Netbooks represent a challenging new laptop category.

And it's generally accepted Apple must reduce prices, or offer new lower-priced products, to compete in the nation's/world's changed economic state.

Wouldn't an 8 or 9-inch-screen iPhone/iPod Touch, with a virtual keyboard AND a keyboard port, meet that new competitive challenge perfectly?

Yeah, apple would need to add adequate internal storage, and cut-and-paste, but isn't the iPhone/iPod Touch already MOST of what a "netbook" or low-priced computer needs to be, except for screen size?

I'm just sayin'...

and this is where i swoop in to save the day!

I was bored so I made up what I would like to see when the MB Touch comes out.
I guess it's OK for an amatuer using MS Paint for an hr...

What do you think is missing? I was researching the "Brick" codename and people say it has to do with the The MB Touch because brick was a misinterpreted Chinese word that was related to touchscreen.

Will apple release a netbook as an alternative to the macbook? A mini MB air would rock!

*******Not my screen shot! Found off google! Still waiting for new MB**********

About the bricks: not about laptops

My predictions for new macs: 4 bricks

1. Baby-brick = Apple TV. I say it will be upgraded a little to allow safari on your big screen, but also to allow iPhone/touch to act as it's keyboard and as remotes and GAME CONTROLLERS for video games sold through the app store. Now, every household will need 4 iPhones/touches to play 4 player games through ATV on the big screen!

2. Little brick = macmini. It'll be upgraded big-time. It should become iMac without the screen, PLUS it should include a TV tuner. This will make it the full multimedia machine for the living room. It needs to be able to run games and interface with iPhone same as ATV. (including GAMES)

3. Mama-brick = a new category for apple. This is a box that allows custom graphics boards and other upgrades but is not as expensive or as large as the mac pro. (the midi)

4. Papa-brick = mac pro.

I could be wrong. "BUY BUY"

combo drive and...

why is everyone freaking out about apple not releasing new macbooks this month?

Makes sense to wait until the current financial crisis and elections are over in early november if they are doing a big notebook revamp.

And why say that no-one will buy the current macbooks? Didn't apple just have their best month ever for macbook sales?

The best thing they could do immediately in my opinion is to do a small bump in ram/harddrive, and lower the cost on each model by $200.

it seems to me that only a very small amount of the general public actually obsess over the comparitive specs to PC notebooks. Look at the iphone & ipods, underspec compared to similar devices - but its about the user experience, software and marketing - and the cool factor of course.

Having said that - apple really needs to kill the combo drive for good in the entry level macs.

Yes, kill the combo drive and HD on 24" imacs and all or at minimum middle/top macpro's.

If Apple is going to continue to sell the idea that their poop doesn't stink and if you want the best of the best, then give the people what they demand. Not just the fanboys, but folks who know that buying an apple product, the apple name, they are getting top notch, above board, better than the rest products.

What a dream. You're postin' on the wrong thread anyways. This is the: It (the brick) is about the MacBooks thread.

the brick?

One of the guys that I work with was telling me that his brother is friends with some former apple employees son. He says that they have a closet of apple stuff that they give away and he got an ipod and was going to get an iphone for him. He also says that they get all the new apple products before release. Anyway, he was talking about getting laptops in the next week or two - he also said something about touchscreens. I'm not sure if it's macbook or macbook pro and this came to me thirdhand - so take it for what it's worth.

Maybe the brick is the shape of the touchscreen trackpad.

Sorry, but if the macbooks were already set to come out on Oct. 14th that is not going to change now. Rumors have stated that the new macbooks have already been shipped into the US. If this is the case, Apple would not have an ample supply of the current macbooks to ship through the holiday season. If apple really is switching to an aluminum casing, the black and white macbooks are already out of production and only what is left in inventory will be sold via Apple until the new release date and then through third party retailers.

Apple is not going to just hault production of a new product or sit on it for three months hoping the economy improves, when APPLE has done well, recording record sales and currently having the highest market share in its notebook history. Further, the largest growing demographic for apple notebooks is the COLLEGE crowd. The economic crisis has not put an end to student loans and 2k limit credit cards and students will continue to get whatever apple throws at them.

In that case - wouldn't we have seen retailers running out of stock on macbooks? I haven't seen any reports on this anywhere.

Besides, there has been no official statement about October 14th.

And to your final point, yes student loans have infact been reduced substantially - watch the news.

I just hope the new Mac Book Pros are real professional laptops without all the gimmicky consumer crap. Leave those for the MacBooks.

I hope you're right. If not, I'll pick up a Dell Precision M6400 in a couple of weeks and get a good deal with my employee discount.

cool.

I think we will have a sweeping update, related to a change to 16x9 screens. If you check the buyers guide almost all of the products are due. It will be the 'Apple goes blu' event. Apple totally embraces High Def with 16x9, blu-ray and HDMI on all products. Maybe the mythical merge of Apple TV and Mac Mini into the hub for the living room?

But what does that leave for Macworld? Software, and maybe a netbook or tablet (or both) based on the atom processor and scaled down OSX that is in the iphone?

Okay, so wait... This is your co-worker's brother's friend's dad. And Apple is your co-worker's brother's friend's dad's ex-employer?

I beg to differ. I believe this will be the 'Apple goes Green' event. This would put Apple in a better position to sell computers at a time when long battery life (to combat energy costs) and environmentally safe products are a must have. Also, it would make sense because Mr. Jobs released a statement not too long ago that declared Apple's plans to make Apple products "greener" by the end of 2008.

I highly believe that Mac Pros (Core i7) and Cinema Displays will be due at Macworld. If Apple releases greener notebooks before the holiday season fulfilling this promise from Steve Jobs, sales would be excellent for Apple. Flooding the market with "a sweeping update" would leave nothing reasonable for Macworld and would take the spotlight away from the big sellers: notebooks. However I do not disagree with you on 16:9 screens. They would be welcomed.

well said!

Brick idea

I think the brick will be a remote accessory to the MB (may or may not dock) that will contain the following features:

  • Accelorometer
  • Gyroscope
  • Pointer feature
  • Small number of external buttons (possibly touch buttons)

Sound familiar? Thats right, i propose the "Brick" will essentially be a Wii-type remote for your MB/MBP.

Just an idea, but it would be cool. Sure beats a plain ole' mouse or using the trackpad all the time.....

hmm, it seems that nvidia logo is for macbook pros. it doesn't make sense to
have nvidia chipset for plastic macbooks.

<staying hopeful>

There are no pros on that page...

Maybe the aluminum rumor was wrong?

Maybe the aluminum is anodized?

Hm....

I hate to say anything... But maybe everyone is making too big a deal out of this "brick" thing. I personally would love some sort of WIFI docking station. Like you connect your shiny new aluminum MacBook to it over WiFi and it is connected to your monitor, printer, mouse, keyboard whatever... You could leave your laptop under your desk or in your bag, even in another room and use it at your desk... I can also see this being directed at the air, and its lack of ports... A direction I thing apple is heading in. Minimal ports, 1 USB, HDMI, Power, audio and maybe firewire then if you want more then you have to use the dock...

Probably wont happen - would be good though.

Also - with all the rumors of DVI being pulled out of MBP - What if this is to be replaced by the much smaller HDMI port? Then apple would just offer adaptors (at an extra cost of course) to DVI and VGA...

I am expecting redesigned laptops and perhaps a smaller option (not touch, powerful netbook). No Combo drives (also helps apple with standardising parts), bigger specs etc, lighter, thinner laptops... I desperately need to replace my 12 inch Powerbook G4...
