Why would that be impossible?

I think thats one thing that is missing off the MacBooks and MacBook Pro's, most PC manufacturers include one as standard now in their laptops. I for one would welcome the addition as I use my camera almost daily and it's much more pleasent to use a card reader than USB cables and software.

Not impossible, but very, very improbable. Apple is legendary for NOT following PC standards. I too would welcome a built in card reader, both SD and CF. For me, this a more important addition than the Blu-Ray support most are clamoring for.

In that case - wouldn't we have seen retailers running out of stock on macbooks? I haven't seen any reports on this anywhere.

Besides, there has been no official statement about October 14th.

And to your final point, yes student loans have infact been reduced substantially - watch the news.

Have you seen the latest data on college students and macbook purchases?

This whole thread is silly b/c by Oct. 7th we will know if there is an event on the 14th, that is how apple rolls.

if a new macbook dosent come out before or on october 14th. ill be getting a black macbook and getting 4gb of ram or whatever. i dont need anything fancy anymore
If you need a MacBook immediately, then good luck on your purchase. On the other hand, I have waited since MacBooks were first introduced in May of 2006 for one that isn't made of plastic, so I can definitely wait a bit longer yet. I get the feeling that the wait is going to be well worth it.

So, 1600x900 and 1920x1080 are a done deal?
Assuming 16:9 (which I think is likely), then yes.

MacBook Pro's get a new keyboard and trackpad (MBA style), along with speed bumps to 2.6/2.8 overclocked, but otherwise unchanged.

At the big party in January, MBP's get their case redesign and champagne corks are heard popping across the land...
I don't see two "redesigns" happening within a few months. I also don't see why Apple can't just redesign both parts in one update.

At this point, I do not have any confidence in the rumors that the MBP will be more modified than to have the panel where the kbd and trackpad are replaced with a new one accommodating the new hardware. The rest of the thing is what it is for now, and the updating of the MacBook will suck all the oxygen out of the room for this announcement anyway.
...
No company as PR-conscious as Apple would step on that kind of guaranteed free media coverage with another new product intro (MBP) at the same time.
But every year all the iPods are updated at one day, not one after the other. In fact, Apple uses one event for multiple products, not multiple events with one product per event.

No new MB/MBPs 'til MWSF. This sux, but it's true. :(
Why do you say that?

Wouldn't an 8 or 9-inch-screen iPhone/iPod Touch, with a virtual keyboard AND a keyboard port, meet that new competitive challenge perfectly?
As long as it had a USB port and a micro-DVI port, I'd say it would work.

Yeah, apple would need to add adequate internal storage,
I can see 4 flash chips for up to 64 GB.

isn't the iPhone/iPod Touch already MOST of what a "netbook" or low-priced computer needs to be, except for screen size?
It is.

I see it as being cheaper than a comparable Apple netbook for less "crampedness," more "snappiness," and a smaller size. I would also like to see split display (2 for 5.5", 4 for 8" :D), tabs, iLife mobile, iWork mobile, and Preview mobile. Those apps would be like Mobile Safari in comparison to regular Safari. I don't see Mac OS X being all that a good experience on a small display and limited hardware specs—wasn't that one of the reasons why the MacBook Air stressed those points?

Stupid MacBook Tricks

I'm amazed at how photoshop pirates think that if they alter an apple photo they will fool somebody. They just take the some design elements and shrink or enlarge them. Let's make a 30 inch screen like an iPhone or a iMac screen the size of a tablet. Come on guys think different and get more creative.

Hey iMacmatician, any thoughts on the possible incorporation of anodized aluminum colors, or for that matter, black and silver? Additionally, any thoughts on possible differentiating factors for MBPs vs. MBs if the MB moves to aluminum?

My Mac Book Pro

I am a VP of Engineering for a software company in the enterprise social networking space. I use my present MacBook Pro (Core Duo, 2GB RAM, 100GB HD) in the real world as follows: Entourage Office Suite, Parallels XP, Parallels Vista, Parallels SUSE/Oracle/Apache/Tomcat, Java/Lazslo Dev., Customer Demos with an external projector VGA/DVI + DVI to VGA adaptor.

What I needed in my original MacBook Pro.

Networking: At work I am hardwired or accessing the network via WiFi with Cisco VPN Client.

