Is this possible? Can I hook up a ACD and Macbook? I hope so.

I'm coming from a MBA and 2n7inch thunderbolt display. I keeping reading that the Macbook to ACD will work. But I have yet to actually see one in action.
I've just obtained a 27 ACD/ non thunderbolt.
My goal is to use the Apple/Macbook USB-c adapter, so I can charge my Macbook and use my Apple Display. I have a Hydradock on order... But its not here yet.
If anyone has any ideas, I'm open. :)

This is my first combo:

1. Kanex XD. This device has an hdmi in and displayport out.
I've tried a few different methods of connecting everything together. Verdict: It doesn't seem to work for me. The Macbook can see a display is connected. But its not recognizing the ACD display.

I'm heading to MicroCenter today to see what other adapters I can find.

As the rMB can detect the display, have you thought of using an App like QuickRes or SwitchRes X? you would then have full control over the output to the display and manually set the resolution, SwitchRex X may be the better as it has greater functionality. I use QuickRes mainly for the same reason, however not with the ACD

I just tried it. That doesn't seem to do anything. I wonder if I need to find some way of making magsafe think its powering something..

Are you using a Thunderbolt Display or the older Apple Cinema Display? The Thunderbolt Display won't work at all, but you are probably aware of that.

It would be nice if there was a USB-C - Displayport adapter out there as that would be the simplest option since USB-C alternate mode on the Macbook supports Displayport. As an FYI most of the HDMI-to-displayport adapters are going to support 1920x1200 at the most.

Edit: Found one!

You will need to get a Displayport Female --> Mini-Displayport Male adapter to put on the end, but that looks like it should work. That still doesn't take care of your charging situation though. Hmm...

Eh, looks like the Kanex supports 1280x720 out to the ACD which makes it even less useful:

I didn't notice that! Thanks for pointing that out. I boxed it up and it's going back..

I ordered a usbC to mini displayport cable from the Google store and a Mini DisplayPort coupling... My charging problem still exists.

If I could find a hdmi to Mini DisplayPort female or vga to Mini DisplayPort female.. That would solve all my problems.

You're welcome!

Where did you find the mini displayport adapter? I only had luck finding a regular displayport adapter from there. Or was this what you were referring to?

https://store.google.com/product/usb_type_c_to_displayport_cable

The dearth of USB-C accessories six months after this laptop came out is discouraging to say the least. It would be nice to find a USB-C splitter that leaves one port just for power like the Apple HDMI adapter does, and then you could use the other port for the display end of things. And hopefully they would put a third port on there if you want to connect something else ;).

Sorry, I meant the display port to usb-c you mentioned above.

I have 2 more ideas... coming in the mail. I'll post back here shortly about the outcomes.

I would love a simple usb-c hub with 2 extra usb-c and 1 usb3.0 That would be perfect.

Yep its a ACD. At this point, I don't really care about charging....... ( I'm still holding out hope for the Hydradock to materialize)....I got my Google USB-C to Displayport Cable today. Quality is nice... I'll see how it performs tomorrow when everything else arrives from China. :) So excited. I like projects like this

This would be ideal but haven't seen it on ebay/Amazon yet.
I just ordered this cable. I think It will work wonderfully with my set up.

I just finished my second test.

Its working!!!! I'm excited. Just what I was looking for. I think if I get the other cable I can charge it too.

And a mono price mini display port female coupler.

I'm super happy.

I have the Google usb-c to Display port, hooked to a Mini display port to Displayport Female adapter, to a mono price female coupler.

The adapter I ordered from AliExpress has still not been delivered. I ordered on the 31st of October and this was the message I received today... " hello, the courier company said the products has been detained by customs, because the product is complained by tort,so it can not be shipped now, thank you"

I'm going to try and get more info..

So is the only way to get this working while charging is with a hydradock. Anyone have one and verify with us it works well?

So, they really gave NO specifications on that page which is disappointing, but in theory that dock should work. It would depend on whether or not it supports Displayport 1.2 and what revision of USB 3.1 it requires (Gen1 or Gen2). Nice find.

I have my 2016, which I am loving and have this set up.

So happy I get my display. I switched someone at work for a Cinema for my Thunderbolt. I have the hydra dock on order so I can eventually charge at the same time, but with the long battery life, it's really not a big deal.

I have noticed that my screen will turn dark gray with some tearing every now and again. I have to unplug and replug the cable. Not sure what's causing that.

Which adapter are you using for display port?

I am using the google display port, mono price mini adapter and a coupler from a store in my city.

Get my monoprice coupler tomorrow. Maybe that will help.

I switched from the local coupler to the mono price one that I ordered and all is working well.

Really like they hypershop one, might buy it if it will ship soon.
