Well the ad is still up. But if there really is no such thing as a 2.6GHz chip, then I guess it's some kind of error.

You can buy the 15" Macbook Pro with the 2.6 GHz chip right now.

And it's $2749.00

mp without mbp??? NO WAY

Theres no way they would update new chips into MB's before MBP's - it would completely make the pro line into lame ducks for an entire quater.
Apple prides themselves on their pro user market far too higly for that.

If anything it would be new chips in MBP's before MB's - never vice-versa.

The most likely scenario is (assuming they actually ship Q3 08) is that the entire Notebook line would get overhauls of some description. But theres so much buzz about it now (from reliable sources), October looks really likely.

As for those of you flapping your feathers about wireless range + aluminum; Apple has obviously thought about this conundrum to some extent - as Jobs said publicly when they released iPhone 3G, so i wouldnt be suprised to see some sort of innotive solution to this problem.

It's important to remember though that the alternatives to aluminum are limited - very few other materials are as tough and as light, and still look damn sexy.

What about Polyester? =p

This might be THE macbook I finally buy. I've been thinking about buying one since the last of the ibooks. I was really close with the first Macbook but now it looks like with the price drop I may finally bite the bullet. I would prefer a 13.3" screen or even a 12" one for portability sake but would like a 2.4ghz processor and at least 2GB of RAM. An optical drive isn't an absolute necessity but I would definitely use it and I know many others would too.

if that is infact the new MBPs it would explain the iphone like screen rumor, however why would they use the old chipset? and the dodgey GPU?

Screen is very cool. Old specs=Current hardware IE: You order and that's the specs your gonna get... *Photo is representation only disclaimer I'm sure or "Stock Photo".

no black keyboard = fake.

screen should look pretty close to that, though.

I think the black glossy bezel looks terrible. It works for the iMac but I think it would look horrible on a laptop. I sure hope they make it more like the Macbook Air: All aluminum, black keys.

I just hope they are released next week *crosses fingers*. Seems weird they would put them up in advance though

Something tells me it's gonna be THINNER. I realize those are only representations. 3/4" or less maybe? Screen we KNOW will be 1/8" thick.

I think the Macbook Pros are already too thin in my opinion. Seems like they made the case thinner to fit into the 1" height. The case warps, bends and dents way too easily. It feels kinda cheap on the display cover too. The Macbook Air is much more robust in that way although the tapered shape adds a lot of stability.

How do we know the thickness of the display? I'm aware that LED backlighting saves some space, but still... I think Apple will make it 0.01" thinner overall just for bragging rights "even thinner than before", just like the did with the iPod Nano 4G.

Why is Apple obsessed with everything being thin/thinner?

Apple does this on the wirless keyboards and iSights. The LED was hidden behind white plastic on Core Duo iMacs and G4 iBooks, too.

Ha ha, you don't get it, do you? Apple, no matter how much you like them, do not have technology to make a LED light through metal as claimed in the advert.
Plastics as on the iBooks are semitransparent, so it works there, but through metal? Haha, seriously … ::D

Actually, the IR sensor could be next to the superdrive slot like on Mac Minis.
If you notice, it isn't behind the metal there either.

So what's the "camera on" LCD shining through on my MBP? I can't see it at all when the light is off. It's like magic. Isn't that a metal bevel around the screen? Or is it not?

Like someone said, bragging rights. It's also amazing (I don't care who you are, it is) that you can pack something into such a small case. Pretty neat. Couple months ago I was going through the utility room and found an old 2" color LCD casio TV. It was a brick but at the time I thought wow a color tv in such a small case...

Wonder what are kids will have in 20 years... Look my PalmPod! It stores every song ever made and then some on my palm and it's a 140" HD projection TV too...

Moores law is still 18months right? Apple's Law is 24months (Every 24 Months we get an Insanely Great gadget or breakthrough on an existing)... Seriously, look it up starting with 1976 Apple I. By that math though were looking at Jan 09'.

I think Sony said it best (although referring to the Eee-PC), it's "a race to the bottom"... and I agree. Making something thinner for the sole purpose of being thin, and sacrificing features because of it, is just dumb. We end up paying more for less. (MacBook Air). Now I won't complain if Apple manages to squeeze more features & power into new MacBooks, just don't go overboard.

That's what external drives are for. Some people still use floppies, but Apple gave that up long before people were done with them.
How could it hurt to put one in? If Apple wanted to, they could develop the worlds thinnest Superdrive, and build it into the new MacBooks.

I am also hoping the stats are improved. No inter graphics (w/ dedicated graphics memory)(not likely...), 2.4 GHz base (4MB shared L2 cache up to 6MB), 2 GB RAM (800 Mhz) base, at least 160 GB HDD (5400 RPM, 7200 available) base, high brightness, high contrast, LED screen with wide color gamut (capable of displaying millions of colors) + better battery life

I'm also hoping for the design to be like a thick MacBook Air. (w/ optical drive -- not affecting the thickness -- w/ backlit keyboard)

Available in various "groovy" colors for those college students.

And my dreams could go on... and on....

It might hurt what would otherwise be their new bottom line. They could leave it out as a marketing decision. You know: they'll tell us how thin and light and wonderful things are without it and then laugh all the way to the bank as we all buy the expensive matching external drive because we really do need it.

I havnt looked in for a little while, so can someone help me out here?

are we arguing about the disconinuation of optical drives, or the combo drive/superdrive debacle?

Personally i see apple getting rid of optical drives in FUTURE revisions, but deffinatly not this one. The backlash this time around would be enormous. Once flash matures from its infancy (read:2-5 years) is when this will most likely happen.

As for the combo drive, it is simply unexceptable. DVD writer standard please.

It would hurt me because not only would I have to pay for a drive I don't want, but then I'd have to carry it with me everywhere I go.

I think their drive already is the thinnest. But it still takes up a LOT of room and significantly impacts the overall design. If you look at the Air, the biggest difference is the lack of drive. That lets them make it so much smaller. (I'd be perfectly happy with the Air if it cost $900 and had a higher-capacity hard drive.)

Except that, you know, Apple doesn't actually manufacture Superdrives (Pioneer does AFAIK)... So, it would be dependent on Pioneer's ability to develop it (who ironically, haven't been pioneers in their field for quite a while. :D)

Actually, now that I think of it... Apple has been working on the world's thinnest optical.

All i can say is thank god thats never been implemented. Who whats to flip their computer upside down to put a CD in?
I know! They should put it into the screen! That'd be so much easier :p

I don't really think that would be another place to put the thinnest drive ever.