On the road I use an Express34 WLAN card for remote internet access when LAN or WiFi access is unavailable or prevented (happens quite often) due to company’s security policy. This card is a life saver. (If Apple offered an embedded EVDO/EDGE/HSDPA option like Dell and IBM/Lenovo that would be perfect).

At home I’m on WiFi. (WiMax would be great but universally available connectivity is the key)

Peripherals: I backup to an external Firewire 800 drive (designated Time Machine) every night. (Firewire 800/3200 would be great but all of my peripheral Disk/Camera are either 400 or 800 and I’m not likely to replace these any time soon)

Docking: I use my machine at the office, on the road and at home. I would not buy or use 2 docking stations so the ports are important.

Power: I carry an Apple Magsafe power supply. (Would love to eliminate the transformer brick.) As I travel I carry the Apple Magsafe Airline Adaptor and request powered seats. I carry 1 spare battery for emergency and when A/C power is not within reach. (Much has been said about an induction-based battery charger. I would just prefer the wall cord plug into a battery pack with the charger circuitry built into it and eliminate having to carry anything but a power cord.)

What I desire in New MacBook Pro:

Fastest Quad-Core Intel CPU Possible (if HP and Dell can offer an Intel Core 2 Duo Extreme Edition 2.53 GHz Quad-Core with 1066 Mhz, then Apple should or they are simply technically behind today).

8-16 GB dual-channel 1066MHz DDR3

Display/Graphics – Improved Graphics card and LED backlit 17-inch Hi-Resolution Widescreen Display standard. (I have the anti-glare but each to their own. I don't need an 18” when mobile and I don’t need any more weight to carry.)

Storage: 300 GB Minimum - prefer 500 GB SATA. (eSATA connection for rapid backup/restore would be great but not required.)

Keyboard – I’m fine with the old MacBook Pro or the new Macbook Air keyboard, color doesn’t matter. (Fix the wristwatch/palm rest area wear issues and heat related problems.)

Firewire: 400/800/3200 ( Do not want to have to carry more adaptors – a Pro laptop should offer universal peripheral connections without becoming a dongle milking machine).

DVI is a must with 30" support and HDMI would be great. (More and more I walk into offices with HDTV Plasma/LCD displays where I connect via DVI or could connect via HDMI is the MacBook Pro supported this. Again I don’t want yet another dongle/adaptor from DVI with separate stereo/audio mini jack to HDMI.)

2 USB-2 ports minimum - prefer 3. Note at least on per side with enough free space to plug in multiple USB cables.

DVD/BD – I personally would pay for a BD slot drive. I would not carry an external drive - ever. (Yes I have enough to drag through TSA air port security today.)

i-Sight – I use this more often than you would think both for video conferencing and to take a quick pic of something.

That's it. Honestly tired of waiting and all the rumors/hype.

YMMV!

Is there any other aspect ratios that Apple might consider transitioning or is it only 16:9?
I only see 16:9 if they are transitioning.

What would you say is the most "useful" aspect ratio for a laptop/display monitor?
I can't really say, since I've only used 4:3 (and 5:4).

Hey iMacmatician, any thoughts on the possible incorporation of anodized aluminum colors,
When the original MacBook rumors circulated in early 2006, there was one that mentioned color MacBooks. I got all excited for pink, light green, and light blue MacBooks (my wishlist) but they ended up as only white and black.:p So although I'd like colors, I don't think they're likely, given the lack of rumors about color. I'd like to see the colors match the iPod nanos' colors, and maybe sold in a MacBook + iPod nano identical color combo set. If we see colors, we might see white and black keyboards (like the iPod nano click wheel) and maybe only certain parts of the MacBook will be color.

or for that matter, black and silver?
I see a wholly silver MacBook Pro and a silver and black MacBook.

