to becoming the next main storage medium.

Another reason i dont think bluray will be the HUGE (it will be sucessful of course, just not amazing) success is that really, most people (read: not us tech guys or the ppl that demand the best of the best, which really cant make up more than 10% of the market max) are MORE than happy with DVD quality. That and the fact that HDTVs still arent the norm just means bluray does seem gimmicky to the uninformed (or the content).

just my 2 cents tho

It (Blu-ray) has already been more rapidly accepted format than the DVD format it replaced.

Apple's dumb, IMHO, if they don't jump on this trend, even though it will eventually be replaced with a more superior invention at a later time.

Think of it this way: If CD-ROMs weren't embraced by the computer world (just because it would someday get replaced), we'd still be saving our data on floppy disk (and you don't see those anymore in new computers). And if CDs weren't embraced as the bridge from records/cassettes to MP3, we wouldn't have gotten the convenient CD player... which was, computer-wise, turned into CD-ROM drive. It's a building block to the next level. :)

wasnt apple the first to abandon the floppy drive?

Think that, just with optical. NOT THIS TIME AROUND but sometime in the near future (2-5 years id say)

Blu-ray could be come a Laser Disc -- a failure -- pretty quickly if someone comes up w/ an innovative all-around usable media invention in the next couple of years (Blu-ray will be a blip on the RADAR like Laser Disc was). If not, then it has the "legs" to last like like VHS did. Some people still won't give that up completely!

edit: Just pleeeeeeeeease avoid that nonsense of CD-R, CD+R, DVD-R, DVD+R. Where some players/recorders will play CD-R and not CD+R, but will play DVD+R and not play DVD-R. It's so dumb to see a self of CD/DVD (+)s, (-)s on the shelves of stores.

I think theyre just using that PowerBook photo as a stock image, as a mockup to show that the DisplayPorts go on laptops. The G4 design is pretty much the "design standard" for recent laptops and you often see it in advertising and on TV and whatnot to depicit a standard laptop.

Especially for ITT Tech and ComputerTraining.com which do NOT offer Apple training... In fact if you watch closely, there using iMac's too... To teach people on how to screw up a windows network. :)

Good for you! Now, let's assume something is wrong with my notebook and it has nothing to do with Vista: What should I do so that an expert can look at my hardware? Mail it to Sony? No thanks, I have work to do. Go to Geek Squad or another place? Yes! Actually no, I did that already and they had no clue why waking up from sleep takes that long even though their hardware tests found nothing wrong with the machine itself.

By the way, Geek Squad was very fair. Since they could not fix the problem, they did not charge for their time testing and trying.

You know it's actually based on HD type/speed/cache and CPU: Type/speed/cache as well as how the BIOS does the power management.

Sleep to one BIOS is different than another. Also be sure your not HIBERNATING the system, that would cause a 2-3min startup, however that is how you change battery's or stop power consumption all together. Depending on the system you don't have any course of action but to deal with it.

Geek squad? Are you serious? ITT Tech dropouts. They keep our IT Services dept in business though! In fact 3 calls this week and it's only Tuesday. One was a false diagnose of a bad motherboard, turned out the PS was bad. Another was the ill fated OLE32.DLL unregistered and they wanted to reinstall Office 2007... 2 mins later we had it fixed and did it remotely.

If we follow logic, we know that Fusion isn't slated until 2009 and mobile dual-core Nehalem isn't coming until January 2010. However, I can see this happening when those chips are actually available.

I'd say the bottom three are more likely than the top three.

Quad-core Nehalem will come in three variants. Two are 55* W (too hot for the MacBook Pro) and one is 45* W. Apple probably won't just have one CPU in the MacBook Pro range. Because the quad-core will have lower GHz than dual-cores, Apple most likely won't use both dual-cores and quad-cores in the MacBook Pro lineup. So I'm only expecting dual-cores through Nehalem.

Mobile quad-core isn't coming until late 2009 anyway.

* Mobile Nehalem TDPs are 10 W higher than mobile Penryn TDPs for the same heat output.

And let's not forget the C2DX chips on 45nm are available with low power so that's also a possibility for the would-be Pro units. Penryn hasn't run it's full course yet but it's nearing the end. I though I read Nehalem was ahead by 3 months...

I feel so outa the loop now that I'm not doing sector based analytical work anymore...

