Seems like this docking station may work too:

None of the Amazon customer reviews mention using the mini DisplayPort output but customer feedback is otherwise quite good.

Fortunately/unfortunately the laptop I use happens to have 2 USB-C ports and it's not worth $150+ to me to get a single-cable solution so I won't try this docking station myself. For now I'll just use the Google USB-C to DisplayPort cable I already have along with $16 worth of a CableMatters female DisplayPort to male mini DisplayPort cable and a Monoprice DisplayPort female-to-female coupler.

Smileyboy, thanks for confirming that this works (I think :) and thanks for starting this thread in the first place.

It seems that technical issues have made many of the past USB-C to mini DisplayPort solutions vaporware, but hopefully things are settling down and we can finally find something that works (more than 15 months after the introduction of the first USB-C powered laptops).

Did it work with the Apple Thunderbolt display?
- Nothing works with the Apple Thunderbolt Display. It is technically impossible to connect it to a current 12" MacBook due to it requiring a Thunderbolt connection, which the MacBook doesn't have. And it is impossible to convert other signals into Thunderbolt.

Thanks for the clarification.

Any chance this would work with the old 30" Cinema display? I'm always trying to move down my 15" beast to the 12" Macbook, but I don't want to waste this awesome display...

Did you find anything that works with your 30" cinema? I just bought the Dell USB-C dock to try with my 30" Cinema Display by way of a Dual-Link DVI to mDP. I'm hoping it will work.

The Dell dock only worked for power. I tried three four different model monitors over VGA and mDP and nothing worked.

The Apple adaptor works fine on the 15" rMBP. I don't have the 12" MB so I'm not sure!

I decided to buy the StarTech HDMI to DisplayPort adaptor to use with the apple av multi port adaptor.

I do see where the screen gets a little jumpy, but I like having a charged MacBook. I have the hydra dock on order and I was hopeful they were going to be selling it soon, but now it looks like they have been delayed again.

Not what I was looking for. I'd like an updated version of the thunderbolt / Cinema. There's no integrated speakers / cam, right? I'm sure it's a nice monitor but not for me. Does the 2015 rMB even work with it?

Doesn't seem like Apple wants to be in the business of making standalone displays any longer. But that shouldn't be a surprise to us.

Regarding using the rMB with the new 4K display, we can discuss here: https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...he-new-lg-ultrafine-4k-display-usb-c.2009909/
