Absolutely. The space consumed by an optical drive could be devoted to a bigger battery, more cooling ( = faster CPU), 2nd HD bay, etc.

It's an interesting article. Among other things, it notes:
One important consideration in the placement of the ODD, Apple said, is the convenience afforded to the user of the portable computer when inserting and removing a disk from the drive. It noted that users have become accustomed to intuitive user interfaces and convenient access to the ODD through the real estate along the side edges of the portable computer housing. "Any reconfiguration, therefore, of the user interface for the ODD must take into account user expectations, efficiency, and convenience," the company wrote. "It must not be unintuitive or counter-intuitive."

not to quash your enthusiasm, but i didn't take those photos. i just remembered seeing them a few months ago.
The Eeeepc in later forms the 901 and 1000h are actually quite good. The first models were crappy at best but they hit a price point and created a culture of portable users. I have a Sylvania G Netbook (Everex Cloudbook with 1gb ram) and it's very usable. I've played with the 1000h which is why my Syl is going up on ebay later this week. There both great machines. I'll loose a real HD and half the space but gain a larger screen and faster bootup times.
I was hoping Apple would make a mini-note. The clinics I manage (IT) have begun carrying them around (dr's) and find they work fantastic. We are using the HP's which look like a mini powerbook in some ways. If Apple created one with the 10" screen and Ive's design priced around $700-1200 it would be a winner. These Mini-notes average 2lbs with the HP's running the heaviest at 3lbs. Fujitsu's run even heavier but add a touch screen (useless at these screen sizes unless your using a well sharpend pinky nail). There are higher end models with C2D's but I'm not dropping $2500 and neither would any of my customers.
Add in MobileMe and you have the perfect addition to any desktop or MacBook Pro user's arsenal. A Mini Book you can grab and go with, use on the train, in the car, etc... If the 1000h gets 7.5hrs running XP then a unit running OS X should easily get a bit more, as is the case for any laptop.
Of course that would be left for Jan 09... But would make Xmas this year better for me if it were released sooner (HINT HINT).

I totally aggree. Attention to detail and style, most computer company's barely even care let alone get it right. This is why when you sit down in front of a mac, your like ahhhh, instant zen. hahaha.

What's keeping me afloat the waiting boat is that the current leopard Macbooks are outdated in terms of physical components in regards to what components vista machines have. I visited a few local brand computer stores and i barely found a 2Gb machine ... they are stocked at 3Gb + of ram ... not to mention the hard drives are 200+ ... DVD writers are standards...
I am truly frustrated by the wait and by the lack of matching components in the macbook... if a vista laptop can be sold, profit for under $900 canadian (taxes & profit Included) why can't apple ?

I think the point was that I was elitist when I said I don't have a use for an optical drive.
(And for the record, I don't support any politician. I am working to get rid of all politicians in the world.)