Not sure if an Intel Atom based system would be in the works for 2009. It's not GREAT yet but has potential. I've been playing with a Via based Netbook and it's very useful, the Atom's are a tad quicker but produce a bit more heat (albeit different manufactures and different designs). Some people have installed OS X on an Acer based unit as well as an atom based Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeepc (really crappy build quality but nice) with good results. 7-9hr battery life which is sweet in a 2lb case.

I'll be keeping my 10-year-old TV. It will work just fine with Cable. The only thing changing in Feb is that over-the-air broadcasts will no longer be picked up by older TVs.

No, think again. Once broadcast goes digital, cable will follow. Most of the cable companies are already planing the set top box change.

Analog signal is going bye-bye. HD TV's and Blu-ray are going to be the X-mas gift of choice.

Thats EXACTLY what ive been saying.

By the time they can drop the price and ramp up production on a new standard, Blu-ray will be entrenched. You guys are missing the point, Blu-ray has already won. Whether you are a fan or not, this is the standard and the real issue is getting a 2 hour movie at 1080p onto some kind of media at a price point that maximizes profit for the movie companies. And Sony for their efforts gets a slice too.

Are you all against bluray because Apple offers digital downloads? Well, in most countries outside USA, movie companies aren't that interested to offer digital downloads, and the only option is to buy discs from store. Does Apple offer 1080p downloads in USA? The only way for me to watch 1080p movies from my 42" TV is to buy blurays.

Currently physical discs are the only option for worldwide movie distribution. Surely things will change in future, but are you people saying that Apple shouldn't adopt bluray because digital downloads will be available worldwide sometime in 2015? I just don't get why mac people are so against bluray... if it's available on mac, you don't have to use it, you can still watch dvd's with your Macbook Pro and its' full hd capable display.

who said mac people are against blu-ray? i love watching blu-ray mkv rips on my mbp either hooked up to an hdtv or on its own.. good stuff :D i dont care about the drive because i wont use it.. mkv 4 life

Wasn't that just like DVD's in the beginning. Look how well tjhey are doing now.

Few people currently have Bluray. Many people don't even have DVD readers.

Think of the last time you've used or seen someone using a computer that doesn't have a USB port.

I can't think of anyone I know that uses their computer regularly that doesnt have a DVD reader now? They have been in PC's for a good few years now. I understand if people dont have writers but readers...!?

On another note I came across a knackered 6 or 7 year old Compaq laptop the other day at work - I went to plug in a USB mouse (as you do) and it had no USB ports!

lol, i don't know anything about glass trackpads, but i have heard the macbook pro's display is sleeker, more iphone-like. not sure _how_ iphone-like, but something bezel-less.

bluray would be nice, too, but i'm not holding my breath.

Do you know if the Macbooks will be available in more than one colour?

No one know, but everything poinst to silver as they are Aluminium, then possible black and white premium-price incarnations?

Can't see them being iPod like with every colour under the sun.

Apple makes the BEST music players in the world;

Apple makes the BEST smartphone in the world;

Apple, of course, continues to make the BEST computers in the world.

As I said before, Apple is on its way to becoming the BIGGEST consumer electronics conglomerate of the globe; this is happening in less than 2 years.

MS is DEAD. DELL is DEAD.

The next generation macbook is still going to have a slower GPU than the dell xps 1330's that got released over a year ago. That's sadder than your blind fanboy troll.

I have a few Audio CDs and DVDs here that just would not play on computers (Mac and PC) because someone thought it was a great idea to copy-protect the cr*p out of it. So basically I have to download the movie from somewhere to be able to watch something I payed for. I purchased the license to view/listen to it anyway, so I guess this is kinda legal.

I don't have any TV in the house anymore. Local TV programming here is terrible, basically commercials with (even worse) "reality" show bits or "news" inbetween. I have an eyeTV-dongle on my Mac Mini so guest can watch normal TV if they have to, but that's all. Oh, and there's no way to get non-german series or movies in their original language here. The translation seliminate most of the jokes and make everything sound like a bad cartoon. I though this would change with digital TV, but it didn't.

Maybe in a few years, IPTV (TV over the internet, on demand and all) will work better.

CPU clock speeds aren't as important as they used to be. Nowadays, the hard drive(s), memory bus and GPU(s) are the bottlenecks. The only times my CPU goes 100% load is when re-encoding video for my iPhone and games. For normal things, a faster hard drive increases responsiveness and performance trmendously.

Besides, a few hundred Megahertz don't really make a difference, do they? Especially in laptops, the CPU will not stay at peak frequency for long because the whole thing would overheat. You only get full speed for short burts.