Additionally, any thoughts on possible differentiating factors for MBPs vs. MBs if the MB moves to aluminum?
I'll limit the factors to the high-end (≈$1499) MacBook and the low-end (≈$1999) MacBook Pro.
  • Size and weight: The MacBook would be smaller, lighter, and maybe thinner than the MacBook Pro
  • CPU: Currently they are the same (2.4 GHz). This could continue (2.4 GHz) or Apple could choose to up the clock speed on the MacBook Pro only (2.4 GHz vs. 2.53 GHz)
  • Hard drive: Maybe the MacBook Pro will get a 7200 RPM drive standard. I don't think so though.
  • GPU: This is a big one. Integrated GPU (although a better one) vs. midrange GPU (low-end AT WORST), there's no comparison for the GPU user.
  • Display: While the MacBook is likely to have a 14" 1366·768 (maybe 1280·720) display, the MacBook Pro would likely have a 16" 1600·900 display
  • Ports: The MacBook Pro is likely to have more ports and slots than the MacBook
  • Others largely for the sake of differentiation: 0 or more of: Multi-touch trackpad, glass trackpad, iSight HD, backlit keyboard, user-replaceable (battery/HD/RAM/etc.), and most likely some BTO options too
Fastest Quad-Core Intel CPU Possible (if HP and Dell can offer an Intel Core 2 Duo Extreme Edition 2.53 GHz Quad-Core with 1066 Mhz, then Apple should or they are simply technically behind today).
The MacBook Pro is too thin to dissipate the heat of a 2.53 GHz quad-core (45 W vs. 35 W of current dual-cores)

8-16 GB dual-channel 1066MHz DDR3
16 GB would be 4 RAM slots, which may not be possible due to the relatively small space caused by the MacBook Pro being thin.

The upcoming MacBook Pro is rumored to be redesigned; this will likely make it even thinner and have less internal space.

I wonder how low the MBA price will go. If the MB is going to be cheaper and lighter wouldn't it kill the MBA sales?

I wonder how low the MBA price will go.
I think $1499~$1599 for 1.6 GHz and 80 GB.

If the MB is going to be cheaper and lighter wouldn't it kill the MBA sales?
It depends on how much lighter. 4.5 lbs. and .9" is nowhere near the MacBook Air's thickness, although it would cut a few Air sales. An Air price drop would counter that.

Maybe with the MacBook likely going to 14.1" 16:9, the MacBook Air may go to 13.1" 16:9 (1600·900 anyone? :D).

Yes, it has been confirmed that nobody really knows anything for sure except Apple :)
That's right. Some rumors can be said to be quite reliable, but even then it's not certain. :D

Is there any other aspect ratios that Apple might consider transitioning or is it only 16:9?

What would you say is the most "useful" aspect ratio for a laptop/display monitor?

16:9 is absolutely horrible for everyday use. Who the hell is using their 13" Macbook primarily to watch DVDs?

I prefer good old 4:3 or even 5:4 for everyday use. 16:10 already took the ideal 1600x1200 and chopped off 150 extremely useful lines.

na, na, na, na na.... na, na, na, na..... say, hey, hey... goodbye.

4x3 is over, 16x10 is going away, 16x9 is a natural progression with the standardization of HDTV. I think the thing that people are being short sighted on is the fact that our use of the screen real estate is going to evolve to use the horizontal space more and more.

Toolbars on the side, web sites that you dread scrolling on will make better use of the wider screens, it will be an evolution as many still have the older aspect ratios, but it will change over time. You wont even think about it someday.

A lot of talk and debate about screen sizes going to 16:9

Personally, I don't envision the internet remaining limited to vertical (and rarely used horrizontal) scrolling.

I imagine websites will eventually look more like landscapes than pieces of paper. I've seen a few 3d designs already. The next 5 years are going to look cool and I welcome wider screens to accommodate that. (aside from the fact that my apps are along my sides.)

See Adobe Max

This post made me laugh... then it hit me--

a 30" portable Touch/Tablet for graphic artists sounds sick. I would buy that just to relearn how to draw and make cartoons.

Actually, my career would take a huge turn.

Crap! I need one now. :) I can't believe how easy and fun that would make my job.

Sorry for the ghetto quote i couldnt find your OP.

Anyways, I just wanted to let you know where i work. My store had 3-5 MBPs on order. This means that they are ordered from our store notifying the warehouse. Our warehouse has 0. Theres 0 inbound... 0 in transit. 0..... none... There isnt any coming either.

The only reason I know this is because I had to return 2 MBP's because there were defects in each and we had no new ones to replace my purchase with.

To sum it up... Theres definately something going on, ill check into the system and see if i can scan for new sku's. ( Psst. We found iPhone 3G skus about 2 weeks before they were even annouced in the company internally.)

Cheers.
