The more I think about it a glass touchpad would be very useful, hopefully it would have the ability to customize what icons are on it. :apple:

it will because of the backlight

Why is everyone assuming that Apple will include a glass touchpad with iPhone like functionality? Why would Apple put a backlight behind it? This sounds like a very expensive component to include in an entry lineup of consumer notebooks.

Apple is more likely to include a glass trackpad without any backlighting. Perhaps Apple feels that tracking and the overall user experience is enhanced by using a glass surface. It is also a much more enviromentally friendly component.

Just my thoughts.

A screen behind a trackpad just does not make any sense.

As for user experience, I remember how my Touch with AntiGlare glass-protector felt: something like that as a trackpad would be x10 better than the current one.

LED's do not produce heat like you would think. Even florescent lights don't produce much heat. If it is the glasspad than an LCD with LED backlight would be the only way to go.

Also a proximity sensor would be there to tell if your finger was hovering or your wrist/palms were over it (thus turning touch off). Move your finger near it and it turns on, but in the Apple Esk slow dim up and dim down after your done. I think there will be a learning curve to it but I'd say 20mins and you got it. Would make the 13" screens seem bigger.

Anybody else agree with these two things?

1. A glass trackpad with screen underneath would be added complexity without much benefit (not very apple-istic). Is there something obvious I'm missing here?
2. The reported possible black trimmed bezel doesn't look as good as using a single color (ala macbook air, pro, standard).

The main reason I'm switching is simple-looking hardware. I definitely woudn't mind just having a lighter version of any current model as a refresh, but adding doohickies or contrasting colors...ehhhh.

Oooh! You know what would be cool in the next 5-10 years? Thin laptop with e-ink outer screen. Or 18 inch widescreen laptop with popout wiimote. Time for Apple and Nintendo to merge!

  1. Who knows, I cant think of any uses for it expect looks and "wow" factor
  2. HP has a unique bezel that's underneath the laptop screen. So the entire screen extends all the way with no plastic bezels.

Does anyone think the new laptops will be included in the back to school offer?

I can't see this happening, and is why i think that the new MacBooks could arrive in November.

I also have a feeling that they will come out after it ends. But i sure hope not >< would be pretty sweet to get the new MBP and a cheap iPod nano

I feel that Sept 30th is wishful thinking like the 16th was.
I don't think it would be fair to US customers to give UK customers a cheap iPod and new laptop!

True, can't see that happen.
No, I can agree with that :) People would probably complain alot xD

Is there any indications or rumors regarding the new MBP suggesting that there will be higher screen resolution on the 15.4" (if they will keep 16:10 aspect ratio of course)?
No rumors I know about. The last time this happened was in October 2005 (1280*854 -> 1440*960).

Back on topic, do you see the next MacBooks not having an Intel Integrated graphics?
No, although I do see a better integrated GPU (Intel or otherwise).

Does anyone know if the Mac Pro update will fall on 10/14?.. or at least suspect it will?
Not until early 2009, I think.

How does it compare to 16:10 and 16:9 ratio?
In the case of the MacBook Pro, 1.6:1 gives 94% the vertical pixel count from 1.5:1 and the same number of horizontal pixels.

From 1440*960 to 16:9 1600*900, there's a 11% increase in horizontal pixel count with 94% the vertical pixel count. The end result is a 4.2% total resolution increase (as opposed to a 11% increase from 1440*900).
